Lowell, Massachusetts is a dreary town that has this shadow of the past hanging over it that is quite palatable. This story captures that shadow expertly, directly tapping into the city's textile pedigree, and the horrors that befell those who were trapped in its economic clutches. It is rather amazing that period's complexities and cold mix of boarding housing and child labor can be captured in so few words. An excellent read with a very realistic historical twist that I am used to reading about in the museums of the area.Read the story now
The story has a natural progression that reveals more detail in an organic way. The main character sees what transpires through his own eyes, and begins to gain affinity for the wonders he faces. The introduction of the supernatural is initially brief and subtle, but grows over time. It has a good payoff in the end, but the challenge I saw was that while the mysterious man seems to put forward an idea of balance in the elements initially, but over time the elements seem to grow in their danger. Not so much a critique as an observation that adds to the mystery, as the motive of the shadowy man is hinted at but not directly outlined.Read the story now
