Tale of a truly unique child
This story of an alienated boy (bullied by both fellow students and teachers) moves in ways you won't anticipate--from the first moments, we realize that only his unusual friendship with his horse will sustain him. Most YA novels ignore the natural world; most YA novels I"ve read treat their children as heroes or victims. But Jamie in Horse Sense is clearly different. The writing, particularly the descriptions of the physical world and the lively physicality of the animals, are the mark of an author with a keen eye for the world around him. A bit melancholy but ultimately triumphant--I loved it!
