CHAPTER 18: A HAUNTING PAST
I stood in the shower, my hands and forehead pressed against the wall, and let the water run over my body. I was exhausted. I hadn’t slept very much on the way to the motel—if any really—and I was a little dizzy and nauseated. I was half tempted to call Sebastian into the bathroom because every time I tried to move or open my eyes, everything was spinning and it made the nausea so much worse, but I hadn’t called him in because I didn’t want him to worry. I was already doing that enough for the both of us.
Besides, he had Camille to deal with.
When we had gotten here, she was waiting in the room. She went straight for Sebastian, not paying attention to the rest of us and I felt angry, sad and slightly jealous about how he looked and smiled at her like she was everything. I had held back tears of “betrayal” as I looked down and moved toward the bathroom door. I shivered as I pulled my jacket off and tossed it on to one of the beds as I passed it.
“I think your girlfriend is pissed son.” Stated Lance as I opened the door and went into the bathroom. I was about to close it, but Deric managed to push his way in and closed the door behind him.
I stepped back, startled, and looked up at him, then looked down at his chest so I could avoid his eyes, as I heard Sebastian start to protest.
“It’s alright.” I heard Camille tell him as Deric moved close to me. I stepped back into the door, my back suddenly to it—stupid vampire speed—as he pressed his hands to it, not really caging me in because I knew if I really wanted to, he would let me go, and put his forehead to mine. “He won’t try anything. He just wants to make sure she is okay.” I felt a little angry as I heard Sebastian sigh and give in so quickly. Of course he would. She was his mate and she had already taken him from me.
“I’m sorry Sammie-”
“It’s fine.” I shrugged and looked at the floor.
“No it’s not.” He took my face in his hands but I turned away. “See, you won’t even look at me. I’m sort. For what she said and what I did and now she’s here and I know you don’t like it-”
“It’s... not that.” I sighed. “I don’t care what she said or what she thinks about me unless it affects us. I don’t even care that she is here... what you did... yeah, I’m still upset about it, but I understand your reasoning behind it. Does it make it right, no, but I understand and it doesn’t change the fact that I love you...” slowly, I looked up at him and he touched my cheek.
“Then what is it Sammie?” he asked softly. “Why are you suddenly so depressed? I mean worse than the normal kind you’ve been at the last couple of days?” I didn’t say anything. “It’s got to be something to do with Cam, so what is it?” tears filled my eyes and I turned away. “Oh Baby.” He sighed and pulled me away from the door into his strong arms. “Please tell me what’s going on.” He whispered. “You’re worrying me.”
“I’m losing them.” I sobbed as I buried my face in his chest.
“What do you mean? Who? Why?” he questioned.
“Andy and Sebastian.” He tensed and I pulled away. I turned around and faced the door as I wrapped my arms around myself and shivered violently. “I’m losing Andy because I choose to love you and I’m already losing Sebastian to her. I guess I know how Andy feels now...” I sniffed and then wiped my nose on me sleeve. “I’m sorry. I just need a shower.” I turned to Deric again and he had me pressed against the door once more, this time, his hands on my face as he held it gently. His face was inches from mine and my breath caught as I looked into his beautiful eyes.
“Don’t you ever apologize for that.” He whispered. “Don’t you ever be scared you will lose them either. Andy loves you and will never leave or betray you. Sebastian is your brother. Whether by blood or not, I know that he takes you very serious. Cam is his mate, so yes, he is going to give her attention, but you’re his sister. His sister. Nothing will ever change that or make him leave you.” I said nothing as he wiped a tear away from my cheek as it slid down it. “And just to reassure you Baby, you’re stuck with me.” I just looked at him. I wanted to be “stuck” with him forever—and I didn’t care how needy it seemed—but for some reason...
I knew he’d leave me.
“Y-you’re right.” I sighed and looked down. Might as well tell him what he wanted to hear because I really didn’t want to argue right now. I didn’t have the energy to even try and stand up on my own. I was already feeling nauseous right now and if Deric was there right now, I was positive I would have fallen over by now. “I shouldn’t worry about it. It’s must be the stress getting to me.” I looked up at him and smiled—though I only felt it halfheartedly, if that. I stood on my tippy toes and slid my hand behind his neck to bring his lips down to mine.
