Chapter Twenty Four

I opened my eyes and gasped out loud when I saw the whole mansion was burning. There were debris everywhere and I can still hear some explosion from somewhere.

I tried to get up but Matthias’ arms were still entangled with mine. I looked at him and slowly got up. “Matthias…?” I brushed his bangs away from his face and my eyes widened when I saw blood dripping from his forehead.

“M-Matthias?!” I gently shook him but he remained still.

Please, don’t.

My trembling hands reached up to check his pulse. My heart was beating so fast and I can feel tears were already streaming down my cheeks.

“Matthias…answer me, please.” I sobbed even harder when I can’t feel his pulse anymore. I hastily put my ears on his chest to hear something, anything that’s beating but there was nothing.

“Fuck no. Don’t do this to me.” I pulled his limp body towards mine and hugged him tight. “Please Matthias, open your eyes. Don’t do this me. Not now. No.” I cried even more.

“No Matthias, please. Please don’t do this to me.”

“Hey, Earl. Earl.” I slowly opened my eyes. My focus was blurred but I recognized who it was that was shaking me.

I tried to get up but failed. “Uhm…” My throat was dry and I coughed a bit.

Bella sighed and grabbed a nearby chair. She put it in front of me and sat down. “You look so pale Earl. Have you been eating?”

I looked behind her and stared at Matthias who was still lying on the hospital bed. The ticking sound of the medical device attached to him was echoing through the room.

“You have to eat something Earl.” She said and I shook my head. I rubbed my eyes, sat up straight and watched over Matthias.

“I’m not hungry yet.” I whispered.

Bella looked at me with a worried face. She sighed and tapped my head. “I know you’re dead worried about Matthias. But it won’t help him if you stay like that.”

“It’s my fault this happened to him.” I bit my lips. My eyes were glued on his still body. I’ve been watching him for three days, waiting for him to finally wake up. But he still hasn’t opened his eyes.

I don’t know what to do anymore.

The doctors said he hit his head pretty bad and it might take a while for him to recover. The thought of him…

No, Earl stop thinking about it!

“Come on, Earl. Please. Eat.” She urged and I looked at her in remorse.

She laid the food on the table and motioned me to come. I reluctantly stood up and walked towards her to sit on the chair. She handed me the fork and pushed the bowl of salad towards me.

“Here. Do you want some water or soda?” She asked.

I lazily shrugged my shoulders. “Water.”

Bene [Okay].” She walked to the fridge and pulled out a bottle of water. I stabbed the salad with the fork, sighed and looked at Matthias.

“Earl.” Bella sternly called my name and I groaned.

After forcing me to eat, Bella said she have to go since her work really needs her now. She gave me some instructions and bid me goodbye.

I turned my chair to Matthias and watched him again. I haven’t taken a bath for almost three days but I just don’t care anymore. No, it doesn’t matter anymore. Nothing matters as long as Matthias remained lying there, unconscious.

“Matthias.” I called out his name again and before I knew it, there were tears on my eyes again. “When will you wake up?”

I can hear his steady breathing and it was making me anxious.

There were a lot of ‘what if’s’ going in my mind. And as much as I want to stop, I can’t.

There was a knock on the door. “Ci scusi [Excuse us].”

I gasped when two bulk men wearing black suits entered the room. I quickly put my guard up and held Matthias’ hand tight.

“W-what do you want?” I narrowed my eyes at them but they just stared at me.

“Who’re you?” One of them asked with an arrogant voice and I shakily stood up. Oh come on, not again.

“Idiota. That’s boss’ lover.” I blushed at what he said. How did they know?! “You know, the one who went to the HQ while we’re interrogating Enzo.” The one with the bald head answered and the one wearing the shades nodded his head.

“Oh, I see. Sorry about that.” He sheepishly grinned at me. “We were asked by the boss to give this to his son.” He said as he handed me a white paper bag. I looked at it before taking it.

“What’s this?”

“A change of clothes some toothbrush, shampoo and…”

The bald head rolled his eyes. “He could just look inside.”

I smiled at them. “Thanks a lot.” I held out my hand. “I’m Earl Harrison by the way.”

They shook their hands with mine and smiled back.

“I’m Simone – ” The one with the bald head introduced. He pointed at the other one. “ – and this idiota is Bardo.”

“Ah nice to meet you.”

“For someone dating the boss, you’re pretty awesome yourself, aren’t you?”

I flushed at what Simone said and nodded. “W-well…it’s a complicated story.”

“Don’t worry about it. We’ll support the boss even if he’s gay.”

They both laughed and I just forced a smile.

“So, he still hasn’t woken up yet?” Bardo said as he looked at Matthias.

I shook my head. “It’s been three days.”

“Don’t worry about it Earl, I’m sure the boss will wake up any time soon.” Simone encouraged and I smiled.

“Yes, yes he will. Thanks.”

After talking for a bit, Bardo and Simone finally left.

I sat down on the sofa and looked at Matthias.

“Don’t worry about it Earl, I’m sure the boss will wake up any time soon.”

