The power of descriptive writing and scene setting is often underrated when it comes to the art of storytelling and yet the best novels demonstrate just how important this is. The author of Raising The Black has a remarkable gift for scene setting which places the reader firmly in the action. Her remarkable and often beautiful descriptions almost make one hear the sound of the sea and clash of battle, there are moments when we almost feel the lover's caress and still more when we share the passions of the heroes and heroines.
If I must pick out an issue, it is that this remarkable power of description is not applied to the battle scenes quite as much as it is to other aspects of the story, but how can one truly complain? For at heart, this is a love story. And as a love story, it truly does take flight.
