Chapter Twenty-Three - Abby
Lucas looked at me like he was eyeing his next meal. Alexz had been dragged out, leaving the two of us in the room. Sweat formed in my palms as I took a step back away from him. “Don’t. I will shoot you dead before you can even make a move. Same goes with your little weather tricks. Your brains will be all over that fucking wall before you can even think of a drop of rain. Got it?”
“Good to see that you haven’t lost any of your charm since I left.” I replied, trying my best to think of something. He’ll know if I use the crystal. He’s on a hair trigger now. If he even thinks I’m trying something, he’s liable to blow my head off.
“Just wait until your Daddy gets a hold of you. You look good. Something is different about you. Something has changed.” He licked his lips as he looked me up and down. It made my skin crawl as he did it. “I just might have to keep you in my quarters with me tonight. I’m sure your father won’t mind once he sees what I’ve brought for him.”
“You are never going to touch me again.” I said, glaring at him. “My father doesn’t have a say in my life any more. Neither do you. I’m my own damn person now.”
“Oh? Is that so? So, that special agent Forester means nothing to you then?” He asked, grinning towards me. My pulse quickened but I didn’t move.
“No. He’s just helping me like I’m helping him. You can’t win, Lucas. Can’t you see that? My father made you think you’re on the good side but you’re not. You are killing people so my father can make millions off of drugs. What do you get out of this? Whatever it is, it can’t be worth it.” He stepped closer to me, tracing my jaw with the barrel of his gun.
“I get you, Abby. You are the only thing I’ve ever wanted that your father had to offer. All I ever wanted to do is have you to myself. To see how you look, naked and completely mine. To see how you taste. You took that away from me last time. I’m not going to let that happen again. I will have you in my bed whether you like it or not.”
“I would rather die than let you come anywhere near me.” I said softly, glaring at him. A glint of anger casted in his eyes and he spun me around, wrapping his arm around my throat. My windpipe was crushed in his elbow, my air supply decreasing. Lucas’ grip on my throat tightened as he held the gun against my right temple. The metal was cool against my skin, pressing into the tissue. I tried to kick behind me but my feet barely touched the ground, let alone him. “By tonight, I could make your little virgin body scream out in pain and pleasure.” He whispered in my ear. Desperately, I dug my nails into his arm but it didn’t even phase him. The edges of my vision began to blur and blacken as I tried to gasp for air.
“Drop her!” Cory’s voice called as he skidded to a stop a few feet away from the stage. He was blurry to me as I began to sway in between consciousness and unconsciousness. I could see the outline of his gun in his hand as he pointed it at Lucas. I felt Lucas chuckle in his chest as his grip on me loosened. Air rushed into my lungs as I gasped for it. He removed his arm around my neck and looped it through my elbows, pinning my arms behind my back.
“Agent Forester! I was hoping you would make your way this far. I even have a little prize for your courage. Bring her in!” Lucas called over his shoulder. On the left side of the auditorium, a door opened and two men walked in. Behind them was a scared looking Alexz. Her gaze traveled to me for a moment. That unsettled feeling of something returned in my gut. It was there everytime she locked eyes with me but I couldn’t understand why. It even made the crystal buzz. She looked around the room until her eyes landed on Cory who looked at her like he had seen a ghost.
“Alexz.” He said, the gun lowering slightly. She let out a gasp and ran towards him, wrapping her arms around his neck in a tight hug. Something in my chest tightened as I watched them. She pulled away, pressing a kiss against his lips. I turned away, glancing at the floor as tears brimmed my eyes slightly. I knew it was going to hurt but I didn’t think it would this much. It was like someone was dangling me over the edge of a pit and had just let me fall. The two acted like no one else was in the room with them, their lips moving together as he squeezed her tightly.
“Oh. Does this bother you?” Lucas whispered it my ear. He forced me to look back at them. “To see someone, you love not love you back? To see someone else hold them the way you want to be held? Are you in love with Agent Forester, Abigail?”
“Shut up, Lucas.” I said, wishing I could hurt him. Below, Cory had completely lowered his gun and had his arms wrapped around Alexz.
“I’m so sorry. I thought you were dead. I would have come sooner. Are you hurt? Did they do anything to you?” He asked. She shook her head.
“No. I’m fine. Cory, you need to give Scorpio the crystal. That’s the only way he’ll let us leave. He told me if you hand it over, you and I are free to leave.” She said, placing her hands on his shoulders.
“Abby too?” He asked, glancing at me. She gripped his face, forcing his gaze away from me.
