Chapter Eight

“Oh wait, watch this scene.” I said pointing at the screen to make Matthias aware.

“I’m not going anywhere.” Matthias complained but I shushed him off.

I watched closely as Jamie from the ‘A walk to remember’ finally said my most favourite line.

“You know, I was getting alone with everything fine. I accepted it, and they you happened! I do not need a reason to be angry with God.”

I bit the tears forming in my eyes and clutched Matthias’ hand.

“Don’t tell me you’re crying over this chick flick.” Matthias teased and I glared at him.

“So what? I love ‘A walk to remember’, so deal with it.” I retorted and he just rolled his eyes.

We continued to watch. Well more likely, I continued to watch while Matthias just sits beside me, idly poking his phone or randomly touching my hand or putting his arm around my shoulder.

“Hey.” I called his attention and he looked at me. “Thanks for giving me the day to rest.”

Matthias snorted. “It’s one of the privileges of being the CEO.”

“Abusing your power’s not nice.” I said and he just snorted.

“Yeah, say that when you become the CEO of your company.”

I pouted at him and returned on watching the movie.

An hour or so, we finally finished the wonderful movie. Matthias complained that he was getting hungry so I figured that maybe I could cook our lunch.

I put the wool jacket hanging on the sofa and looked at Matthias who was texting someone. “I’m just gonna buy some ingredients. I’ll be back.”

Matthias ignored me and I just rolled my eyes. The person he might be texting seems to be important so I didn’t bother him anymore. I put my wallet on my back pocket and closed the door of his house. I walked to the elevator and patiently waited for the lift to arrive.

The elevator door opened and I froze when I saw the same girl Matthias was talking to back when we were still dealing with the company.

She looked at me for a second and that gave me the time to observe her since I didn’t really paid any attention to her back at Matthias office that day. She was indeed and obviously stunning. Her long light brunette hair falls lazily on her back. She’s of course Italian just by looking at her face. Her eyes were brown, her cheeks were pink and her lips were luscious.

The lady smiled at me before stepping out of the elevator. I followed her with my eyes. Don’t tell me he’s here to visit Matthias!

Of course she’s here to visit Matthias, you dummy.

I quickly retreated against the elevator and followed her from a distance. Indeed, she stopped right in front of Matthias’ door. What surprised me was that this woman apparently knows the password to his door as well.

That damn Matthias.

I pouted and watched her enter his house. I ran silently and pressed my ears on the door.

I stopped when I finally realized that I won’t hear anything they’re saying because the damn door was thick.

I sighed and shook my head. I have to trust Matthias. Okay fine, I know that they kissed and they probably have a secret relationship I’m not aware of. But still, I want to trust him.

Because I’m dating Matthias now.

And he won’t probably do anything to hurt me again.

I bit my lips and left the condominium to buy our food.

An hour of doing the grocery, I finally returned to Matthias’ house. Maybe the woman left already? I opened his door with the password which was my birthday (I blush every time I thought of it) and pushed it open.

I blinked when I noticed how silent it was. What? Was Matthias sleeping? Did he got tired of waiting for me?

I looked at the wall clock and cursed when I realized that it was already 1:30 pm.

I hurried to the kitchen and quickly took out the ingredients I bought. I was about to turn the stove on to boil the water on the pot when I suddenly heard a sound coming from Matthias’ room.

My heart suddenly started to beat faster when I knew what was going on.

Shit. Shit. Shit.

I walked to Matthias’ room and stopped when I heard breathing sounds inside.

“I told you already. I’m not into that, Bella.”

It was Matthias’ voice. Oh shit. They’re really doing it!

“You’ve got no choice, Matty. Quello che dovete fare è. [You have to do it.]”

“Non voglio fare di nuovo gli stessi errori. Fermarlo prima che ti uccida.[I won’t do the same mistakes again. Stop it before I kill you.]”

Well shit.

