CHAPTER 3: I DON'T KNOW WHAT HAPPENED
The beeping is what woke me up, that and the pressure or someone’s hand on mine. I breathed shakily then moaned in pain. My chest and head and leg and whole body was in pain and the only thoughts that I had was: how was I even alive? With this pain, how was I alive…
And what happened to me?
“Sammie?” another hand touched my cheek and I flinched. Slowly I opened my eyes and moaned at the brightness of the room. I closed my eyes again and breathed hard. It hurt to breathe, which only made breathing so much harder. “Sammie… Sammie, settle down.” Sebastian breathed as he stroked my hair out of my face. “Come on, slow…” I grabbed his arm, which only hurt more and I knew how much it pained him to see me like this, just by the way his hands shook…
And still, I didn’t know what happened.
“Hu-hurts.” I choked and slowly looked at him again.
“Shh.” He murmured and looked up at the door. “She’s in pain.” Tears ran down the sides of my face and someone else came over to us. I kept my eyes on Sebastian though. “Wh-where were you? You were supposed to protect her.”
“I-I… I was on my way over there…” the voice sounded kind of distorted as I closed my eyes again. “What happened to her?”
“She was thrown out of a window!” Sebastian yelled and I whimpered. “I was on the phone with her… he threw her around and then he made her say goodbye… and then I watched her go through that window…”
“Sebastian… stop… you’re scaring her.” said that voice as the beeping got faster. I coughed again as someone else ran in. I started feeling really drowsy and numb a moment later. I let out a shaky breath as the beeping slowed again and I just lost consciousness.
I moaned as I started to wake up again.
Everything felt numb and like it weighed a ton. My whole body had a strange tingle to it and it almost felt good. Slowly, I opened my eyes and blinked when everything was blurry. When things started to become clearer, I turned my head a little and found Sebastian leaning back in his chair asleep.
Someone moved on my other side and I looked towards them. Tears came to my eyes as my father touched my cheek and breathed shakily. There were tears in his eyes as he looked me over. He looked away and I closed my eyes.
“That… bad?” I asked quietly and he sighed. “I-I don’t… remember…” I took in a breath that was harder to take than I liked as I opened my eyes again. He stroked my hair gently and sat down on my bed. I tried to move over, but my body was too numb to even try.
“No Baby Girl, stay still.” He whispered as he gently took my hand. He pulled it to his lips slowly and I saw the bandages wrapped tightly around my hand and wrist and halfway up my arm.
“How bad am I?” I asked quietly.
“You have a fractured wrist.” He said softly. “A few cuts and you had a concussion. Amazingly, you don’t have so much more than that because you fell out of a two story window.” I closed my eyes and swallowed hard. “You should have had so much worse done to you Baby. You… don’t remember anything?” slowly, I shook my head.
“Sebastian said… I was thrown around…” I coughed a few times and shuddered. “Then… t-thrown out…” he sighed and nodded.
“I’m sorry Baby.” He said softly. “Somebody should have been there with you…” I closed my eyes. I wasn’t going to have him or anyone taking the blame for something that they couldn’t help. If anything this was my fault, because of some stupid reason. Maybe I just didn’t fight back hard enough…
Well obviously. I thought to myself. If you had fought harder, then this probably never would have happened.
“Not your… fault.” I whispered and sighed tiredly. He ran his thumb over my cheek and then looked up at a knock on the door. I opened my eyes as the door opened and, who I assumed was my doctor, came in. He looked at my father, who stood up straight, not looking especially happy about him being here, though I had no clue why, since I assumed he was my doctor. Slowly, he backed up and the doctor looked at me.
“Hello Samantha.” He said and smiled a little. His green eyes looked at me sadly and then looked at Sebastian, who was now sitting up in his chair looking between Dad and the doctor. “I am Dr. Richard Zara.” I looked at the doctor now and watched him for a moment as he glanced at my father. “But you can call me Rick. How are you feeling?” he asked.
“Rather numb right now.” I said quietly and he nodded. He came over to me and sat down on my bed.
“No pain at all right now?” he asked and I shook my head. He nodded and gently touched my cheek. I flinched at the coldness of his skin and he drew back his hand again. “Sorry. My hands get kind of cold.” He told me. “Let’s sit you up some so that I can look at what we have okay.” I nodded and he reached over and grabbed a remote. He pushed a button and I jumped a little at the sudden movement of the bed moving. The head part lifted up until I was in a leaning positon and it made me feel a little better to be able to look at people at almost eyelevel instead of having to look right up at them.
“Alright.” He said. He lifted my hand that was wrapped up and looked at me a moment before he pressed on it. I flinched and gasped sharply. He nodded to himself and set my hand back on my stomach. “Does this hurt?” he asked as he pressed on my side. I shook my head. I was too numb to feel anything in my body. “You seem to have full mobility of your neck and we didn’t see anything in the x-ray that suggested that she hurt anything in her back during the fall, so that is good. Sam you are a very lucky girl.” So it would seem.