“No. That’s her own business. He said he will deal with her on his own. This is our chance though. We can give him the crystal and start our own lives together. Just you and me like we always talked about.”
“I can’t just leave her here. Not after everything she’s done for me and everything she’s been through. I’ve got to save the both of you.” He insisted, looking back at me. A smile crossed my lips that he returned. He raised the gun and pointed it at Lucas again over Alexz’s shoulder. “Let her go, Lucas. This is over.”
“That’s what you think, Forester.” Lucas called. From my spot on the stage, I could see Alexz pull something from the back of her dress. It caught the light, a shimmer reflecting off the steel blade of a dagger. I instantly recognized it as one of my father’s favorites. It was part of a collection he uses all the time to kill people quickly and silently. Alexz moved so that she was standing behind Cory.
“Cory!” I called out. I was cut off though my Lucas covering my mouth with his wrist that held the gun. Bearing my teeth, I bit down into his skin and tasted blood. He let out a howl as he yanked his arm away. His grip on me loosened and I was able to pull free, jumping off the stage. Cory looked at me confused as Alexz moved the blade towards him. Sprinting, I pushed him out of the way as she went to stab him in the side. She missed, connecting with the skin on my upper arm. Pain seared through me as I yanked myself away, landing on my side on the wooden floor.
“You little bitch!” Alexz seethed, glaring down at me. Cory looked from me to her confused.
“Alexz! What are you doing?” He asked, still pointing the gun at Lucas. She let out an evil sounding laugh as she wiped my blood from the knife with the bottom of her dress.
“I tried to reason with you, Cory. We could have run off together. But no. You just had to save this worthless little tramp. I guess that’s just the kind of guy you are though, right?” She sneered at him. Realization started to sink in as Cory’s face hardened.
“How long have you been a double agent for?” He snarled. She let out an amused sighed, waving the knife in the air. Holding my wound, I climbed back to my feet. Blood streamed down my arm from the cut but it wasn’t too deep.
“Double agent? This isn’t James Bond, Cory. But not long. Probably about three or four months now. Right after the device came up missing. How do you think it managed to end up needing me to control it? And who do you think caused the explosion at the lab?”
“You did that? You killed thirty people! If Scorpio gets his hands on Abby and the crystal, the entire world would be in danger.”
“Not the entire world. Just the parts we don’t like. Believe me, my husband and I have had long talks about it.” My eyes flashed to her left hand. A ring I recognized twinkled in the sunlight from the windows. My mother’s wedding bands were placed on her left right finger. Anger swelled in my chest as I moved to grab them from her. Cory held his arm up and stopped me. I tried to push past him but he stood firm.
“Give me those! You have no right to wear them!” I exclaimed, angry tears threatening to fall.
“Oh, honey. That’s no way to talk to your new step-mother.” She said, pointing the knife at me. “Just wait until your daddy finds out who I’m bringing home tonight. He will be so thrilled to see you again. It’ll take some time but I think you’ll grow to love our new little family.”
“I’ll never be a part of your family. I have no family.” I said, glaring at her. “Can’t you see he’s just using you to get to Cory? Once he’s done with you, he’ll kill you too. Is that what you want?” She shrugged.
“I thought the same way at first but then you came back into the picture. I told him I would make sure his only child in the whole wide world would return home and I would take her under my wing. Make sure you are fit to inherit the throne that your father has spent his entire life building. With you being so stubborn, I’m sure my safety is of no question at this point.” She glanced at the silver watch on her wrist. “Oh dear. Supper will begin shortly. We must go. Shall we?” She looked expectantly at me.
“She’s not going anywhere.” Cory said, his grip on my elbow firm.
“Agent Forester, she has two choices: she can come willingly with us and we let you walk out of here alive or we force her to go, killing you in the process.” Lucas said, stepping off the stage and walking towards us. Four armed guards followed behind him, automatic weapons in their hands pointed at us.
“You gotta plan?” I whispered low enough for him to hear.
“Only if you trust me.” He shot back, looking around.
“What do you mean?” I asked.
“Take her.” He said, looking at Alexz. My head snapped up to look at him.
“Good to see you are the same guy I remembered you to be, Cory.” Alexz said, a smirk on her face. She glanced down at my wrists. “I see he even put you through the same training program as me as well.” I glared at her before turning back to look at him.
“What are you doing?” I asked, one of the men grabbing my arm. I tried to wiggle of his grasp but he held firmly, pulling me away from Cory.
“He doesn’t care, Abby. He never did.” Alexz said, brushing a piece of my hair behind my ear. I shook my head away from her, tears filling my eyes as I looked at Cory.
“Cory, you promised!”
