I'm a fan of Mr Conyer's novels and short stories with Harrison Peel, because they take what I think is a more 'realistic' take on the Cthulhu Mythos. I know that 'realistic' is an odd word to use when you're describing stories involving alien demi-gods, multi-dimensional rifts and Shoggoths; but the Peel stories always stay grounded and gritty. People die, often innocent, and Peel doesn't always win - but then that's life fighting against cultists trying to wipe out human life. "The Road to Afghanistan" is another great Peel story - fast paced, well-written and with an interesting ending. I devoured it in about half an hour!
