Writing to Savor

The plot of this story was much more surprising than the little blurb about it suggested. I loved every minute of it. It was suspenseful, dark, and at times, deeply philosophical. The author has a gift for describing situations so you feel completely immersed in them, even when it's something you could never have imagined before.

There were times when my breath caught, and I had to stop and savor a passage because it touched me so much. Other times I was reading as fast as I could, dying to know what was going to happen next. This story is brilliantly creative, beautifully written and, if you allow it, will make you question the very nature of life. Plus, it creeped me the hell out. I can't ask for anything more than that in a great work of horror fiction.

Mind-Blowing

The events in this story blew my mind. I love writing that surprises me, and this kept me holding on for dear life, with no idea what might happen next. The creatures and situations that are brought to life here are unlike anything else I've seen or read. They are unique to the worlds that Alex Beyman creates. So when you enter these stories, it's like discovering a whole new realm that's both terrifying and, despite all the monstrosities found there, still deeply human. While my mind was reeling at the way things unfolded, I also felt a sense of purpose in each event, an underlying symbolism that affected me all the way to the core. There's nothing gratuitous in this horror story, existing only to disturb or terrify, although there are lots of terrifying moments. Each situation is part of a beautiful message, one that you come to understand, right alongside the main character. You take this journey with him, and in the end, you find that you've changed too. Writing with this kind of power is rare.

Brilliant and original

This isn't standard ghost and monster stuff -- it goes much deeper than that. I think that's what I like about all of Alex's work, that there's a depth to it, a feeling that the horror you're experiencing has been hiding in the dark corners of your mind all along. One of Alex's gifts is to dig into that darkness and uncover things you never imagined could live there. And yet, despite their utter alien-ness, they also feel familiar. Like you've brushed past those dark places before but made yourself forget.

So much of horror relies on traditional explanations for things that scare us -- brain eating humans with infectious viruses, spirits making blood run down the walls. But unlike those, this was new and fascinating and thought provoking. The setup for the horror reveal was so original, I was almost giddy when I read it. It's rare to find an author who can do this, especially with characters and dialogue that feel like they jumped out of real life. I'd recommend this to anyone who likes to be creeped out but can't find many stories in the horror genre that actually deliver that.
