Samantha drives steady, staring out through the window as she comes to a halt at the red light, pensive and nostalgic.
Though it's been three years since she last saw her ex boyfriend, she still was not ready for any relationship. Thus, was the reason why she was annoyed with her friend at the moment. She had tricked her into going out last weekend on a blind date, before leaving for college together; Now.the guy was blowing up her phone nonstop despite her telling him she was not interested.
The whole night had been nothing but torture for her. She had never met any guy more self absorbed then Lucas Flinch. He stared at himself through anything that had a reflection. Played with his hair every chance he got, and got mad at her when she accidentally spilled some of her drink on the tip of his shoe.
Kimberly snaps her fingers in front of Samantha, bringing her out of her pensive state.
"Hello, Sam? Come on honey, you're not still mad at me are you? Go now, you have a green light. " She pursed her lips and gives her an apologetic stare.
Sam sighs, her hands grip the steering wheel as she unhinged her foot from the brake, pulling herself up, and placing her foot down gently on the gas pedal to continue her journey to her new school.
"No, I'm not mad. It's just..." She shrugs her shoulders and leans her head down for a second, closing her eyes as she makes another stop at a red light.
"Sweetheart, you gotta get over Craig, it's been three years already for God's sake. I get it, he was the love of your life. I was just trying to get you to have some fun! Meet new people, trust me-"
"Oh god no, Kim? I'm over him, I've been over him! I just don'tthink I'm ready for another relationship right now." She nods, and looks unbelieved at her friend.
"But why? I mean, come on? You are beautiful, and smart, you have men drooling over you all the time. Yet, you are not even aware of it Sam!" Kimberly scolds her friend.
"I just.... I'm not ready to date yet, ok?I want to finish college before I can think of dating anyone. The thing is, I .... I guess I miss my parents. They are always busy with work, and their stupid social life.... you think they would of at least taken today to say goodbye to me. But here we are, arriving to college on our own. Why? Because mom has her bridge club, and dad has a full agenda full of meetings."
She sighs, a bit disappointed that she was unable to say goodbye to her parents before leaving for the school year.
"Well, forget about them Sam, you have more then proven to them that you can be strong and independent all on your own. Come on, it's a new school year, and as a new transfer student here, we have to go out and celebrate! What do you say?" Kim smiles, holding Samantha's shoulder, awaiting her response.
"Kim, I don't think that's a good idea. You know I hate to go out. I'm not good at socializing, you are more then welcome to go out and celebrate for the both of us." She squints her eyes. Kim knows Sam has never been the kind to socialize. She hates being in the spotlight, thus the reason why she always declined her mother's request to join their bridge club.
"Oh come on? You're on your third year of college! Yet you haven't gone to a single party, it's time you start loosening up, and get out there hon!"
Sam looks at her, narrowing her eyebrows. A guy pulls up with a black leather jacket and dark blue jeans. Despite wearing a helmet, Kim can't help but admire the physic of the mysterious boy riding on top of the blue yamaha motorbike. She smiles, waving flirtatiously at him. Sam rolls her eyes as the green light comes on, and he takes off before their eyes.
"Wow! Did you see that guy? He looks so damn hot!" She says fanning her face. Sam looks at her dumbfounded, and nodding her head.
"He was wearing a helmet! So how can you tell he was hot?" She squints her eyes as she pulls up to her destination. Looking over the massive structures, trying to figure where she'd have to park.
"Where are we supposed to go from here?" She asks Kim.
"Oh! Right! Go this way, you can park your car in the student spaces while we go in and register." Kim notifys her. Knowing where to go, since she took the precaution to study all the details the few nights before.
An older lady stands in front of the computer tapping away, and printing out their information for their dorms. She hands them to the girls and they take a once over at the papers.
Kimberly giggles to the fact she gets a dorm in the co-ed building like she had requested, but Samantha is not pleased at all. She was hoping to have her own dorm on the more expensive buildings like her dad had promised her.
"M'am I'm sorry, but I think there is a mistake with mine. See, I signed up for the Hamilton building, so I can have my own dorm. It says here I'm assigned to the, Northbridge Building?" She inquires. The lady looks over her glasses and takes the paper from her hand. Glancing over the paper and reviewing the date it was submitted.
"Oh honey, see... you submitted your request last month, those dorms filled up three weeks prior to the beginning of registration, two weeks before last school year ended." The old lady shrugs one of her shoulders handing the paper back to Samantha. She scoffs and glances at Kim, making her friend chuckle. "Oh come on, Sam? I doubt it will be that bad to have a roommate. Besides, that's the building I will be dorming as well. Let me see your paper?" She snatches the paper away from her glancing at her room number.
She smiles and looks up, back at her friend "Hey, you're in the same side as me! You're one floor above mine. See? it won't be so bad! We'll be neighbors Sam!" Her friend rolls her eye, as she gets dragged out of the office. The lady giggles, nodding her head as the two friends walk out and she turns to continue with her day of labor.
"Oh, this is going to be so much fun!!" Kim cheers and claps her hands as she jumps in joy. Making her golden mid back long hair bounce naturally on her back.
Samantha sighs, placing one hand up to cover her face from the sun as she glances around the campus. She stops as she notices the same bike from earlier parked next to a white challenger car. She takes a step back bumping in to a tall guy with dark brown hair, holding a stack of books as he made his way out of the student book store.
His books fall to the ground and many students laugh at them as she stumbles on top of him. Hovering over his body, as she stares into a pair of light brown eyes behind glasses. Her hair partially covering her face. His hand gripped her waist avoiding her to hit the ground, stopping her from hurting herself. He stairs back at her, her dark brown eyes glued on him..... a handsome dark brown hair boy named, Russell.
