Prologue
My friends hold my arms as I watch, helplessly, as the man I called friend shoots her in the back and lets her fall into the alley below. The man runs away as she lays there, bleeding on the wet concrete ground beneath her. My friends let me go and I run over to her. I hold her in my arms, crying.
“Please! Please stay with me!” I beg, “please! Everything’s going to be fine, you’re going to make it,” I sob.
My hands are drenched in crimson-red liquid, but I don’t care, all I care about is that she survives.
“April, can you save her?”
She doesn’t do anything. She just looks at me with teary eyes.
“Sage?” I ask, looking at my friend. She does the same as April. Their eyes are all I need to understand what they are saying, I’m sorry, but she’s gone.
I hug her motionless body and cry into her chest. “I… hate him! He has ruined everything!” I yell through muffled sobs.
“I know,” Kate says, kneeling next to me, letting me cry into her shoulder, “At least, she’ll be happy and peaceful next to all the people we have lost over a couple of years that you guys have been in the Hidden and she won’t have to get hurt again.”
When Griffin picks her up to take her to the morgue, a note falls out of her pocket.
I didn’t know what to think of the note in my hand. Can I never be happy in a world like this? the contents of the note make me ask myself.
