Chapter Twenty Three

I stared at the soup in front of me.

“Come on, eat.” Nicholas urged me with a grin. “Don’t worry, it’s not poisoned. And even if it is, I know you won’t die from it.”

I tried picking up the spoon but I dropped it.

“Ah…are you…” Nicholas froze when he saw me looking at him with fear in my eyes.

“I told you not to drop the gun, Damian. How many times do I have to teach you to hold it right?”

Nicholas smiled and grabbed the spoon. “Here, I’ll feed you.” He gently scooped the soup with the spoon, blew it for a few times before holding it in front of me. “Say ah~”

I briefly opened my mouth and he put it inside me. The sweet yet salty flavour of the soup made my stomach churn. I made a face and he chuckled.

“You’re so cute Matthias. Just like a child.” He kissed me on the lips and giggled.

His phone suddenly rang and we both looked at it. He stood up and walked to the end table to answer the call.

“What do you want? I’m busy.” His eyes widened and I saw his hand twitched. He smirked. “I see. So they’re finally here. About time they get here.”

Huh? Who’s here?

“I’ll just have to step out of a little bit.” He smiled at me. “I’ll be back soon.”

He left the room.

I closed my eyes and sighed.

What’s happening to me? I can’t think straight. Everything’s in a haze.

Hours passed and I remained sitting there on the bed, without moving a muscle.

“You should really eat something, Matthias.” Damascus put the tray on the table and walked up to me. He reached up to touch my head but I slapped his hand away.

“Don’t you fucking touch me, old man.” I glared at him and was staring at me with shocked eyes.

“Matthias, when did you…?”

I stopped responding to people. After I killed that person, I realized how stupid the world was. People will do anything to manipulate you. If you won’t do anything, you’ll end up being killed.

That’s what Marcus taught me.

I can’t trust anyone. Not even my mother, my sister nor Damascus and Harry.

I stayed inside my room for a week. I never came out. Whenever I remember how much I wanted to go outside to play with the other kids, I laugh at the thought of it. Playing with them won’t bring me anything good.

The world slowly forgot my existence. Harry was still visiting me but I refused to see him. And after a while, he stopped coming to our house.

I knew it. People will abandon you if you start ignoring them.

It’s probably for the best. I don’t need anyone. My sole existence was to kill people.

I’ll be the next boss of the Mafia. There’s no time for me to make friends. There’s no time for me to love anyone. Useless feelings like that don’t matter.

I glared at the woman whom I once called my mother. She was standing by the door and looking at me. “Matthias. I’m home.”

I raised my brows at him and smirked. “So?”

She remained still and shook her head. “Nothing. I just wanna let you know. Have you been doing well?”

I averted my eyes from her. “Shut up.”

She slowly smiled. “I guess he finally break you, didn’t he?”

I froze at what she said. I grabbed the nearest book on my bed and threw it on her. She was hit by it but never moved.

“Go away!! Go away! I don’t need you! I don’t need anyone!! I fucking hate you all!!! I hate you!!!!!!”

“Gomen [Sorry], Matthias. Gomennasai [I’m so sorry].”

I closed my eyes and heaved a sigh. Why does it keep on playing inside my mind? I can’t stop it from appearing. I can’t stop hearing these voices.

“Because I love you Matthias. I love you so much. I can’t let you go.”

My hands twitched when a familiar voice rang inside my mind.

It was sweet, it was tender and it was genuine.

“Matthias! Matthias!!!Matthias!!!!!”

I stared at the guy calling in front of me. His face was stricken with worry and he was looking at me with such sincere eyes.

“Huh?” I blinked at him and realized that he was shaking me hard.

“Wake up Matthias!! We’re here to save you! But we have to go now!” He screamed in my face. When he saw that I wasn’t moving, he growled and slapped me on the face. “WAKE UP YOU IDIOT!!!!”

Everything snapped inside me and I groaned in pain. My head was hurting and my body was sore, like it’s burning. “Fuuuck, it hurts, god damn it!!!”

Earl pulled out a weak smile. “Come on! I’m gonna take this off!” He pulled the ropes from my wrist and when he freed me, he helped me to stand up.

“Shit, wait…it really hurts like hell.” I hissed when I felt my veins were stinging.

“I know but we don’t have much time!”

“Yeah, you don’t.”

We both looked at Nicholas who was standing in front of the door. “I’m stunned by how you managed to get past me Earl, but do you really think I’m gonna let you go that easily?!”

Earl glared at him and I hissed again when his hand tightened on my arm. “You fucking asshole. I’ll fucking kill you!!”

“Yeah, I can’t wait to see that!” He pointed a gun at us but Earl beat him to it. I was shocked to see him holding one of my twin guns.

“Where’d you get that?” I asked him but he ignored me.

Nicholas laughed maniacally. “Can you really shoot me?! You’ve never even killed a person, Earl! You’re weak! You don’t have the right to stay with someone like Matthias!!”

I can feel Earl was shivering beside me. The gun he was holding was also trembling but he didn’t lose his grip. He kept the gun pointed at Nicholas.

“I don’t care. I’d rather let him stay with me rather than someone like you. You’ll never love Matthias the same way I do.”

My eyes widened at what he was saying.

Earl glared at Nicholas. “I’m weak. And I know nothing about the Mafia. I can’t do anything right for Matthias but…” He gulped and started to cry. “I don’t care. As long as I’m with him, I’ll do everything to make him feel how much I love him.”

“Shut up!! You don’t know anything! I want him! I can give him everything he wants!!”