"I-I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to. I got distracted." She tethers, as she tries to get up. Her friend quickly coming to aid her, as they both stand.
"Sam, oh my god! Are you ok?" She goes over as they both help pick up his books. "No I, I'm fine....it's just...Again, I apologize, it wasn't my intention. I'm really sorr-" She gasps as she tries to catch air. "It's fine, don't worry. It was partially my fault. I tend to walk with my head down. I didn't see where I was going either." Russel responds as their hands grasp to pick up the last book.
They stare at each other as their hands continue holding the same book.
Samantha releases the book and stand la to her feet quickly as Kim clears her throat, bringing both out of their trance. Russell smiles and gets up, placing the last of his books on top of the stack he holds in his hands.
"Ok, well... either way, I really am sorry. My name's Samantha, by the way." She gives him a small smile, lowering her face from the embarrassment she was feeling, holding her hand up to shake his hand. He smiles, as he reaches out shacking her hand. "I'm Russell, it's nice to meet you Samantha." He smiles and leans forward shacking her hand.
"Anyway, I'll see you around. Gotta head to class before it's too late. Hope to see you again Sam." He smiles, winking an eye at her and walking away.
Kim walks to her side and throws an arm over her shoulder. "Wow, he was really cute. Even for a guy in glasses. He was HOT!" Samantha rolls her eyes looking at her friend dumbfounded.
"Yeah....he really was...Ok, come on. We gotta go see where our rooms are. Then we gotta make sure they haven't given away our books at the student store, and we still have to review our schedules. Plus I'm getting a bit hungry. Do you think our dorms have a kitchen? If so we definitely gotta go shoppingfor food... and then we gotta go-"
"Wow.... relax Sam. We have all week to settle in. Remember, the first week is just introductory. The good stuff will begin next week. Ok?" Her friend puts her arms up.
Samantha sighs as she slips her body, "Yeah? Ok... let's go." She holds her arm out slightly bent, making Kim loop her hand with hers as both friends walk together.
Both friends walk through the massive corridors of the building, as students walk around trying to settle in. Some carry stacks of books, others carry blankets and pillows, luggage, and a few small furniture pieces that can easily be taken apart.
They had already made their way to Kim's room, and met with Candace, a junior law student who seemed to hit it off with Kim right away. Sam on the other hand stayed quiet the whole time. Knowing quite well it takes her time to open up to people.
They glance at the numbers looking for room 11C on the third floor. Pulling her luggages behind her, with Kim helping her with the rolling suit case where she holds some of her essentials for her room.
"Number 9C, number 10C, number 11C, here we are... of course!.... it had to be the last room in the hall right?" Complaining on how bad the lighting is here, from the obvious lack of cleaning done in this building.
She opens the envelope the old lady handed her with the paper to her dorm and retrieved the single key inside.
Placing it to the key hole and turns the doorknob along with it. She gasps at the sight. Gleaming with joy, and averting her sight from corner to corner.
She makes her way in, running her fingers along the small kitchen island and glancing over to the small living room.
"Well, by the looks of that game console in your new livingroom, I'd say you got a boy as a roommate my darling. But, a clean one too. I mean look at this place? It's spotless." Kim crosses her hands nodding her head towards the newly installed game console connected to the television mounted on the wall. She can't help but admire how clean the place is.
'Or maybe a girl who enjoys gaming too. You know? The kind of girl like the one before me?" Samantha gestures towards Kimberly making her giggle.
"Ok well, you got me there. But wouldn't it be hot to have a boy as a roommate? Specially a hot one like that guy you bumped into early, Huh?" Kim bumps her hip against Sam who smirks and pushes her back gently.
Everything in the apartment dorm in tacked, not one glass or plate out of place.
She makes her way to the hallway wondering which room would be hers. Pondering by the entrance to the hallway, she comes to a halt and glances back at Kim.
"What? What's wrong?" Kim worries.
"No, nothing. I just don't want to open up the door and see someone sleeping inside. I'm skeptic to which room will be mine. And by the looks of it, I think it'd be best to wait for my roommate so we can discuss our arrangements. It looks like he, or she will be paying for all these extra little gadgets every month. I'd hate to leave everything under their care and not help pay for any of this." She shrugs her shoulder, wrapping her hands over her arms, and pursing her lips.
Kim rests Samantha's luggage by one of the bar stools in the kitchen and walks towards the hallway. She opens the door next to Kim realizing it's empty.
"Well.... there you go! First check, off the list. This is your room. " she smiles at her and goes back quickly to grabb the luggage, taking it to the room.
The girls finish setting up. Placing new covers on the bed, putting up pictures to decorate and setting up her study corner.
"Ok, you know... I think we should take a break. How about lunch. Then we can go back to my dorm and set up my stuff, is that ok?" Kim cleans the sweat from her forehead leaning on the desk, her hand rubbing her stomach.
Samantha giggles, making her way towards the night stand to grab her keys and phone.
"Of course... how could I say no? You've helped me set up big time. It would of taken me all day to do this on my own. Let's go?" She tilts her head towards the door looping her arm around her friends arm.
They exit the dorm as they make their way down to the student lounge.
The cafeteria seems a bit busy today, luckily they spot an empty table. They walk towards that empty table with trays of food in hand after they have paid and grabbed their drinks, same time as Russell and Brandon walked towards the same table. All four reach the table at the same time, setting their trays down.
"Umm, hi." Kim looks between the boys as Russell and Samantha lock eyes. Her face becomes blushed and seeing the redness on her cheeks makes him smile.
"Hi there... sorry but we seem to have no other tables available right now. Mind if we join you guys?" Brandon and Kimberly both look at their friends who have become suddenly mute.
"Uh, no not at all." Kim replies smiling at Brandon as he taps Russell on his arm before sitting down.
