Since the world fell to pieces about thirty years ago, and the world ran out of resources for the public, there's been a whole lot of changes. One: Old countries died, and new ones were formed. Two: My country, the new United States of America made seven schools to train orphans for war. Three: We are all constantly at war. Four: (Although, it is not directly concerning the world. It affected mine.) I was losing mine and Annabeth's game, I had two kills, and she had three.
More on that later, but for now, let me tell you about the immensely fucked (and somewhat beautiful) up world we lived in. First of all, we now had only half the population we had forty years ago, though now it is slowly going back up. The new USA made seven world famous schools of war, me and my beloved Annabeth were in the best one, Hell's Gate High School. Why the fuck would they make a high school designed for war? Well, I don't fucking know or give a shit. All I know is that I was fed, dangerous and with the love of my life.
There were 12 battalions in each school, each school making one brigade. Hell Brigade, Alpha Brigade, Dragon Brigade, Edison Brigade, you get the idea. Each battalion was assigned to a dorm building, each floor making a company. Each company had 4 squads, each had 4 battle buddies of 2. So, there were 8 to a squad, 32 to a company and 160 to a battalion, and 1,920 to a brigade. Annabeth and I were part of Charlie battalion, Echo company, first squad.
I was the squad leader, so I was responsible not only for myself and Annabeth but also for four other people. I was part of the only Assassin squad in the whole battalion, there was 1 in each. We are the elite of the elite, we had to be a jack of all trades, but our main specialty was getting in, killing the target, and getting out, all without leaving a trace. We were the most feared, the most respected, though I didn't care too much about it. As long as I could be with Anna, she was the fire to my ice; whatever I didn't have, she had, whatever she didn't have, I had. We were a team, a well-oiled war machine.
I was from Los Angeles, she was from Alaska. We came into Hell's Gate at the same time, so we saw each other during orientation. We wouldn't be paired together until the skills test; it wasn't usual for a guy and a girl to be paired together, but it wasn't out of the question. We became close quickly like we were meant to meet each other. Over time I fell deeply in love with her, at first refusing to. Then I opened myself to my feelings, but I haven't yet said anything to her.
She's had some dating experience with the other guys in the battalion, but she always dumped them. We were so close half the time we didn't bother with actual clothes, just leaving the bare minimum. After I fell for her it was harder to keep myself in check, but that was the hormones. I would never hurt her; I would walk into a hail of bullets for her, I would let them torture me for eternity for her. I knew she would too, but I would never let that happen.
Back to the competition, we were in the simulations building, where a company of sweaty sixteen-year old's suited up for a fight and tried to "kill" the enemy squads with paintball guns designed to knock you out with pain, but not kill you. It was my assassin squad and a combat squad against two other combat squad. Needless to say, we were winning. Anna scoffed as I stole her kill, whispering, "Nick, you better not fucking do that again or I'm gonna shoot you." I laughed and danced away as she shot at my foot, splattering the tip of my boot with red paint. The pistol made no sound, as it had been modded with a total sound elimination suppressor, and a soft laser, enough for us to see, and enough for the enemy to not.
Our heads snapped up as he heard two other voices, who we quickly identified as Nicole and Frank (they were on the enemy team) whisper down the corridor. It was total dark, everyone was using NOD's that made everything look normal. At first, when they were created back in the 2000's they had a green hue to everything. But scientists recently found out how to make the vision normal, as to not fuck with people's eyesight. I nodded to Anna, and she nodded back, we aimed down the corridor and advanced, our movements as silent as a wolf.
Frank and Nicole stuck their head out to throw a flash bang and cover fire, respectively. They were shot in the face instead, hitting their masks so it jarred them. They fell, Anna shot them in the chest, not wanting to risk hitting the heart. They were eliminated, and we advanced, exchanging jokes and remarks. We soon made their way around the back of the enemy, we walked through the corridors, almost jogging. We were racing each other to see who could make the most kills.
We panted as we made our way to our room, and once inside we stripped off and showered, Anna taking the first shower. She came out wearing short shorts and a thin tank top, which I tried not to stare at. She went into her room to toss the sweaty clothes into her laundry basket and yelled from in the kitchen, "What do you want, Nick. And woo hoo, last day of this week! Anything you wanna do this weekend?" I stripped off and turned on the water, I yelled back," Can I have a salad?" "No!" She yelled back, I smiled, she always said that. By now it was purely out of habit.
I used the soap, shampoo, and conditioner, and got out. I was dripping wet when Anna came into the bathroom, I quickly covered up as I blushed. She smiled and blushed a little too, "I just wanted to say we're out of lettuce." I sighed, "And you couldn't tell me that from outside of the bathroom?" She pouted jokingly, "A girl's gotta have some fun." She left, leaving me alone.
