The Call
The night was a beautiful one. The stars blazed across the galaxy like nothing Kenji had ever witnessed before. Tiny stars of every hue the world has to offer lit up the sky. Purples, reds and blues sparkled on the tiny dots that remained stuck to the sky. Kenji lay under the brush of his families familiar shack in the middle of the forest. Crickets sung from their hiding places and owls hooted in their nests. How could any night be better? Kenji thought. The stars are shining, the animals are at peace. Life is good. This night in particular was beautiful. Kenji's father, Kanji, was a star collector. He spent nights and nights in the dark studying and calculating the movements of each star, and collecting any fragments that were kind enough to travel onto the Earth. He would then use those fragments to power up their technology and coolest of all, dad's staff.
"Would you like to see my staff, Kenji?" Kanji asked. His father reached for the secret compartment behind the stairs. He made 3 different hand movements, which unlocked the seal, lightly pushed the wooden covering in until he heard a soft 'click', and opened the door. Inside the compact room was a wooden staff. The staff was curved in a most peculiar fashion. It had a slender build, was a light brown, and seemed to reach to about 55 inches long. The staff was completely made except for the tippy top, which held what looked like a small, broken crystal. The crystal was gray and seemed misty inside. It was beautiful regardless, Thought Kenji. "Dad, can I hold it?" Kanji smiled, but put the staff back where it was. "I'm afraid that'll be for another time. When the time comes that you are ready, the staff will be all yours." Even though Kenji wanted to pout a little, he decided to keep a positive attitude. The staff wasn't ready anyways, so Kenji decided that it was ok. After all, he had seen the universe in the warm comfort of his house. How could he be unhappy? When the time came that Kenji would wield his dad's staff he would be ready.
"Kenji."
An unfamiliar voice called his name.
"Kenji!"
The voice was louder
"KENJI!"
Kenji's eyes opened. The faint whispering of the mysterious voice still echoed in his mind. He lie on his back under the lush trees that protected his home. Had that all been a dream? Kenji thought. It seemed as if someone was calling him, as if someone or something needed help. The thought of the staff loomed in his head. He could still remember the day his dad had showed him his staff for the first time. Why was it suddenly showing up in his dreams? Kenji decided to go inside. Something strange was happening and somehow Kenji knew things were going to change.