I could tell that he was unsure at first as he kissed me back, but I knew, as he pressed me harder against the door and lifted me up so I could wrap my legs around him, he cared so much, even loved me, he just wasn’t ready to say it. It wouldn’t change that I did.
I pulled back some.
“I love you Deric.” I whispered. He sighed and was the one to look away now, but I grabbed his face and forced him to look at me. “Don’t worry Baby. The time will come when you are ready and when you are, you will tell me and I will probably cry with happiness.” He half smiled. “But until then, I love you Deric. No matter what happens, I love you. You are my freaky, vampire boyfriend...” he laughed a little and that made me feel better. His laugh always made me feel better, if only for a minute. “...and I love you.” I hugged him to me and kissed his cheek...
“Sam?” someone knocked on the door and I slowly lifted my head away from the shower wall, but quickly place it back with a moan. “Sam? Are you okay in there?” it was Drew. “You’ve been in there for a while.”
“Can... can you get Sebastian for me?” I breathed out.
“He’s not here Sam... what’s going on? Why do you sound so breathless and weak? Are you okay?”
“Drew.” I gasped as my legs gave out.
“Sam!” he caught me before I hit the floor. “Call them back! Now!” he ordered as he turned off the water and then pulled off his already soaking shirt to put it on me. I was shivering violently. I lay limp in his arms as he lifted me up and carried me quickly back into the bedroom and lay me on the bed. “Sam?” he shook me. My head was starting to pound and I whimpered.
“Deric! Get back here now! She’s collapsed.” I lost consciousness a moment later...
“What?” Deric questioned as he breathed shakily.
“She’s collapsed.” His father said again and he looked at Sebastian and Cam as they looked at him worriedly. “She was in the shower, has been for a long time, and Drew knocked on the door to ask if she was okay. She asked for Sebastian and then just collapsed-” there was suddenly a high pitched scream from the other end of the phone and Deric actually had to pull it away from his ear.
“Sam.” Deric breathed and stood up. “I’m on my way.” He said and hung up the phone.
“What’s going on?” Sebastian started as he stood up with Cam right beside him.
“I don’t know.” That was all he said as he started running for the motel.
“No.” I whimpered as Lance started to pull me away from the wall. “No, let me go! I need to finish! Let me go!”
“L-let her finish.” Drew whispered and Lance grumbled something I didn’t catch as he just let me go and I continued to draw on the wall. Someone else ran into the room suddenly, but I didn’t pay them any attention. I just kept drawing on the wall until it was done...
And then I collapsed on the floor and lost consciousness again.
I shivered a little against Deric as he leaned against the window, with his arms around me, in the booth at McDonalds. He ran his hand over my arm and clasped our hands together. He brought my hand to his lips and kissed it softly before he made me sit up when Sebastian brought back our food. He set my burger and fries and drink in front of me before he sat down and started chowing down. I looked at him and then my food quietly.
I shivered again and scowled at the thought of food right now. I was starving, but I also felt sick still. My head still had a dull throb to it and I just really wanted to go to sleep.
They had told me, after I had collapsed, that I had started drawing on the wall. I faintly remembered being terrified of what it was, thought I wasn’t even sure what it was. They had managed to make sure... whatever I had drawn on the wall, was gone before I woke up. I didn’t remember anything they had told me about it, just that what I had woken up, I was terrified of something entirely different...
Well, not really.
What they had told me was that I had drawn a symbol, a crest, on the wall and all I remembered was that I had seen a family. A family that had cut down many people. I remembered that when I woke up, I had screamed myself awake and Deric and Sebastian had tried to help me settle down, but all I did was beg for Drew. They told me that he was out doing something, but they called him back.
“Sam!” Drew grabbed my face and made me look at him. “Sam, what is it? What is wrong?” tears streamed down my face as he looked me in the eyes. “Come on Cup Cake, what is it?” I threw my arms around him and sobbed into his chest. He wrapped his arms around me and drew me close. “S-Sam... what is it? What did you see?” he pushed me back to look into my eyes. “Sam, please tell me what it was?” I looked at him as I sobbed. “Please.” He stroked my hair out of my face.