There was a knock on the door and someone I didn’t expect to see poked their head in.
“There are some officers her to talk to her.” Deric said looking at my father. “They want to know, from her, what happened.” I closed my eyes tiredly as I leaned my head back on my pillow.
“She doesn’t remember anything.” dad sighed. Slowly, I opened my eyes and looked at Deric again. He was looking at me, but when I looked at him, he looked away. I coughed a few times and groaned. “Baby?”
“Coughing hurts.” I breathed shakily and looked at Rick. He looked at me sadly and then looked at my father.
“Sam, you are going to hurt for a little while.” He looked at me again. “And when the pain goes away, you will be soar. You have bruises everywhere and we are still trying to figure out what happened exactly. I am sure that they are going to ask you to go back to your room and look at it, just to see if you remember.”
“T-this happened at h-home?” I looked at Sebastian. He leaned over in his chair and ran his hand over his tired face.
“I’m so sorry.” He breathed as he looked at me again. “I should have believed you when you said that you thought you heard something…” he buried his face in his hands. “I’m so sorry Sammie…”
“It’s not your fault.” I whispered. “I’m alive, that’s what matters.” I closed my eyes and then opened them slowly. I looked over at the door, where now not only Deric stood, but Tanya and an officer too.
“She’s exhausted and still a little under the drug.” Rick told the officer as he stood. “Don’t question her too much.” The officer nodded as he stepped forward and looked at me.
“Hey Samantha, I am Officer Thornton. How are you feeling?” his brown eyes looked at me as I closed mine. I wasn’t going to last long so I might as well get as much of it done as I could as quickly as I could. I looked at his chubby face again and sighed.
“I am starting to feel a little bit of the pain.” I said quietly. “But they tell me I’m lucky to be alive.”
“That is true.” He nodded and looked me over. “Can you tell me what happened to you?”
“I wish I could.” I whispered. “I wish I could tell you what happened to me and you could catch the person, so that I know that I can sleep at night without it happening again, but I don’t remember anything.” he nodded and pulled out a notepad. He turned to an empty page and wrote something down as I closed my eyes once more. I was tired.
“Do you know of anyone who would want to hurt you?” he asked me and I shook my head. “Ex-boyfriend maybe, jealous friend?”
“I don’t really have any friends and I’ve never had a boyfriend.” I answered with a yawn. “I’m homeschooled and work at a book store, but other than that, I don’t have a social life. I like to keep to myself. I’m one of those people who would rather sit alone in a corner and read a good book than to hang out with people.”
“Alright Samantha.” He said. “Thank you for your time. If you remember anything, please let your father or mother know so that they can get in contact with us, so we can get this guy off the street.” I nodded and he quietly left the room. Someone else followed and when I opened my eyes to see who it was, and found that Dad, Tanya and Deric were gone, leaving Sebastian and me alone. I looked over at Sebastian, who was looking down at his hands, so I took one of them and he looked at me.
“Why did you have to listen to me?” he breathed and I scowled. What was he talking about? “Why did you have to stay at the house when I told you to? Why couldn’t you be rebellious for once and leave the house? Why do you have to be so good all the time? Why did you listen to me?”
“Because you are normally right.” I said quietly and he clenched his jaw.
“I should have stayed.” He shook his head. “I knew that I should have. I had a bad feeling about all of it. I should have stayed. You were scared and I knew that. I knew that and I left you alone because you said that you would be okay for a little while without me and I knew…. I knew I should have… I knew…” he looked down at his hands again. “I knew…” he was breathing shakily.
“Please stop.” I breathed. I was already scared, no doubt about that. I was scared because I couldn’t remember what happened. I didn’t even remember what he was telling me. It made me wonder how much I didn’t remember. I needed to know where my memories ended and the void began so that I can know what I need to figure out and that scared me a lot, but what he was doing, blaming himself and talking about it like this, this was scaring me more and I did not want to deal with that. Not right now.
He must have recognized the fear on my face because his became very sad.
“I’m sorry Sammie, I didn’t meant to frighten you.” He whispered and leaned forward. He gently touched my cheek and ran his thumb lightly over one of the long cuts on my cheek. “Get some rest okay.” He stood up and kissed my forehead. I caught his arm as he stood up straight and he looked at me.
“You’re leaving me?” I gasped at the pain and he shook his head.
“No.” he stroked my hair. “No, I just have to pee.” He half smiled and I sighed with relief. I nodded.
“Leave it to your bladder to scare me.” He laughed a little and so did I, but I groaned in pain as he gently set my hand back down on my stomach. He sighed and I knew he was wondering if he should leave me at all, even if it was to relieve himself. “Go.” I said as I closed my eyes. “I’ll be here when you get back.”
“Get some rest okay.” I nodded and he kissed my head once more. “I’ll be back, I promise.”
“I’ll probably be asleep before you get back.” I mumbled as I started to dose off. I was tired.
“Good.” He squeezed my good hand lightly and kissed my forehead once more as I drifted off into sweet nothingness.
