Chapter Five

Two weeks later and I was searching for a job, which was difficult in itself without the worry of the upcoming fight with King.

My brothers were letting my ribs heal and they were nearly back to full health, but they wanted to give me a few extra days at least until I started training again.

Uncle Benji had gone so quiet lately and I couldn’t help but wonder why.

“Uncle! You here?” I shout as I walk through the front door after yet another failed day of finding a job.

Silence…

“Uncle?!” I shouted again looking from room to room.

I searched the whole house but couldn’t find him anywhere, he should be here!

I decided to ring my eldest brother.

“Hey Toby, have you seen Benji?” I asked quickly before he got a word in.

“No, not today. Why?” He asks.

“He’s not home and I haven’t seen him in a few days” I walk around the house looking for something to show me where he might have gone.

“I’ll ring the boys and see if anyone’s seen him. But Kat, I’m sure he’s just fine” Toby tries to reassure me, but it doesn’t work. Something didn’t feel right.

It was another hour before I heard anything, I was searching the internet for jobs as I tried to distract myself as I found an assistant job in a local book publishing office. I filled out the forms with delight as I enjoyed books so much.

Kingsley Industries Book Publishing was a well-known enterprise in town, it sold millions of books every year and this chance was amazing, if I even got an interview…

My phone began to ring as I finished the forms and sent in my application with a smile.

“Kat? It’s Travis. We found Benji…” He says but I hear the unease in his voice.

“Where is he? Is he ok?” I ask quickly.

“You might want to come to the hospital…” Travis says as my heart stops in my chest.

“I’m on my way” I say and hang up as I fumble with my phone and keys as I take my motorbike, not even thinking about putting on my leathers.

I rush to the hospital in record time as Travis is stood outside waiting for me as he crosses his arms in anger.

“What the fuck Katrina?! Where are your leathers? There is no way you didn’t speed! What were you thinking?!” He shouts at me.

“I’m sorry…I didn’t think…Benji…” I stammer as his body freezes and sags.

“He’s…he’s this way” He says as he guides me down the corridors.

Oncology…That’s where we stopped.

“No…” I murmur shaking my head as Travis takes my hand in his.

“He didn’t tell me…Kat, I’m sorry, it doesn’t look good…” Travis wipes the tear from my eyes as we enter a small room off to the side as I see my uncle pale in a bed, hooked up to machines and IV bags.

“Uncle Benji…” I cry as I get to his side.

“Kat…I’m sorry” Benji cries as I take his hand sitting next to him as I put my head resting up against him.

“You can’t leave us. Please Uncle Benji” I sob.

“I’m sorry baby girl. I tried, I tried to fight it…But…The cancer was too strong…I’m so, so sorry” He cries.

“I can’t do this without you” I murmur.

“You can and you will. I will watch over you with your parents and you will be the strongest girl you’ve ever been. You’re brave Katrina, braver than any girl I have ever known. You’ve done so well. I’m so proud of you” He says as it makes me sob harder.

“I love you Uncle Benji” I sob as I lay next to him in the bed and curl up beside him like I always did when I was younger, his arms wrapping around me.

“I love you too Kat. Be good for your brothers, they love you too” He says as I nod and continue to lay with him as he falls asleep.

“Where is he?!” My brothers burst into the room as Benji’s monitor makes its final long beep as my uncle drifts off in his sleep as I sob in his cold arms.

“No” I cry harder as I hold on to him, not wanting to let go of my uncle.

“Kat come on the nurses need to deal with him” Travis tries to take me off of my uncle.

“No!” I scream as he drags me away.

“Katrina! Calm down!” I’m in Nathan’s arms now as I hit against his hard chest, sobbing angrily.

“He can’t leave me!” I cry.

“Take her out of here” Toby sighs.

“Goodbye Uncle” Nathan nods at our uncle before dragging me out of the room.

“Get off of me!” I cry and hit Nathan on the chest hard as he lets go with a breath as I run as fast as I can out of the hospital, grabbing my bike and riding with no direction.

How could my Uncle have hidden something so huge as cancer!? He was gone, just like our parents.

Without realising I had driven to the warehouse, it was busy, fights happened most nights.

I got off my bike and headed inside, for once I was in my normal clothes as I went inside, red-eyed to the place that I had always let off steam.

“Everything ok there, sweetheart?” Jay said from the bar, his eyes looking into mine as he’d seen the hurt in my face.

“Not really” I shake my head.

“What’s up? You look a right mess right now” Jay says placing a shot down in front of me.

“I don’t have any money Jay” I sigh as he looks at me in shock.

“How do you know who I am?” He asks as I swear under my breath.