“I-I saw... a-a man.” I gasped out. “H-he h-had you ch-chained to a wall...” his face changed a little. “Y-you kept begging... begging for him to leave h-her alone... b-but...” his face changed from worried to horror. “Y-you begged...” he pulled me against his chest and I could feel him trembling as he held me tightly.
“I will never let that happen to you.” He breathed. I will never... never let that happen to you.” His nails dug into my skin, but as he held me, I couldn’t seem to care at all. I cried into his chest and he just held me and tried to sooth me...
“Sam.” I looked up suddenly at Drew when he touched my cheek. I breathed shakily and he sighed. He looked sad and a little haunted as he looked me over. “Eat your food Sam.” He stroked some hair behind my ear and wiped away a tear that slid down my cheek. “Don’t worry about it okay. I’m here and Deric is here. Sebastian and Cam too. Even Lance won’t let anything happen to you. Okay?” I let out a shaky breath and slowly nodded. He smiled softly and let his hand fall away.
Cam’s phone started to ring and she excused herself to go answer it. I looked down at my food and then slowly picked up my burger. I took a bite and that was when I realized just how hungry I really was. I chowed down and managed to finish my food quickly. Normally, I couldn’t make it past half of a sandwich and some of the fries, but I had managed to eat my whole burger, all the fries and drink the drink.
And I was still hungry.
But I wasn’t going to tell anyone that.
“Are you still hungry?” I looked at Deric and then slowly nodded. Okay so I would tell him, since he asked. He chuckled quietly. “You’re one of those ones.” He said and I scowled. I didn’t know what he meant. “Are you craving anything?” he went on.
I thought a moment before I answered.
“Ice cream Sunday?” I mumbled. He nodded and made me get up. He kissed me and told me that he would be back in a minute. I watched him as he walked over to the counter and saw the girl up there smile at him. I scowled as he smiled back. Drew laughed and I looked at him. He pointed toward them, motioning for me to go up there...
And I did just that.
I walked up to him and took his hand, lacing our fingers together. He looked at me a moment and then glanced at the girl at the counter before he laughed and kissed me softly.
“Jealous.” He murmured.
“I have every right to be.” I admitted and I wasn’t ashamed. He was mine and I wanted everyone to know it. He laughed again and kissed me, letting his lips rest against mine a little longer this time. When he pulled away, he pulled his wallet out of his pocket and paid for the food that he had ordered. I didn’t miss the glare that the girl gave me or the napkin she slipped under the receipt either. I was sure that it had her number on it. Deric and I went and stood over where we had to pick it up and Deric handed me the napkin. I shook my head and just stuffed it in my pocket. I rested my head against his shoulder and he wrapped his arms around me. He kissed my head and rubbed my shoulder.
“I love you.” I whispered and he kissed my head again in reply.
When they called our number, we got our food, which was almost ten times as much as I knew I would eat, but I didn’t say anything as we walked back to our table...
And found someone else sitting in mine and Deric’s seat. Deric stopped, tense, and I looked up at him as he glared at the man. The man didn’t even look at Deric as he spoke.
“Hello brother.” He said and I looked at him again. “How are you doing?”
“What are you doing here Nick?” demanded Deric and I shivered at the coldness in his voice. Slowly, I took the tray from him and set it on the table. As I was turning back to him to tell him that we could go outside if he wanted, Nick grabbed my arm and I gasped.
“You.” He looked at me. “I know you from somewhere.” I looked at him startled. His eyes were very dark, as dark as Lance’s were and they scared me. “Where do I know you from?” I shook my head. I could honestly say that I had never seen this man before and for him to have recognized me from somewhere, scared me.
I looked at Deric, who was glaring at Nick with a look of murder. He would not hesitate to kill his brother if he needed to, I knew that, but I knew that I needed to make sure that didn’t happen at the same time. There was something important. What, I didn’t know, but there was something important that I just knew that we would need him for later.
