I think the plot gives a real insight into how families can be, not physically abusive, but mentally so. The amount of anxiety Alma endures due to the double standards demonstrated by her mother and brother are sometimes hard to read without getting angry on her behalf; and the character certainly demonstrates a patience that I couldn't show, but which seems to stem from a life of trying to make her family happy when they don't show the same courtesy. I'm interested to see where the plot goes, and how the influence of Alma's marriage to Scott and the new family she marries into changes Alma's nature. Which I hope will lead to more of her standing up for herself, and more of her family listening to and respecting her - though I'm not sure how likely the latter part is.

There needs to be some editing but I know that it's more important to just get it all out, and worry about polishing the manuscript off later. I hope you manage to finish this - thank you for posting and sharing this story, keep up the good work!