I turn on my phone and show the only family photo I had on my phone of me, the boys, our parents and my uncle as he stares at it in shock.

“Who are you?” He asks.

I flip to another photo, one I had taken of me and Lucy before the fight, all dressed up.

“Recognise me now?” I ask showing him as his jaw drops.

“Payton! I’m going on break!” He shouts to the other bartender as she nods and he jumps over the bar, takes my hand and leads me to the office.

“Smoke…” He says as he shuts the door.

“Yeah…It’s me” I sigh as a tear falls from my face.

“How? What? Wait, why are you crying?” He says taking my face in his hand.

“Benji…My uncle…He’s dead…” I cry

“Oh shit, Smoke, I’m sorry baby” He says as he hugs me tight to his chest as I just sob harder.

The door bursts open and I see my brother Nathan storm in angrily as his chest is puffed out in anger.

“What the fuck were you thinking?!” He shouts at me.

“Fuck off Nathan” I sigh and sit on the desk as Jay looks between us.

“You aren’t even dressed up tonight! What was you going to do? Go for a fight? Now Jay knows who you are too! This gossip will be all over town!” Nathan glares at Jay.

“I’m not going to tell anyone! I’d do anything for Smoke, and you know it dude!” Jay growls.

“Kat…” I mumble.

“What?” Jay raises a brow in question.

“My name…It’s Kat, Katrina” I say as he smiles.

“Suits you” He smiles.

“Kat! What the fuck?!” Nathan shouts storming up to me.

“What the fuck are you going to do Nathan?! No one else will know! I barely tell anyone. No one else will find out. Even if they did who the fuck cares! You’re all known for being yourselves here, so why can’t I?” I snap.

“Because we want you safe!” Nathan snaps back.

“Then maybe you shouldn’t have abandoned me when our parents died” I say as I see the hurt in his eyes.

“We had no choice…”

“There’s always a choice Nathan” I sigh.

“Jay get out, I need to talk to my sister, alone” Nathan growls.

“Ok. I’ll be outside if you need me Smoke…Uhh Kat.” Jay nods and kisses my forehead quickly and leaves.

“He likes you too much”

“I know. But, he knows his boundaries” I say as Nathan takes my hand in his.

“I…We knew about Benji’s cancer…Mum had it too, before she died in the accident…” Nathan said as I looked at him in shock.

“You all knew! That’s where they were going that night wasn’t it…To the hospital…” I paced the room yanking my hand from my brothers.

“Kat, they loved you and didn’t want you to suffer, they wanted to spend time with you without you worrying about them every five minutes, so no one told you. Our parents were on their way to the hospital that night, but Dad left a note behind…It wasn’t an accident Kat…He killed both of them on impact…It was suicide. Dad didn’t want to be without Mum. He left us a note saying how sorry he was and that we should live our lives the best ways we could. The ring was split between us three boys and you should have nothing to do with the ring. You were to stay home with Benji and enjoy life. He wanted his little girl to be safe and have fun. We had no choice, we had to keep you safe, so we made sure no one knew we had a sister around here. Then we heard Benji being sick one night and I knew it was happening again…” Nathan says as I just stare in shock.

“You’re lying…Dad wouldn’t kill himself” I shake my head in denial.

“I’m so sorry Kat”

“You ALL lied to me!” I slap him across the cheek.

“We tried to protect you” He says as the first tear, I had ever seen him shed fell from his eyes.

“Family tell each other things. Family stick together. Our parents lied to me, you boys, my own brothers lied to me, my uncle lied to me! Fuck all of you. I’m done with this family. Smoke has gone solo” I say as bolt out of the office as I hear him call out to me.

“Smoke!” Jay calls following me.

“Leave me alone Jay” I shout as I hear him stop with a sigh as I get on my bike and ride off again.

I ride to Lucy’s hoping Travis wasn’t there, because he lied too but I needed my girl and that’s where she would be.

My tyres squeal against the curb as I stop, not caring about the bike as I let myself in and head straight upstairs.

“Fuck…baby” I hear Lucy moaning as I open her door.

“What the fuck…” I say as I spot Lucy having sex with some guy I’d seen before at the ring.

“Shit! Kat! Baby!” Lucy shouts, pushing the guy off of her.

“Drop dead. All of you can drop dead!” I scream as I hear her sob behind me.

“Wait, please, I didn’t mean to. I was confused!” She sobs.

“Me too, confused why my family lied to me for years about my parents death and then my uncle died today, and I find out that they lied about that too. Then I find my own girlfriend shacking up with some random weak-ass fighter! I’m done, with all of you” I cry as I walk out the house, slamming the door behind me.