“I don’t know you, now please let me go.” I said as I looked at him again. He looked at me a moment before he shrugged and let my wrist go. He took a few fries as I grabbed my Sunday. I scooped up some with the spoon and ate some. Don’t ask me how I could eat at a time like this, but I wanted it, so I was eating the ice cream.
“She smells positively delightful Deric.” Nick said. “I’m a little hungry. Mind if I take a bite out of your lovely girlfriend.”
“He gets it from his dad, doesn’t he?” I muttered and Nick glared up at me. “Oh yeah. He’s certainly related to Lance, no doubt about it.”
“She has guts Deric.” There was a dark edge to Nick’s voice now. I knew that he wasn’t happy. I also knew that I needed to not say anything else or he would treat me just like Lance did and probably put me right through that window right beside him. Trust me when I say, I don’t want to go through another window, no matter how low to the ground it is.
His face changed, just as fast as he was angry, he was now smirking at me and I really didn’t like that.
“You give me the creeps.” I sighed and shoved him over so I could sit down. He looked at me with a raised eyebrow and I rolled my eyes. I looked at Deric and he just looked at me with a weird look of worry, anger and confusion. I shrugged and ate some more of my ice cream.
“You are either very stupid or very brave.” He said.
“Neither.” I stated simply and he laughed.
“What are you doing here?” Deric questioned again as he stood there, probably not sure what to do at the moment.
“I just want to talk.” He said.
“The last time we talked, we both ended up at the end of a rope.” I raised an eyebrow at him. “That’s not something I want to deal with again.
“At least you weren’t burned at the stake or simply staked through the heart now were you?” Nick messed with my hair and I batted his hand away. He grabbed my wrist again and I glared at him. He stared at me a moment and then let go with his hands in the air in a sign of surrender. I went back to eating my ice cream.
“Anyway. I just wanted you to know that Damian had a vision last night... well, it wasn’t really a vision, but the past. Strange one, that one...”
“Get to the point.” Deric grumbled.
“Pushy.” Nick muttered and looked at Drew. Drew went every still and I felt a chill run down my spine. He looked at me and then back at Nick with wide eyes.
“A-are you telling me... that she saw my past?” he breathed and Nick looked at me. “What happened?”
“I’m out.” I breathed and dropped my ice cream as I stood. I felt suddenly very sick again as I walked past Deric. I didn’t have to hear him calling my name to know that he was following me outside. I breathed hard as he wrapped his arms around me and held my back to his chest. I trembled and I knew that it had nothing to do with the chilly night or how cold Deric was.
“Deric.” Came a small voice behind us and he turned around as he let go of me. I touched his arm as I turned and found a man standing there, watching us quietly. He looked scared and I felt bad for him as Deric stepped forward and pulled the man into his arms.
“It’s alright Damian.” Deric breathed as he held the man.
“I’m scared Deric.” He breathed. “It’s different...” I saw the man visibly tremble. He looked over Deric’s shoulder and his eyes grew large in surprise as he looked at me and then he looked angry.
Suddenly, he had my neck in his hand and I was slammed against the wall. Deric grabbed him, but Damian didn’t budge as Deric tried to pull him away.
Someone else showed up as well and tried to help, but things were starting to go grey, so I didn’t know who it was.
“Damian!” Deric yelled as the struggled to get him off of me.
“Damian! Let go!” someone else yelled and then I collapsed on the ground as I was released. I choked on the sudden rush of air as I lay there. Arms wrapped around me a second later and I heard a struggle not too far from me.
“Breathe.” Said a soft voice I didn’t recognize. “Damian. Stop. You can’t kill her. She’s Deric’s girlfriend.” The struggle slowed some and then stopped all together. I gasped for air as someone else fell to their knees beside me.
“Sam.” Deric breathed. “Baby.” He pulled me into his arms and held me tightly. He stroked my hair softly and kissed my head. I grabbed his hand in my shaky one and swallowed hard. “Get Nick. I’m taking her back to the motel. Come on Damian.” He lifted me up and carried me away.
