Chapter Seventeen

[Earl]

Bella finally opened the door of her apartment to let us in. “Sorry it took so long.” She said and I shook my head. For a woman, she certainly has the moves to climb to the walls to open the windows of her apartment.

We entered the room and I looked around the see that everything was neatly placed. So this was Bella’s house. I imagined something more extravagant since I’m sure she has the money to buy a much better house.

“Now, where is it…” She trotted along the living room, searching for something.

“What’re you doing?” I asked her.

“We need to find some clues so we can find Sebastian.” She said. “I’m sure he has something to do with the attack.”

I blinked at her and nodded. Moving my body through the kitchen, I tried to search for something that can lead us to Bella’s fiancé. I decided to ignore Matthias who was casually sitting on the high stool.

I saw a mobile phone on top of the microwave. “Hey, how ’bout this?” I took it and Bella looked at it. Her eyes sparkled and she quickly ran towards me to get the phone.

“This is Sebby’s phone!” She announced and Matthias only raised his brows. He moved towards us and leaned on my shoulders to look at the phone.

“Wow, why’d he leave his phone?” He asked and Bella looked at us.

“He probably forgot it again.”

Matthias narrowed his eyes but remained quiet. We watched Bella go inside her room and after a while, came back with a cord and a laptop in her hands.

She opened the inbox of the phone and there were no messages.

“Damn, he installed an app where it automatically deletes its messages.” She clicked her tongue.

We watched Bella go inside her room and after a while, came back with a cord and a laptop in her hands.

She boot up the laptop and plugged the cord to Sebastian’s phone and into the laptop.

Bella looked at Matthias. “Can you hack it?”

“What? You can’t hack something like this?” He sarcastically asked and Bella only rolled her eyes at him.

“Well, sorry to inform you, I’m a debt collector not a hacker.” She crossed her arms and Matthias sighed.

He quickly typed on the keyboard and in no time, he managed to recover the deleted messages of Sebastian’s phone. We all looked at the screen and saw the list of messages inside the phone.

The messages all belong to a name Bianco.

“Who’s Bianco?” I asked Matthias and he shrugged his shoulders.

“Guess we’ll have to contact this Bianco guy, sì?”

Matthias leaned on the wall with a cigarette in his mouth. He was holding me close to him while we waited for that Bianco guy to appear. Bella sent him a message to meet in one of the café’s in Italy but I’m not really sure if he’s going to show up.

“Hey, is he really going to appear?” I asked Matthias who blew a puff of smoke from his mouth. He looked to the side without even moving his body.

“Not sure. If he does, he’s an idiot.” He said and I forced a smile. Geez, why did I even ask him. “But if that Bianco really did show up, we can finally track down Bella’s fiancé.”

I thought for a moment. “Who would kidnap Bella’s fiancé anyway? I mean, is he working at the same field Bella is?”

“From what I read from Bella’s information, her fiancé’s working at a telecomm company.”

I blinked. “What?”

“He might have some dangerous information from the Mafia that’s why they want him. He’s probably dead by now but…” His fingers tightened around the cigarette.

I gulped at what he said. “We won’t know until we see it with our eyes, right?”

He remained quiet for a moment, probably finding the right words to tell me that no matter what happens, when you cross the line with the Mafia, it’s either you’re dead…or you’re dead.

“Heads up.”

We peaked against the wall and saw that someone just entered the café. He was wearing a black suit, black shades and was holding a briefcase. From the looks of it, he’s practically screaming he’s from the Mafia.

“Let’s go.” Matthias pulled me towards the café.

They talked for about 20 minutes before the man stood up. He turned back to say something to Bella and I saw her face struck with agony. I looked at Matthias who was only sipping his coffee, obviously not interested in what’s happening between Bianco and Bella.

Bianco walked past our table and exited the restaurant. I stood up to approach Bella. Her head was low and I can see her shoulders all tensed up.

“Are you alright, Bella? What happened?” I sat on the chair across her and flinched when I saw her eyes dangerously lit with the urge to kill. She looked at me and I gulped at her face.

“I’m going to kill them. I’m going to fucking kill them.”

“Wait Bella…what happened? Calm down…”

BLAG!

I twitched when I saw the man Bella met a while ago now lying down on the floor with a bloody nose.

Matthias walked around him while lighting the cigarette dangling in his lips.

Bella stood in front of the man and squatted down. “You made a big mistake by kidnapping Sebastian.” She spat and the man only smirked.

“He knows too much, he might as well be dead.” He said and I felt angry at that.

Matthias suddenly grabbed a fistful of his hair and forced him to look up to him. The man groaned in pain but was still smiling. “Even if you torture me, I won’t tell you anything. The boss’ words are absolute. His plan…”

Matthias suddenly kicked his face with his knee making the man scream in pain. I cringed when I watch him flew across the middle of the room.

“Who said we’re gonna force you to talk?” He cracked his knuckles and I flinched when I saw his eyes gleaming sadistically. “I’m going to be your worst nightmare.”

I stared at Matthias in disbelief.

It’s been three hours since Matthias forced me to leave the room. I can still hear the screams of agony inside the room and hell I can’t even imagine what’s happening inside.

I sighed and looked around the abandoned building. Geez, I can’t believe I’m letting Matthias do this. I know he’s not gonna kill the man but even though I want to make him stop, he’s the only that can tell us where Sebastian is.

He said he wasn’t Bianco and he’s just one of the underlings he sent out to talk to Bella. Apparently, the Bianco guy wanted to tell Bella that her fiancé was being held captive by Enzo. The assassin who tried to kill Bella.

