Chapter Thirty-Six

Current day, 08:00 AM,

The First Baptist Church of Mount Silver, Virginia.

“Pat him down!” Vick said with a frown. He stood back from the church’s doorway with a 9mm pistol in his hand as Cole entered the building.

Cole lifted the dog into the air with two hands as Bohannan searched his body for weapons. “He’s clean, Vick.”

“Daddy!” Hunter yelled as the boy shot upright from where he sat in a distant pew, his shrill voice echoing throughout the large church.

Cole spied two very familiar heavily armed Radii guards standing on either side of his family and they were intently watching the child. It was Cathy and Del Toro and they were dangerously close...too close to his family. Obviously, they didn’t listen to his warning. He wondered if he shouldn’t have let Kevin shoot the guards like he wanted to. “Please! Just stay right there, son! It’ll be alright. Daddy just needs to give these men this G.I.Z.M.O. unit, erm...the spy dog and then we’ll leave, okay?”

Frannie pulled the boy back to her side and mouthed the words, “I love you” to Cole.

Cole produced a reassuring smile and then cut his eyes at Vick. “Let them go. I’m here with the dog, just as you asked.”

Vick tapped the barrel of his pistol to his ammo vest as if in contemplation and then pointed it at the dog. “Nah, I don’t think so. That little mutt right there has a date with destiny. Me and my bosses don’t need anyone around that might talk when D.C. celebrates the 4th of July early this year.”

“What the hell are you talking about, Vick?” Cathy asked. “I mean, I thought those things were just experiments, right? To protect the country?”

“What’s it matter to you, Dunham? You get a paycheck much larger than what you got in the service, don’t you?” Vick asked in annoyance. “By the way, didn’t this asshole shoot you?”

The woman looked over and found Vance looking back at her with the same amount of concern written on his face. “No, I told you and the doc it was the Chinese...it was the Chinese. I’ve never seen that dude before.” Lie.

“Alright, Cathy, if it makes you feel better, I’ll say I believe you. Now, Agent Hitchens, it appears we have some unfinished business...for me and Cathy,” Vick said and then pointed his pistol at Cole and fired.

Frannie screamed.