I finally opened the door and gasped when I saw the two of them in front of the window. What caught my attention was the Sniper Rifle the woman was holding.

“W-what? What’re you doing?” I asked and Matthias just rolled his eyes.

“I’m telling you Bella, I’m not doing it. Go tell that stupid Don Martin that I’m not interested anymore. Just let someone else do the job.” Matthias brushed the woman, whose name was apparently Bella away and walked towards me.

I saw Bella glared at Matthias’ back but when she saw me looking at her, she changed her expression into an elegant smile.

“Well, that’s too bad then.” She said in her Italian accent and smiled. “I should leave now. The Commission will probably look for me.”

“Yeah, tell them to fuck off.” Matthias snapped and Bella laughed.

“Alright, I’m gonna go tell them that but they might kill you.” Bella fixed the Sniper Rifle and returned it to the huge box beside her. She picked it up with ease and looked at me.

“I’ll see you later then. Ciao.” Bella smirked and walked out of the room with the gun leaving me and Matthias alone again.

I stared at the door and glanced at Matthias who was over the kitchen making himself a drink. I walked up to him and stood behind him.

“Who was that?” I asked and he shrugged his shoulders. He took out a can of beer and opened it in a snap before gulping it down.

I waited for him to finish his booze and after he did, he finally looked at me. “Bella. She’s one of the contractors who are working for the Sicilian Mafia.”

I gulped. Sicilian Mafia? They’re the one who’s in charge in the whole underground business here in Italy, right? I heard that once from dad and I know I shouldn’t be surprise to know that Matthias have connections with them.

“So…why’s she here?” I asked again and Matthias threw the empty can on the bin before sitting down on the stool.

“She wants me to kill someone.”

I felt suddenly cold at what he said.

“But…you quit right?”

Matthias smirked. “They don’t consider my retirement.” He whispered in a sullen voice.

I blinked at what he said. “What?”

“Nothing.” He pouted and raised his brows at me. “I’m starving. When are you gonna cook?”

I gasped when I remembered that I was about to cook our lunch.

“Shit, I forgot about that!” I hopped towards the stove. Good thing I turned it off when I was uh – eavesdropping.

I can feel Matthias silently watching me from behind while I cook our food.

I chopped the onions, the garlic, the vegetables and meat before putting it into the wok. I stirred it while my mind was busy thinking about Bella, the Mafia and Matthias.

Matthias really did quit being an assassin, right? But…can you really stop that kind of work. In the world of Mafia, once you stopped doing something, that means they’ll either kill you for quitting the family or you can escape by going in to another country to hide.

But either of that doesn’t work for Matthias.

Did he really stop?

I bit my lips.

Will they haunt Matthias to force him again to kill?

But that woman, Bella, didn’t right?

I gasped when a hand pulled me away from the stove. “What?!”

“Are you planning on frying your hand, hm?” Matthias asked while holding my hand safely away from the blazing fire. I blushed in embarrassment and gently took my hand away from him.

“Sorry. I was just thinking.” I turned the stove off and transferred the stir-fry on the wok to the large bowl waiting right at the counter. I carried it to the dining table along with the plates, spoon and fork.

Matthias sat on the other side of the table and looked at the food in front of him. I started and eating and so does him.

We ate in silence, never talking to each other. Not saying a word. Just the noises of the utensils and nothing more.

I looked up to Matthias who was eating his food nonchalantly. I fisted my hand. “Matthias.”

It took him seconds to realize that I called him. “What?”

“Are you okay?”

He snorted and smirked. “Yeah. Of course I am.”

“You’re not thinking of that again.” I asked. Matthias looked uncertain before forcing an amused smile. He perfectly knows what I’m talking about.

He’s not going to leave me again just because of this issue again.

He shook his head and leaned back on his chair. “I won’t do that again. Not ever.”

I felt relief washed through my body.

“Because I’m gonna protect you.” He looked straight into my eyes. “And if I have to kill someone again, I’ll do it.”

