Chapter 1: The New Start

Scout Hollow

It was a new city. Was I excited? No, not one bit. I didn't like living with others. It unsettled me. The fact that someone could be watching me wherever I am in the house is what unsettled me the most. The one thing that calmed me down a bit was that it was a four bedroom apart.

I got up from my laying position and sat up. I looked at the mirror on the side of my bed and saw my hair was a mess. I sighed and got up to walk to the bathroom. I brushed my teeth and took a shower. After finishing up with getting ready, I looked in the mirror again. I was in a baggy hoodie and some ripped jeans, my hair in a bun.

"It's presentable." I shruged and looked around my small apartment. Everything was neatly placed into boxes, each box with a lable so I knew exactly what was where. I looked back in the mirror. I was a pale girl with black hair. I have heterochromia as well. My right eye was amber while my left one was hazel. I sighed and called my father, he owned a moving company.

"Hello?" He asked.

"Hey, dad." I smiled gently.

"You're finally ready, Scout?"

"Mhm, everything's packed and ready to go."

"Okay, I'll be right there with a few employees."

"Alright, see you."

"See you in a bit, princess." He hung up.

I was the only girl in my family and the youngest. My mom died giving birth to me, so my father singlehandedly raised my two older brothers and I. He found self-defense a must have for me, considering I was the only one in my family with powers. At a young age I knew how my power worked. I just have to make skin contact with someone else with powers. I have accidentally done it multiple times when I was two or three years old.

I then heard a knock on my door. I opened it and saw my father standing there.

"Are you sure about this?" He asked me, taking my hands in his.

"Yes, dad, I'm sure." I reassured him.

"But I don't know if they're, you know, like you." He removed his hands and hugged me.

"Dad, I'll be fine. Trust me."

"Fine, just no revealing clothes." He sighed and let go of me.

I nodded. "I never wore them before, why would I now?" He laughed at that statement.

"That's my girl," He messed up my hair.

"Dad!" I scolded him playfully.

"C'mon, I'm bringing you to the city." He said, practically dragging me to his car.

When we got there, I felt uneasy. My older brothers Cameron and Kyle were with us. Cameron is 25, Kyle was 23, and I was 19. They helped bring in my boxes. When we got in we went straight for my room. I wasn't very social, but I did notice the only girl looking at me with excitement.

"Thanks guys." I smiled at my family.

"Anything for the queen." Kyle said, bowing playfully.

"Do you wish for us to leave, your highness?" Cameron joined in his act.

"Yes, leave my sight or it's off with your heads!" I said, jokingly. We laughed together.

"We have to go now," Cameron said.

"We'll visit whenever we can, though." He added as he and Kyle practically dragged my father out.

I started unpacking when I heard a knock at my bedroom door. I put down my skateboard and open my door. The other girl was standing at the door.

"I'm Irene Foster!" She said and smiled. She had a sweet smile.

"Scout Hollow." I said quietly. She smiled sweetly.

"Here!" She handed me a gift.

"When I reached out to you about this apartment, you didn't respond." She added.

"So I reached out to your family," She then handed me a cupcake.

"You seemed unsettled about all of this, so I hope these comfort you." She waved and left to her room.

I looked at the gift and the cupcake in my hands. I smiled faintly at the fact that had at least one nice roomate. I closed my door and put the stuff Irene gave me on my nightstand. I started to sing as I continued to unpack.

Within an hour, I was done. I looked at the gift, as I already finished the cupcake. I carefully opened the gift so.I could save the wrapping paper. I smiled at what I found. It was a beautiful necklace that had a shard of alexandrite on it. I put it on and looked around my room. I then heard a knock at my door. I got up and answered it.

"Wanna help me make dinner?' Irene asked.

I smiled a her and said,

"Of course."

I followed her out of my room and saw two boys in the living room. One reading a book on the recliner and the other watching a movie while eating popcorn.

"Eric, if you make a mess, I will physically fight you." Irene scolded the one on couch. He laughed.

"Jeez, fine mom." He said turning around to face her. I caught his gaze and his expression changed.

"When did she get here?" He asked, he caught the attention of the one reading. The one who was reading looked up from his book to see what Eric was talking about. He too, also looked surprised.

"She's been here for a while, you know." Irene said, clearly confused as to why the boys were confused.

"She's been so quiet though," the other boy said, putting his book face down on the recliner's armrest.

"How long has she been here?"

"An hour or so." Irene shruged. I made my way to the kitchen as the boys asked Irene questions.

I opened the cabinets to see what we had. I smiled at the ingredients.

"Do you guys want homemade pizza?" I asked them. They all looked at me. Irene looked happy, the boys partially confused.

"You can make that?" Eric asked

"Oh, yeah, my father's recipe." I said shyly.

"I'll help." Irene said, walking into the kitchen.

When we were done we served everyone.

"Wow, this is really good." Dean said.

"Thanks." I said, cleaning up my mess.

"I've been cooking and baking ever since I was little." I added.

"Can you teach me how to bake things other than cupcakes?" Irene asked. I smiled and nodded.

"Yay!" She said as she hugged me.

Once we were all done Irene went into her room and came out in a dog onesie.

"We're going to talk to each other and share any secrets we have she said while settling herself of one end of the couch.

"Is this such a good idea, Irene?" Dean asked.

"Yes, I'll go first," She responded, walking to a houseplant.

"I'm able to manipulate plants." she said as she hovered her hands over the plant, making it grow. The boys looked shocked, while I was smiling brightly. I got up and touched her arm.

"Can you do anything, Scout?" She asked.

I nodded. "Multiple."

"I can use others' powers if we make skin contact." I said.

I flicked my fingers towards Eric and shot him with water.

"Hey!" He said playfully. He made a glass of water float towards me and splashed me with it.

We spent the rest of the night messing with each other. When I went to my room, I was soaking wet. Eric really puts up a fight in a water fight. I laughed at what had just happened and changed into my pajamas. I flopped on my bed and fell asleep.
