Chapter 27 - Old hag

SAGE’S POV

Ten a.m., a good time to go with my aunt to make a deal with my brothers’ school, right? Not really, my temper today is worse than it has been the last few weeks and I’m ready to snap at anyone who dares to even stare at me for more than two seconds. Besides my bad temper today the weather isn’t that pleasant. They’re saying on the news that fall has arrived earlier this year and my body is not liking this at all!

I’m still a tad thin and my aunts aren’t all that happy with that, they think it’s the drugs used on me that are responsible for this, but I’m not so sure. After all, it’s been months! I mean how long can they stay in my system? Shouldn’t they be gone by now?

Blaze is a bit better than me, although she’s still a bit small. I’m already thirty-one weeks along, almost thirty-two, but my lack of meat on my bones is leaving me a human iceberg! I’m always cold! Between me and Blaze she’s the only one who’s been putting on weight, I’ve gained eight kilos but two of them belong to her.

“Sage, let’s go. There are two chocolate muffins in there, one yogurt with fruit and cereals and a pack of chocolate milk alongside a spoon for the yogurt. Eat on the way to school.” Aunt Jully gives me the paper bag and helps me off of the bed.

“Thanks.” I grab the vitamins and other crap I have to take after eating and put them inside the bag. After that, I follow my aunt out of my room.

“Are y’all going already?” Uncle James asks us as he walks out of his room with crutches.

“Yeah, I have an appointment with the principal at eleven, and it’s better to be safe than sorry...” Aunt Jully mutters when she sees uncle James raise an eyebrow at her and eye the clock behind her. “God knows how much that school hates our family.” She drily says and rolls her eyes. Uncle James laughs at her and smiles at me.

“The principal works for us, the last one was substituted after Diesel’s accident. If you ever have any problems just go to him.” I nod my head and make a mental note to investigate this guy.

“Ok, see ya later uncle. Let’s get this hell over with aunt Jully.”

“I agree, kid, let’s go. Later, James.” Uncle James waves us goodbye and we head to the elevator.

“Wait!” He suddenly calls us. “Aren’t you going to be too hot with that huge hoodie of Shauwn’s dressed, Sage?”

Me? Too hot? This crap is just barely keeping me warm! All the drugs injected in me during those torturous six months and now all these meds along with these pregnancy hormones have fucked up my body heat regulation. I’m almost shaking with how could I’m feeling!

“A better question is, are you still cold Sage?” Aunt Jully correct uncle James and crossed her arms over her chest, waiting for my answer while uncle James’s eyes almost bulged out of their sockets with the question.

“I feel almost as cold as I was while inside that cell I was held captive in, even though it’s fifteen degrees Celcius outside.” I answered and watched as my uncle’s jaw falls open. Aunt Jully shakes her head and heads back to my room probably to get me a jacket. She comes back less than three minutes later and hands me a dark blue jacket.

“Damn kid, they really messed up with your immune system!” Uncle James exclaims worried as he watches me put on the jacket.

“They did.” Aunt Jully confirms. “But hopefully with time, we’ll be able to reverse the damage done. Now, let’s go.” We bid our goodbye to uncle James once again and left the hospital.

- Twenty-six minutes, a hot chocolate, and my whole bag of breakfast and meds later and we arrived at school. -

“I’m going to speak with the principal first, just wait by the chairs outside of his office, ok?” I nod and follow my aunt inside the school, paying close attention to the way to the office to memorize it in case I ever need it.

“Ok, Sage, we’re here. Please behave, don’t kill nor attempt to kill anybody, and wait for me to call you, please. The office could be a bit busy but don’t worry, nobody should bother you if anything does happen I let you threaten whoever tries to mess with you.”

“Yeah, yeah aunt, let’s just get this over with, I know you’re itching to get out of here as soon as possible.” She gives me a tight lip smile and nods her head.

“I just hope to not encounter that bitch today.” Aunt Jully muttered under her breath as she opened the office door and walked inside. This is something that I probably wasn’t supposed to hear but oh, well... I can’t wait to find out who is the ‘bitch’!

The secretariat/office we walked into was very quiet and seemed almost abandoned if it wasn’t for the petit woman behind the counter.

“This is the office they deal with student problems, transfers, manuals, etc, if you ever need anything just come here and the person behind the counter will try to help you in the best of their capacities.” My aunt quickly explained and headed towards the woman behind the counter.

“Buongiorno, signorina, ho appuntamento con il preside alle undici. So di essere in anticipo, ma ho questioni urgenti da discutere con lui. (Good morning, miss, I have an appointment with the principal at eleven. I know I’m early, but I have urgent matters to discuss with him.)”

“Buongiorno signora Sinner, il preside la sta già aspettando, suo cognato ha chiamato in anticipo, mi permetta solo di avvertirlo che lei è qui, per favore. (Good morning Mrs. Sinner, the principal is awaiting you already, your brother in law called in advance, let me just warn him that you’re here, please.)” The petit woman shily rambled and got up leaving the counter and going to knock on the principal’s door. My aunt and I followed the woman towards the door, the secretary exchanged a few words with the principal and I zoned out, next thing I know aunt Jully is walking inside the office, and just when I was turning around to follow the secretary back to the main place of this shit hole when the principal called me to his office as well.

This is going to be interesting... - I thought to myself and turned back around, scowling at having to move back and forth like a doll. My scowl only deepened when the old man offered me a smile and once again beckoned me inside his office.

My feet are swollen and aching, just like my back and this bitch is making me move back and forth! If looks could kill, this bastard would be six feet under.

“È decisamente una Peccatrice. (She’s definitively a Sinner)” The man muttered animately. Aunt Jully chuckled at the man’s reaction but one look at my face and her chuckles turned into a sinister grin. She knows me so well!