Yeah, he will. He’ll wake up. I just have to believe.

I twitched when I heard Matthias’ voice. I quickly got up from the bed and looked at him. His eyes were opened and he was looking at the ceiling.

When he looked at me, everything around me stopped.

The air, the time, the sound.

I staggered towards him. “M-Matthias…”

“Earl…” When he was about to reach up to touch me, he suddenly disappeared.

Wait, what? No, don’t go.

Please Matthias, don’t leave me.

“NO!!!” I suddenly got up, knocking my bag on the floor as I panted out loud. The room was dark and the only light present was the one attached on the headboard of Matthias’ bed.

I tried to calm my heart down.

It’s just a dream?

I ran towards Matthias and saw that he was still sleeping. His breathing was slow and it made me sigh.

“Oh man…I really need to stop this.” I rubbed my face and dropped down on the floor.

I’m so exhausted.

I pulled the can of soda at the vending machine and turned around to walk back to Matthias’ room. Some of the nurses walking past me were giving me a nod and I was smiling at them.

How many days has it been? Four, five no, probably six already.

Six days and Matthias still remained in a slumber. Bella has been visiting me to give me a change of clothes. She was forcing me to go home already and take a rest but I’ve been refusing her ever since.

I can’t bear the pain of not being here when Matthias wakes up.

I blinked when I saw Matthias’ door was open. I quickly ran towards his room and gasped when I saw Marge and Damascus.

“Oh my god, Earl!” I stepped inside and Marge gave me a tight hug. “You look like shit! Did you take a bath already?”

I slowly shook my head. “No…not yet.”

Damascus was talking to the doctor who was checking up on Matthias’ stats.

“Damn, it’s hard to believe something like this happened to my idiot brother.”

“Y-yeah, I know.” I tried to laugh but I coughed instead. Marge patted my back and her face was worried.

“Are you okay, Earl?”

I smiled at her. “Yes, sorry. Excuse me.” I walked to the comfort room and once I was inside, I locked the door and coughed even more.

My chest feels so tight and I can’t breathe. My stomach was burning it feels like someone punched me. I held onto the sink for support and wheezed even more.

Sweat was dripping down my face.

What the hell’s happening to me?

I shut my eyes and finally dropped down on the floor.

My eyes widened when I suddenly threw up on the toilet.

“Earl? Are you alright?!” I heard Marge’s voice from behind the door. I quickly flushed it down and wiped my mouth with the back of my mind.

“Y-yeah, I’m fine! I’ll be out in a minute!” I hastily washed my face and when I looked at the mirror, I saw how haggard my face was. The bags under my eyes were dark, my lips were dry and my cheeks were pale as white.

The anxiety building inside me was slowly eating me up.

I finally got out of the comfort room and Marge gasped when she saw my face. “Oh shit, what happened to you?! You look worse than before!”

I laughed but it came out dry.

Damascus approached me and handed me a plastic bag filled with fruits. “You know you really should eat something. Everyone’s worried about you.”

I weakly smiled and fought the tears that were about to burst out. “I’m sorry for all the trouble. I’m sorry I can’t do anything for him.”

Marge suddenly growled and slapped me hard on the face. I stumbled down on the floor and looked at her with wide eyes. “M-Marge?”

Damascus was still wearing his poker face but he was looking at Marge.

“Do you think Matthias will be happy if he sees you like this?! Have you seen yourself in the mirror, Earl?! You look like you’re about to collapse any minute! Do us all a favour and take care of yourself!” She put both her hands on her waist and glared at me. “What you’re doing for my brother is more than enough and we appreciate it! But seriously, do something for yourself and eat! And geez, take a bath will you?! You really smell like shit!”

I blinked at her sudden outburst. Damascus tried to hide his laugh.

Shit, after slapping me, I can tell she’s really from the Mafia. Damn her slap feels like I’ve been punched by three men.

I lowered my head and smiled. “Thanks Marge. I’m sorry for worrying you all.” I stood up and nodded.

Marge and Damascus watched me as I walked to Matthias.

I pulled him towards me and glared. “You bastard!! It’s your fault I look like this! JUST WAKE UP ALREADY AND FUCK ME!!! I’M SO FREAKING HORNY AND I WANT YOU NOW MATTHIAS!!! SO PLEASE WAKE UP!!!”

“I wasn’t expecting that.”

“Yeah me too.”

“Damn you’re too cool, Earl.”

I groaned and shifted on the bed, trying to find that comfortable spot so I can sleep. I closed my eyes and hugged the pillow beside me.

Hours passed and it seems like I fell asleep. I was woken up by the sound of the toilet being flushed. I forced my eyes to open and when I did, I saw the whole room was dark.

“Mhmm…” I feel so sleepy but I tried to get up. I glanced over at Matthias’ bed and saw that it was empty.

I suddenly felt my heart skipped a beat.

I suddenly stood up but wobbled when I tried to run to the bathroom. I knocked down a couple of chairs but I ignored the pain of banging my knees on them.

