Grammar Nazis & their nasty troll minions
Yes, a scary thought. But they're out there. Ready to destroy your story & gut your hope with a few comments on your grammar. Don't' be fooled. These shadow dwellers are malicious creatures. There are two separate but linked parts of any novel; the art of writing & the craft of storytelling. The troll & its grammar Nazi Commandant does not care about the story. Storytelling is irrelevant to them. They're mission is to ... See More fill you with doubt by launching attacks on your grammar. Sometimes they work in packs. Other times alone. They are without soul. They've failed with their endeavours & they want to undermine your morale so you will give up. See these grammar goblins for what they are-vampires that feed on your hope rather than your blood. YOUR story is separate from your writing but if the writing is bad enough it can undermine your credibility as a storyteller. What can you do to protect yourself against these underworld darklings of despair? There is hope. Check out the site prowritingaid.com. You can copy and paste a page or two of your work at a time & it highlights grammar, overused words, and areas that need more action. You can do this for free. You can also pay for more. It is slow work but beneficial. We are not professional editors. We are storytellers. Your unpublished story is what is called an uncorrected proof. It's nothing to be ashamed of. Your story is still intact. But it's best to bring your writing up to a minimum standard so the editor won't be pulling his hair out when your story is chosen. I've seen typos in paperbacks from internationally best selling authors. Books that have gone through the editing process. Stories that took 8 years to write. So don't be discouraged. Clean up your story as much as you can but focus on improving your writing while placing most of your energy on the craft of storytelling. Because in the end the reader places their money on the counter for the STORY. YOUR STORY. As Neil Gaiman says: "You're the only one that can write the story.." And he should know.