I gulped. His voice drips of danger and anyone who’s hearing it knows that he’s serious.

I smiled. “I’m sure you won’t do it again. I’m fine, Matthias.”

He smirked. “That’s a little ironic since you got kidnapped and raped just a few days ago.” He teased and I blushed.

“Don’t remind me that again!”

Matthias face turned sour. “Sorry.”

“Let’s just eat.” I said to finish our conversation.

After we finished our lunch, I insisted on going back to my apartment again since I can’t stay here at Matthias’. He was reluctant at first but finally agreed when I said that I’m going to slap him if he won’t stop making a fuss about this.

He wanted to drop me off by I told him that I’ll just take the cab. I don’t want to trouble him anymore coz he had already done so many things for me.

I called a taxi, went to my apartment and finally threw down myself on the cheap sofa I really liked. All the glamorous things in Matthias’ house weren’t my thing. Sure, they’re nice and very comfortable but for me, I still love the simple lifestyle I had when I was still in high school.

Come to think of it. It’s been four months since I last came here in Italy. Another two months and the company will let me go back home in New York.

Now that I think about it, I haven’t really had the time to explore Italy. It’s a rare opportunity for someone like me to go to a magnificent country like this. I’ll ask Matthias and Liza to go out sometime and tour the place.

There was a knock on the door and I quickly opened it. Liza was in front of me with a plastic bag on her hand and a purse. She smiled at me and gave me a hug.

“I’m so glad you’re finally alright!” I let her enter and she dropped the bag of food on the table. “I came here as soon as work finished.”

I grinned. “Really? Did you take care of my work as well?”

Liza gave me a playful glare. “Seriously? You want me to do your work? I don’t think I can handle that job.”

I laughed and she did as well. “So, how are things between you and Matthias?”

I smiled at her. “It’s incredible.”

“So – you wanted to bring me here at the amusement park?” Matthias asked and I nodded. We both stared at the huge rides right in front of us.

It’s the first time I actually went to the amusement park. I never played when I was just a kid because I’m too busy being a nerd and doing someone’s assignments or projects. Besides, I don’t have a friend that time.

“Fine.” Matthias sounded irritated but he let it go. We went to the ticket booth to buy our tickets inside. I told him that I’ll pay for it but he just slapped my hands away when I was about to give the money to the lady. He pulled the tickets and gave it to me before entering the park.

“Fuck, this is so – childish.” Matthias mumbled while we walked around the park. Everyone was having fun, eating cotton candies and running around with their friends or families, it feels so lively.

“What should we ride first?” I asked myself while scanning the whole area. There was a carousel, a mini roller coaster designed as a caterpillar, swan lake, arcade house and of course the big Ferris wheel. There was a lot more but that’s the only things my eyes can see.

I pulled Matthias towards the carousel and he just grunted. “Don’t tell me we’re going to ride that? Because I’m gonna kill someone if you do.” Matthias taunted and I just rolled my eyes at him. What a kill joy.

“No, we’re not gonna ride that.” Since you might hurt me when I made you. I fished out the iPhone from his pocket and pressed the camera. “Here, let’s take a picture!”

“Shit, no fucking way.” He said before walking away from him. I pulled his sleeves to make him come back to my side. “Stop being such a grumpy cat and have fun, Matthias.” I said and I grinned at him to make him feel that I really wanted to be here.

Because by doing this, I can slowly erase what happened the past few days with Tom. I just want to spend my free time together with Matthias as much as I can before the company send me back to New York.

He sighed and cursed before standing beside me and looking at his phone. I pulled it up and we posed right in front of it. When I finished taking the picture, we look at it. Matthias snorted and started walking away. I pouted when I saw the result.

Matthias looks perfectly handsome. The sun was reflecting his brunette hair and his chocolate colored eyes while I look like some sort of a hobo or something. My hair was messed up, my cheeks were obviously twitchy and my lips were crooked.

