The sound of our feet tapping against concrete could be heard as we ran down the dimly lit alley.

My bare feet stepped into the puddles with a splash as I moved swiftly, not wanting them to catch up with us. My hand was held firmly in Vanni’s and he pulled me along as he dashed to find an exit.

After the gun shots had seized, we dashed from the dumpster and we were shot after when they noticed movement below. Thankfully we only acquired a few grazes.

My brown hair stuck to my sweaty forehead and my dress clung to my body uncomfortably. Vanni was sweaty as well, his blonde hair lying down flat on his head and sweat dripped down his chin to his neck.

He pulled out a cellphone and called up someone.

“Get the car around to the back alley!”

He turned taking a left and I followed my dress clutched in my hand. I ran with aching legs never once slowing down.

Soon we were coming close to the end of the alley, Vanni looked back at me with a reassuring smile. He still wore the mask and his blue eyes shone at me.

“We’ll be out of here in a few minutes,” he whispered as we came out of the alley onto the street.

The street was littered with people who were walking and conversing, store lights were on, shining brightly and illuminating the area. The chatter of the people infiltrated my ears, not allowing me to think clearly.

Vanni pulled us to the side, sticking to the wall and behind a light post. He scouted the area, looking around for the car I guessed.

“Where the hell are they?” he hissed.

Just then a black car pulled up in front of us, he pulled me over to it and hurried me into the back before climbing into the front seat.

“Get us the fuck out of here!”

The screeching of the wheels filled my ears as the car sped off. I sat in the back cradling my body against the car seat. I shook as fear struck my brain.

Vanni looked back at me with mixed emotions, I was so disconnected right now that I couldn’t even try to decipher them.

I clamped my eyes close as the memories danced around in my head.

“Let’s play a game Jessie. It’s called strip me,” he chuckled.

My eyes widened in fear as his hand slipped under my dress. I tried to reach around to push him off but he grabbed my hands and placed them on my back. I trashed beneath him as I yelled for help.

“Let me go!” I cried out, tears streaming through my mask.

He leaned down towards my ear his hand rising higher and higher. “This will be fun.”

I jutted as hands touch me and I withheld a cry. I looked up to see Vanni staring down at me with glossy eyes that hold sympathy.

“We’re here,” he whispered as he climbed back to the door holding out his hand.

I cautiously took it and climbed out of the car trembling. My legs gave out as I stepped out and Vanni caught me before I fell. He took me in his arms and walked towards the house.

I zoned out as he made his way to through the house. Cromwell’s voice playing over and over in my head making me shiver in fright.

I was placed on familiar blue sheets and I curled into a ball. I heard water running, Vanni shuffling about and a door being locked.

Vanni lifted me from the bed carrying me to the bathroom and placing me on my feet. He stood behind me undoing my zipper, the dress fell to my feet and I heard him step back.

“Can you take it from here?” he asked.

I nodded as I unclasped my bra, stripped off my gloves and stepped out of the dress. I stepped into the pale blue bathtub after stripping off my panty.

Vanni had his back to me probably from when I started to strip. I discarded the underwear on the floor and sunk farther under the water. The foamy water now reached my chin.

“I’m finished,” I whispered my voice barely audible.

Vanni turned and regarded me with a concerned look. He walked over to the edge of the tub and sat on it staring at me.

“DD,” he breathed. “Do you want to talk about it?”

I shook my head and clamped my eyes shut as I sunk under the water. The water provided a numb lifeless feeling and it soothed me. The only thing I was focused on was how long it would take me to run out of oxygen and the water surrounding me.

I rose, wiping my hand down my face and looked up at a frowning Vanni.

“Can I get some privacy?” I asked softly.

He nodded with reluctance in his eyes. “Please don’t do anything crazy.”

He slipped through the door and as he did I released a cry not able to hold it back any longer. My body shook as I recalled how disgusted I felt and tears streamed down my face in fright and relief. It was over.

I stepped out of the bathroom in a black sweatpants and white T-shirt. I looked at my bed to find Vanni changed into grey sweats and lounging on my bed.

“DD,” he whispered as he held out his hands. “Come to me, please.”

I slowly walked across the room, my bare feet squeaking against the wooden floor. I climbed into the bed staying away from Vanni.

He looked at me a bit hurt and concerned. “Come into my arms, I won’t hurt you.”

I know you won’t KISA, it’s just– ugh!

I released a cry as I jumped into his arms. My face buried in his chest as I heaved up a series of sobs. Please don’t ever leave me alone like that again. Please stay by me. Your warmth and presence makes me feel secure. I can’t phantom what would have happened if you weren’t there.

I was shook, that man tried to rape me and another wanted to kill me. There was a moment I thought they each were going to succeed.

His hold on my hands were firm as his hands traced my skin and his gun pointed in my face. Cromwell’s voice in my head made me feel so weak. I tried to fight him off but it was hard. I wasn’t ready. I wasn’t strong enough. It was by mere luck that I got him off me. If I hadn’t head butted him I would be beneath him right now taking part in a something horrifying or worse I would be dead.

“I was so scared, he was so close to taking me. I thought I was a goner. I thought he was going to rape me. Defile me. Ruin me,” I laid on top of him with his hands on my waist and holding the back of my head.

He cooed me and petted my hair. “I know it’s frightening but it didn’t happen. You’re still pure and he’s not going to ever touch you again.”

His voice had a hint of anger in it that he was trying to hide but I picked up on it.

“He could’ve...”

“DD, stop. He didn’t. You won’t ever have to be put through that again. He’s dead. He can’t touch you.”

I cringed as a thought slipped into my mind. I killed someone. Normally this would have shook me to the core, my thoughts should be running crazy as I dwell on the fact that I killed a man but they didn’t. He deserved it. He wanted to rape me, I felt no remorse. Death was too easy for him.

“I know but what if I’m assigned to do this again?” I asked as I stared into his ocean blue eyes. “I can’t go through that again. I’m just sixteen KISA.”

He closed his eyes with a sign and reopened them to stare at me with determination. “You won’t be placed in that situation again DD. I’ll make sure of it.”

I smiled as a tears trailed down my cheek. I whispered a small thanks as I leaned towards his lips.

Wasting no time he captured my lips and we laid there making out, enjoying our closeness but not urging to get closer. Because for now this close was enough.