I quickly dried off and dressed in shorts and a t-shirt, throwing my dirty clothes in my laundry I went to the kitchen. I squeezed Anna's shoulder to make her aware of my presence and she twisted her head to meet my gaze and smiled. My heart beat quickened, and I stepped away, opening the fridge. It was painfully empty, as my stomach rumbled, "Who the fuck ate all my pizza?" I glanced at Anna, who looked up bashfully, "Was it you?" I asked, she shook her head, "No, but Nicole did." I grunted and gave her another pointed look, "OK, maybe I did too."
I nodded, "You wanna come with me?" I asked, she shook her head, "No, I promised Clara I would teach her how to cook a steak." I nodded sagely, "Ah yes, the patented Anna steak. The meat of all things holy." She giggled, making me smile."OK, I'll ask Glenn and Mason to come with me." She smiled again, "Sound's like a plan."And hugged me. I left, going to the room across the hall, knocking on the door and bursting in, "Sup, BITCHES." I heard muffled responses as my two best buddies other than Anna rushed to come to try to beat me up. Their names were Mason and Glenn, the two retards.
I clotheslined them as they came out of their rooms, making them fall to the floor in laughter. I helped them up, telling them what I wanted to do, they agreed and we ran to catch the bus to the mall, which was a mile away. We just barely caught it, panting slightly from the exertion. I saw Nicole and Frank on the bus, laughing silently together, I walked up to them."You guys really don't need to yell when you're fighting."They looked up, a smile spreading over their faces, "So it was you and Beth?" I nodded, they clapped my back, "Good job, dude. Other than knocking us out and all." I sat down next to them, Mason and Glenn taking a seat beside me.
We talked until our stop, where we got off. They were headed to the pools, to de-stress, it was sort of their tradition to do it after a long week."See ya tonight!" I yelled as the bus closed its doors. The bus sped off and we walked inside the mall, heading straight for the grocery store. We went first to the produce, then to the meat section, where I picked up some steaks (They're a godsend if you ask me. Though I don't believe in god.)
Then we picked up some dairy and bread. We left with large grocery bags each, I looked down as my wrist pad started to ring, it was Anna, I told the pad to let the call through."Nick, for fuck sake." I widened my eyes, Anna never cussed unless she was really angry, scared or both. " Clara and I had an accident and now there's smoke everywhere, could you pick up cleaning supplies?" I shook my head, "No, sorry. We have our hands full. Ask Clara's roommate, Mary."
Anna sighed and said, "Ok, we'll do that, but put your groceries in the boy's room." I nodded again,"Ok, see you soon." She huffed and hung up. I looked at Mason,"It's alright dude, you can put the stuff there for now." I thanked them as we waited for the bus, soon, one came, and we soon arrived at the dorm. We took the elevator up and dropped off the food in their room, and I now stood in front of my room door. I sucked in a breath and opened the door, immediately a cloud of smoke bellowed out of the door, burning my eyes.
Anna came out of smoke and hugged me quickly, I looked around and she released me, "Ok, well, we were cooking. And Clara accidentally thought one of our poisons was a spice." I laughed, it had happened quite a few times before, and we still never thought of where to move them. She crossed her arms, looking cross, "Its not a laughing matter, she's passed out on the floor right now." I nodded and went to my bedroom to go to sleep.
I was tired, and the smoke problem wasn't my problem, as I had already sealed off my bedroom from gassing long before. I looked at my wrist pad, scrolling through the news feed, and watching videos. WiFi was a new thing, only appearing in the new US two years ago. We really were doing well, even after all the shit went down. There wasn't really anything on the news, there hadn't been for almost twenty years after the new government system was put into place years ago. Instead of three bodies of government, there was two, the judicial, and the council.
Everyone who went into the government had to take a rigorous test their integrity, and if they would actually do things in the government. It was a top-secret test, no one knew what was in it. There had been no corruption, new healthcare systems were put into place, new environmental laws were put into place. In general, everything had gotten better, because we refused to let the disaster that happened thirty years ago happen again. We really got our shit together. But across the border, in the old US, it was a shit hole.
Poverty was at it's highest, the government was run by corporations only interested in money. The president was a fucking idiot, who literally did not know what he was doing, and had almost completely destroyed their environment. We had tried negotiating with them, trying to at least save the environment, but we were too late. The border area's looked like a WW2 battlefield, the pollution was so bad, but once you got a hundred miles into our territory, it became lush lands. Most of the land we had become natural preserves, and we made innovations that bettered our standard of living and made it so that the cities became less polluted, less cramped, and sustainable in the long run. We only had about 200 million people in our country, aside from the millions of tourists.
The tourist laws were strict, absolutely no vehicles inside park lines, and leaving any sort of non biodegradable trash got you a fine of $1,000. We were very protective of our national parks, we had minimized mining, with the help of innovations that allowed our mining footprint to decrease, while being able to mine longer in a area. Our military was top notch, but our main focus was the ecosystem and standard of living. We spent less than half of what the old US spent on the military, but that was also a little because we had appropriated tech from wherever we found it. You would be surprised at what we found in our expansion, it was enough to last up a couple hundred years.
My thoughts were cut off as I fell soundly asleep, right before Anna stepped into my bedroom, already undressed.