In an instant, I seize the gun from Earl, aimed it on Nicholas’ hand and shoot it. Blood spurted out his hand and he dropped the gun.

“M-Matthias?!!” He looked at me with pain in his eyes.

“You know, when you point a gun at someone. You should shoot them without any hesitation.” I said and I smirked at him.

I remember it correctly now.

“I’ll never understand why you want someone like me, but I’m not your fucking toy.”

Earl looked up at me in disbelief.

“You managed to wake up the old me but – ” I smiled at Earl who was still supporting me. “ – this weak guy here brought me back again.”

No, from the very beginning, Earl was the person who pulled me out of that dark place.

He was the one who showed me that everything I used to believe was wrong.

The voice calling my name brought butterflies in my stomach. And it feels so freaking good.

“W-why? Why are you choosing him?!! I have everything! I’ll give you everything Matthias!!”

I looked at him and smirked. “You see Nicholas. I already have everything.” I aimed the gun on him and smiled. I wrapped my free arm on Earl’s shoulders and grinned. “He’s the only one I need.”

Yeah, he’s the only one I need to keep me sane. Without Earl, I’ll just return to that dark and empty place.

“N-no…no…I don’t want you to leave…you’re the only one…” Nicholas was sobbing as he clutched his wounded hand. “I don’t have anything anymore…”

Earl glared at him. “Are you fucking insane?!” He screamed and I looked at him in awe. “What the fuck, man?! You’re telling me you don’t have anything?! Just look at you!! You’re freaking Nicholas Hall!! The world looks up to you! A lot of people will die just to be you, don’t you know that?!! Don’t let this asshole ruin your life just like that!!”

He panted at his sudden outburst and were both looking at him with wide eyes.

Earl’s face turned red. “T-that’s what I think…!”

Nicholas dropped down on the floor and slowly laughed. “Y-you don’t understand…nobody wanted me…nobody…not even my father…”

Earl smiled. “I was like that you know. Nobody cared for me too. I wanted to fit in but I can never find my place. Until I met Matthias. He’s the one who changed me. He’s the one who showed me how beautiful the world is.”

Urk, the way he used his words were really embarrassing. Doesn’t he know that?

“I’m sure you’ll find that person who’ll make you feel that way too. They’ll show you how wonderful and amazingly awesome you are. Because I found mine, and I’m never gonna let him go again.”

We ran out of the room and down the corridor.

“How’re you feeling?” Earl asked. I staggered to run along with him but the effect of the drugs was still draining me.

“I’m fine.” I answered.

He narrowed his eyes and bit his lip. “Come on, we’re gonna get out of here!”

Earl guided me through the long corridor and when we turned to the corner, he gasped.

“Where are they?!” He asked while looking around.

I blinked. “What? Who?”

“Damascus and your father came here with me.” He answered and I gagged at what he said.

No way those two came here. “Wait Damascus and my dad? Are you freaking kidding me?” I asked in disbelief and he smirked for a moment.

“Yeah, but they’re not here. Where are they?” He asked himself.

“There they are!!!” A couple of guards saw us and they pointed their guns at us while running. I instantly pulled the silver gun I had and aimed it on the vital parts of their body. I shot them and they dropped down on the floor, wincing in pain.

I stared at Earl. He pulled out his phone that was ringing and quickly answered it.

I listened to the phone call.

“Hey…” I twitched when I heard Marcus’ voice. “You should probably get out of there now.”

“Huh? What do you mean?”

“Damascus destroyed the device they were using the block our communications but he found something that isn’t good.”

“Just cut the crap out and tell us what it is!!” I screamed on the phone.

“Oh you finally saved my useless son, haven’t you? You have to get out of there if you still want to live. There’s a time bomb planted all over the mansion and it’s about to…oh damn, 10 more seconds? Okay, you still have 10…oh, 9 more seconds…8 now.”

I cursed at what he just said and looked at Earl.

“Hey, do you trust me?”

He blinked. “Huh? What’re you talking about?”

I suddenly grabbed him on the waist and carried him while I ran straight to the window. “W-whoa! Wait just a damn minute! MATTHIAS!!”

The glass shattered as we jumped out of the window. I looked down and calculated how high we were. Well shit, we’re up pretty high.

Shit, my eyes were getting blurry. I hugged Earl close to me. I wrapped my hand around his head, rotated our bodies so it’ll be me who’ll hit the ground instead of him.

I sighed and lay down on his lap. “Just shut up. I’m tired of getting involved with those two. They’re big enough to know what to do.”

I was slowly losing consciousness and before I can feel the impact of the ground I heard everything exploded around me.

I can hear Earl’s faint voice but I can’t see anything.

Shit, his voice really sounds like melody in my ears. The darkness was slowly disappearing and I finally see Earl in front of me. Wait, what? Why’s he small? Oh come on, not another flashback.

I saw him looking at me and waving. He was standing in front of a gravestone.

“I hope we can see each other again! Thank you so much!”

I resisted the urge to chuckle. Damn, he’s so cute especially when he’s smiling. He stopped waving and looked to the right only to smile even more. I looked as well and saw another kid walking towards him.

I blinked a couple of times. Is that me?

Earl ran towards the kid and hugged him close. “Thanks for everything.”

“Geez, it’s because you’re weird.”

Earl laughed. “You are too! Hey, will we see each other again?”

“Dunno.” The kid smiled. “By the way, what’s your name kid?”

“I’m Earl!”

“Earl, my name is – ”