“Oh veramente? E cosa l’ha tradito? La mia strana somiglianza con mio padre? Il segno sul mio collo? O era il profondo cipiglio sul mio viso?! (Oh, really? And what gave it away? My uncanny resemblance to my father? The mark on my neck? Or was it the deep scowl on my face?!)” I sarcastically asked, taking a step closer towards him with each question. The man’s smile diminished to a neutral facade for a few moments while he was deep in thoughts and then he opened his mouth again.

“Sì, decisamente la figlia di Sin. Entrambi hanno lo stesso atteggiamento sgradevole. (Yes, Definitely Sin’s daughter. Both have the same nasty attitude.)” The old man scowled and straightened his stance.

“I’m Flavio Vitale.” We shacked hands and he continued his presentation. “I’ve worked for your grandfather for forty-three years, I started at seventeen and I’ve been through all of your uncles and father as their bodyguard.” His thick Italian accent made me, weirdly, remember my godfather, when he spoke in English his heavy Russian accent was also very noticeable like Flavio.

“Nice to meet you, I’m Sage but if I get in your school I’ll prefer if you call me Davina.” Both Flavio and my aunt gave me weird looks at my request but agreed.

“You’re already in. Just by being daughter of who you get you automatically in this school besides I don’t see why you shouldn’t have the right to go to school and learn like all the other kids.” His answer pleased me to some degree and after speaking for a bit longer and explaining my situation, Flavio called in every coordinator of each subject, like the language’s coordinator, the science coordinator, and so on, except for the PE. Aunt Jully forbad me from doing any physical efforts that could put me and my baby at risk since our condition is stable but still risky.

While Flavio spoke with the coordinators, aunt Jully and I left to eat something before I spent hours doing tests to determine how much I know and to what grade I should go. Flavio and aunt Jully decided that it was for the best if the teachers meet me one at a time and that’s what happened. I did a vocational test and loads of other tests, and just when I thought it was over an old hag, the coordinator of the languages department, walked inside the office.

At first, she sounded nice but the moment I turned around in my chair to face her the woman lost her cool.

“NO! NO NO NO NO NO! MI RIFIUTO DI INSEGNARE UN ALTRO PECCATORE! MI RIFIUTO! HO INSEGNATO AI DEMONI DEI SUOI FRATELLI, ZIO, PADRE E NONNO MI RIFIUTO DI INSEGNARE A UN ALTRO DAVVERO PECCATORE! SOPRATTUTTO UNA DONNA PECCATORE! NON INSEGNERO’ A UN’ALTRA GEMELLA DI QUEL FAMIGLIA!!! (NO! NO NO NO NO NO! I REFUSE TO TEACH ANOTHER SINNER! I REFUSE! I’VE TAUGHT THE DEMONS OF HER BROTHERS, UNCLES, FATHER, AND GRANDFATHER I REFUSE TO TEACH ANOTHER FREAKING SINNER! ESPECIALLY A FEMALE SINNER! I WON’T TEACH ANOTHER SPAWN OF THAT FAMILY!!!)” The woman’s face was starting to turn purple, she was pulling at her hair and whizzing to breathe, I almost got worried if it wasn’t for her offensive words. I mean, calling me a ‘spawn’ and refusing to especially teach a female Sinner, what the hell does she have against me? Or my family in this case? The old hag looks like she should be retired. She taught my grandfather for god’s sake!

“Non dovresti essere in pensione? (Shouldn’t you be retired?)” I couldn’t help but blurt out. The death glare she sent my way making me laugh. Her face hadn’t yet recovered from her last anger attack before it started turning dark red again, she took an inhalator from her bag and took a few deep breaths from it before starting her screaming match again.

“VEDI, PRESIDE VITALE, VEDI LA SUA MANCANZA DI RISPETTO!? PROPRIO COME I SUOI FRATELLI! NON SOSTER QUESTO! LEI È COME LORO! MI HANNO CHIESTO TUTTI LO STESSO QUANDO MI INCONTRANO, LA SUA FAMIGLIA È MALEDATA E ANCHE ME STANNO MALEDANDO! MI PRENDONO ANNI DI VITA! MI HANNO DATO TUTTE LE RUGHE CHE HO OGGI!! AHAHAHAHAHA! (SEE, PRINCIPAL VITALE, SEE HER DISRESPECT!? JUST LIKE HER BROTHERS! I WON’t STAND FOR THIS! SHE’S JUST LIKE THEM! THEY ALL ASKED ME THE SAME WHEN THEY MEET ME, HER FAMILY IS CURSED AND THEY ARE CURSING ME TOO! THEY TAKE ME YEARS OF LIFE! THEY GAVE ME ALL THE WRINKLES I HAVE TODAY!! AHHAAHAHAHHA!)” She trowed a stack of paper in front of me and left running out of the office yelling about a curse, or something like that.

“SONO DAVINA, A PROPOSITO. (I’M DAVINA, BY THE WAY.)” I yelled loudly for her to hear me and by the way she screamed ‘The demon is following me!’ I guess she heard me.

“Quella vecchia strega è pazza. Dovrebbe essere in pensione. O in un cortile di psicopatici, entrambi funzionerebbero. (That old hag is crazy. She should be retired. Or in a psycho yard, either one would work.)” I mutter out loud quiet destastefull of the woman already.

“Sono sicuro che tu e tuo fratello vi prenderete cura del caso. (I’m sure you and your brother will take care of the case.)” Flavio laughs loudly and hands me a pen to start doing the test the old hag left me. I swear there are more than fifteen pages in here!

I guess now I know who my aunt was calling a bitch.