What the hell’s happening anyway?

I leaned on the wall and stared outside. “I wonder when our next date will…?” I stopped and suddenly blushed. Seriously Earl? You’re thinking this like this right now?

“Please!!!! I’m begging you, stop!!!!”

I cringed when I head the man’s screaming.

“Who told you I’m gonna stop, you fucker? I’m going to skin you alive and…”

I didn’t even bother to hear what Matthias was saying.

Two days passed and we finally found Sebastian. Matthias and Bella infiltrated Enzo’s hide-out and they managed to get Sebastian.

And by getting Sebastian, I mean Sebastian’s corpse.

And it’s been two days since I saw Bella. Matthias told me she arranged the funeral for her fiancé. He also said that Enzo wasn’t there when they attacked their HQ.

That means Enzo’s still out there trying to kill Bella.

“Don’t you think it’s bad for Bella to be alone?” I asked Matthias who just came out of the bathroom. He threw the wet towel on his hair and sighed.

“It’s her choice. As much as I want her to stay with us...” He said with bitterness and I sighed. I guess he does have a point.

We stayed silent for a moment before I finally decided to speak. “Matthias, why do Enzo want to kill Bella?” I asked him with a low voice.

Matthias sat beside me. Water was still dripping from his wet hair but I ignored it. “They didn’t want Bella to ruin their plan. Whatever it is.”

I wonder what kind of plan? Damn, it’s definitely hard to understand the conflict between the Mafia families.

“Enzo’s a paid assassin. I’m sure he’s being supported by that Bianco bastard.”

“What’re you gonna do now?”

“I’m going to find out who Bianco is.”

“Jesus, Earl! You’re finally back!!!” Liza approached me fast. “What the hell happened to you?! The news about the attack at the nearby restaurant was…”

I smiled at her. “I’m fine Liza. Sorry if you had to take care of my work.”

“It doesn’t matter but…” She followed me inside the office. “Are you really sure you’re alright?!”

“Yeah, I’m fine.” I said while I sat down on the chair.

She sighed in relief and sat on the chair across mine. “I thought sir Matthias took you away or something. You guys were gone for like, how many days.”

I chuckled at what she said. “No, we just…uhm, something happened.”

“Yeah, I can tell.” She grinned at me. “I’m so envious of you!”

I stared at her and sighed. If she only know what’s really happening to us. But I don’t want to drag Liza down on this business. Plus, I’ll be killed if I leaked information from the Mafia.

Just like what happened to Bella’s fiancé.

I looked to the side of my table and saw the invitation for their wedding.

And suddenly, my heart ached.

I entered Matthias’ office and I saw him talking to his phone. When he saw me, he motioned me to enter but continued his conversation. I sat on the sofa and stared out of the window.

He finally finished the call and looked at me. “What do you want to eat for dinner?”

I looked down. “Anything.”

“Okay, I’ll tell Rick to…” He gathered the folders on his table and stood up.

“Matthias, you won’t leave me, right?”

He stopped and stared at me. “What?”

“You won’t die, right? You can’t die.” I stared back at him.

When I found out Bella’s fiancé died just like that, I can’t stop myself from thinking that maybe one day, one day, Matthias will end up like him.

Like everyone end up from the Mafia.

They kill and they die.

Just like that.

What will I do if I found that you’re missing one day…and when I finally find you, you’re already dead?

I can’t stop myself from thinking this.

I can’t live without him anymore.

“Hey.”

I noticed Matthias was already standing in front of me. I also noticed that my hands were trembling with fear as I thought of those things.

He squatted in front of me and looked straight into my eyes. “I’m not going to die.”

Once he said the word, tears finally dropped down from my eyes. I don’t even know why I’m feeling this…but seeing how it easily ended with Bella and her fiancé made me think countless of things of how someone from the Mafia can simply take away the life of your loved ones.

Matthias groaned. “Geez, don’t cry.”

I wiped my tears with the back of my hand. I’m acting like a child but I can’t help it.

“Matthias, I don’t want you to die.”

“I told you, I’m not gonna die.”

I suddenly hugged him and we ended up falling down on the floor. “Promise me, please. Please.”

He caressed my back and I know he’s trying to comfort me.

“Boss, we’re here to…”

I felt my body froze in embarrassment when three guys came inside the room. I quickly latched myself away from Matthias who was now glaring at the three men who entered.

“How many times do I have to tell you to fucking knock, you fuckers?!!”

The three guys twitched in fear and the all bowed their heads at him. “We deeply apologize!!”

I sighed.

I went out of Matthias’ room since he said that he needs to talk to those morons. When I looked ahead of me, I saw Bella walking towards.

“Bella!”

She smiled a little. “Oh, hi Earl.”

I can see dark bags under her eyes. It’s obvious she’s not getting any sleep. “Uh, about Sebastian…”

Bella smiled. “Thanks for all the things you’ve done to me, Earl. I can’t thank you enough for all the help you and Matthias gave me.”

“It’s only natural for us to help you, Bella, you don’t have to thank us for that.” I said and she chuckled.

“You’re a good guy. It’s no wonder Matthias fell in love with you.”

I blushed at what she said and that made her laugh even more.

“Are you here to talk to Matthias?”

“Yeah, I wanted to tell him that everything’s fine. Sebastian was given a private funeral.” She said. “I still can’t believe about this but…I don’t have any other choice but to accept this.”

I stared at her and I know she’s fighting the urge to cry. I held her shoulders and smiled. “I’m always here for you.”

“Thanks, thanks so much Earl. Thank you.”