Matthias is finally –

The door opened and I opened my mouth wide when I saw Matthias stepping out. He was rubbing his hair in a lazy manner and when he saw me, he blinked.

My worries, my anxiety and my exhaustion suddenly disappeared as I pull Matthias for a tight hug.

I dug my face on his chest and inhaled his scent. This wasn’t a dream, this was real. I can feel how warm he was. He’s alive, Matthias’ alive!

“You really missed me that much?” He teased as he wrapped his arms around me.

“O-of course…of c-course…” I sniffed and hugged him much tighter. “I missed you so much. You don’t know how much I missed you Matthias.”

Matthias buried his nose on my hair and suddenly grimaced. “Jesus Earl, you reek.”

I pulled away from him and blinked. “W-what?”

He covered his nose and made a face. “You fucking stink you idiot.”

I flushed and suddenly backed away from him. I held my hair and forced a laugh. “Ah sorry, I haven’t taken a bath yet…” I glanced on his arm and my eyes widened when I saw blood was dripping down. “Wait, you took off all the injections on you?!”

He rolled his eyes and growled. “Fuck, I can’t pee with those in my arm.”

I stared at him and laughed out loud.

“MATTHIAS!!!” Marge suddenly ran towards her brother and hugged him. “I can’t believe you’re still alive!!”

Matthias pushed her away. “Calm down woman, you’re killing me already!”

Damascus walked inside the room and smiled. “I’m glad that he’s up now.”

“Yeah, the doctors said he can leave the hospital tomorrow.” I answered and Matthias groaned.

“I can leave now. I don’t want to stay in this shithole.” He complained and Damascus glared at him.

“Your wounds are still fresh and fractured your ribs.” He informed making Matthias growl even more.

“You have to listen to the doctor, Matthias.” I said and he pursed his lips and sighed.

“Fine, whatever.”

Damascus looked at me and smirked. I shrugged my shoulders.

Marcus entered the room. He was wearing a black coat and his hands were covered with black leather gloves. He looked at Matthias and smirked.

“I thought you’re dead.”

Matthias sneered. “You wish. I won’t die until I kill you, old man.”

Marge pouted and pinched Matthias’ cheeks. “Don’t talk to your father like that, brat.”

“Let go you ugly woman!”

“What did you just call me?!”

“I wanna ask you something.” I looked at Matthias and he was staring at his father with a serious face. “What happened after the explosion at Nicholas’ place?”

Marcus waited a moment after answering. “We cleared out his mansion and everyone was dead.”

“I see. So he’s dead.” Matthias mumbled.

“Well, he better be. Or else I’ll kill him.” Marcus whispered and I looked at him. Matthias didn’t seem to hear what he said.

Dawn came and Matthias’ family decided to go home (making him happy actually).

I sat down on the edge of his bed. “How’re you feeling?”

Matthias ruffled his hair. “There’s something on my head. Like a bump or something, can you see?” He asked.

I leaned towards his head and looked. “Huh? There’s – ”

I flushed in embarrassment when Matthias suddenly kissed my neck. I tried to pull away but he held my arms and made me stay on top of him.

He nuzzled his nose on the side of my neck and inhaled. “Fuck, your scent is making me dizzy.”

I looked away. “T-that’s because I already took a bath ah!” I moaned when he suddenly bit my neck. He licked and sucked my skin before gently kissing it again.

“You know what, I heard you scream back there.” His voice was deep and I can’t help but to think how much missed his voice.

“Scream?” Was he talking about the time where we jumped out of the window?

“You said you were horny right?”

I jumped away from him and covered my mouth with the back of my hand. “W-what?!”

Matthias only smirked. “I don’t know how but I heard it. I can hear your voice even though I can’t feel anything.”

I stared at his him. There was a smile pasted on his face. “I’ve been through a lot of shits in my life. I’ve done a lot of horrible things to people. I thought back there that I was finally paying for all the shits I’ve done. I was ready to accept it but – ”

He looked at me and tilted his head to smile. My heart skipped a beat and it’s as if time stopped around us.

“ – you were there. You didn’t give me up. You could just easily go away and forget me. Live a peaceful life, find someone that can make you more happy, have a family…but you didn’t. You didn’t leave me.”

My hands were trembling when Matthias lifted up his hand to cover his eyes. His shoulders were shivering and I know he’s already crying.

“I don’t think I can live without you, Earl.” His voice was so deep and I can feel how much he meant those words.

I held his hand and it was so cold. “Matthias.” I slowly kissed the back of his hand and smiled.

“I’m not leaving. Whatever happens, I’m not gonna leave you. I’m not planning to leave you, Matthias. I don’t care if you’re the boss of the Mafia. I love you, Matthias. Ever since that day we met.”

He finally looked up to me and I blushed when I saw how cute he was even though he was crying. “You remember?”

“Yeah, I remember it now. You’re that kid who stayed with me when my mother died. No one stayed behind but you. You were always there for me Matthias.” I laughed a little while I wiped my tears.

“I love you so much Matthias. I love you. I love you so much.”