I have to admit it – I’m not a photogenic person.

I sighed and returned the phone to Matthias. I walked back beside him. Our first photo and I looked like a doofus.

Matthias stopped walking and in an instant, I heard the camera click in front of me. I blinked at him and realized that he took a stolen shot of my face. I puffed my cheeks in anger and tried to get the phone from him to delete the picture but he just held it high so I wouldn’t reach it.

“Delete it!” I demanded but he just smirked at me. We fought for a moment and for once, we acted like what we used to be when were in high school.

Back when everything was still fine.

Back when we were both so in love with each other.

Everyone was looking at us because we were making a scene but we both ignored them. Suddenly, Matthias stopped moving and leaned down to kiss me on the lips. I froze and stared at him before he pulled out an evil smirk.

“That’s what you get for wanting a photo with me.” He said before putting his phone back to his pocket.

“Whatever.” It’s not that I’m angry or something. I just don’t want Matthias to see my ugly side anymore. I won’t risk anything – I don’t want to lose him again.

After touring the amusement park for almost the whole day, I decided to ride the Ferris wheel before we go home. Surprisingly, Matthias agreed to ride it with me. He was so reluctant to ride anything and it’s the first time that he agreed so easily.

When we were inside the passenger car, Matthias sat the opposite side of me. The cart started to move slowly up the air and I marvelled when I saw how beautiful Venice was at night.

“So beautiful.” I muttered while leaning towards the windows. The city lights were twinkling and I can hear the silent howl of the wind. It was cold and scary because we’re so high up but with Matthias here with me, everything feels so perfect.

I looked at Matthias and smiled. “Thanks for coming here with me.”

Matthias snorted and just crossed his legs. “Whatever.”

I just grinned and returned to watching the buildings slowly becomes small as we rose high up in the air.

I stopped and looked at Matthias who was looking at me.

“I’m sorry for everything that happened.” His eyes flashed guilt on them and I saw his hands shaking. He covered his face with his hands and lowered his head. “Everything that happened to you – it’s all my fault. If I didn’t…” He paused and shook his head. “…if I only came sooner, this wouldn’t have happened.”

I stared at him with wide eyes. All this time, he was still blaming himself to what happened to me.

Never did it occur to me that it was Matthias’ fault.

All those times I spent inside that dungeon, all I can think was ‘When will Matthias save me?’”

“I’m sorry Earl, I’m so sorry.” He looked at with a vulnerable expression. He’s like a child he lost something important. Seeing the tough Matthias like this makes me feel that he really does love me.

I sat beside him and held his hand. “Matthias, it’s okay now. I’m not blaming you. I’m not blaming anyone.” I kissed his hand and he stared at me. “I love you.”

Matthias smiled a little. “Really?”

I nodded.

“Prove it.” His face turned into his usual bad boy expression and I just pouted at him.

“Prove what?”

“That you love me.”

“No way.”

“I won’t believe it until you do.”

I glared at me and he just smirked. I gave up and leaned forward him to kiss him. He hugged me closer and now that I’m practically sitting on his lap made me deepen the kiss even more. Our tongues tangled with each other and our moans resonated through the small cart of the Ferris wheel.

At that time, everything stopped.

And it feels so perfect being Matthias’ lover.

Later that night, I got a text message from Matthias.

I can’t sleep. I wonder why.

I laughed at little and typed as soon as I finished reading his message.

Stop thinking about me and maybe you will.

Getting a little cocky now ha? I like that.

What’re you thinking?

A lot of stuffs.

What kind of stuffs.

Pervy stuffs.

It’s nothing. I just miss you.

I blushed at what he said and hugged the pillow close to me.

Yeah. Me too.

If something happened to me, promise me you won’t cry.

I paled at what he said and quickly got up from the bed.

What do you mean?

Nothing. I’m going to sleep now.

I’ll see you tomorrow.

I didn’t sleep after that.
