Chapter 33 - Heart attack
Soon after leaving the canteen Zeke left us to go to his class, he is still in junior year, eleventh grade, and so he isn’t in any of my classes. I literally pouted when he explained that to me, these pregnancy hormones are fucking up with my head big time, besides being a forgotten mess I’m also an emotional one!
“Why are you pouting, Davina? We’re close to our classroom but I can guarantee you that the teacher is still not there.” And here I go again pouting! And why does Hazel have to be so sweet and attentive? It makes me want to cry... Blaze, I want you out as soon as you are ready, my daughter, you’re fucking up with my head!
“Ignore me, I’m still moping over not sharing classes with Zeke.” Isaack, who I only now noticed has been laughing his ass off while looking at my pout, suddenly snorted loudly and got himself between me and Hazel and mumbled only loud enough for the two of us to hear: “Sinner alert.” And starter stirring us quickly away from there.
Curious to see which one of my brothers we were ‘running’ from I turned my head back and saw Vin opening a locker and taking his things out. His posture tensed and he slowly and discretely started looking around, knowing I had been caught I keep on watching him, trusting Hazel and Isaack to steer me away from trouble while I was distracted watching my brother. Vin soon caught me watching him and locked his gaze on me like I had done to him. He frowns his eyebrows and wrinkles appear on his forehead while a confused expression takes over his face, I keep eye contact with him until we turn a corner and I lose sign of him, only then do I turn around to face forward and see that Hazel had seen our interaction.
“People don’t usually keep eye contact with the twins, even less for so long like you did, that’s why he was confused.” She quietly explains to me in whispers.
Soon we reach classroom number 13 B, our classroom for the next two hours or more, half of the class was already here but not the teacher.
Thank god for that.
“Let’s go seat in the back.” Isaack said and guided us to the back of the class and close to the windows. We sat down in the last row, Hazel sat to my left, on the windows’ side, and Isaack on my right, on the desk next to ours.
I could feel a few pairs of eyes on me but I choose to ignore them and instead focus my gaze outside. A not that big cloud of smoke dissipating in the air caught my eye, I followed the direction from which it came and found Diesel Sinner with a killer stick in his mouth.
If mom was here she would beat his ass and make him chew on bubble gum until he got rid of his vice! But... I can’t blame him, I can drive any sane man into madness and he’s going to have to put up with me for the rest of his life so I kind of understand his stress... And here are my mood swings! One moment I’m angry and in the next, I pity the guy! Ugh! I hate these shitty hormones...
I turned my attention back inside the classroom and see that almost every seat is taken and then, I notice the eyes. The eyes that are watching, gazing, and observing my corner of the classroom with the utmost attention. Never for one second during the next three minutes does this person’s gaze falter, but my patience does and so I scout the room looking for the rude person. This person confidentially so happens to be on the other side of the classroom in the corner seat opposed to mine, casually sitting sideways on his chair, while gazing at Hazel who is distractedly writing things in sticky notes.
“Damn, my brother has it bad...” I absently whisper and catch Hazel’s attention by accident. Hazel lifts up her head, humms in question, and follows my gaze towards Vin who is still impassively gazing at her. She blushes profusely when she catches Vin’s eyes and Isaack loudly huffs before sending my brother death glares.
Now I get why I was put between Hazel and Isaack, it was all to keep Hazel as far away from Vin as Isaack could. What the hell happened between those two? Ugh, I just hope this is not one of those moments in which I know what happened and because of my ‘pregnancy brain’, as Shauwn calls it, I forgot what happened. It has happened more frequently than I’d like to admit.
Pushing away my train of thoughts I look at Isaack and wait until he’s facing me to raise an eyebrow in question to see if he’ll tell me anything.
To my surprise, Isaack adverts his eyes from me and lowers his head, leaving the path to face my brother unobstructed. I scrunch up my eyebrows in confusion at Isaack’s actions and Vin sees my reaction. He scrunches up his eyebrows in confusion as well and watches me.
Is he mimicking me or is he truly confused? These brothers of mine and my daughter will be the end of me!
Vin is still watching me so I lift up one eyebrow, asking him without words ’What do you want?’, to which he responds by making the same thing and gesturing with his head to me. I scowl at his stupid reply and huff before rolling my eyes, to which Vin smirks slightly and chuckles soundlessly. Just then the second ring comes and there’s still no sign of the teacher.
“Dove diavolo è quel vecchio pipistrello? (Where the hell is that old bat?)” I ask Hazel and Isaack. Neither of them is able to give me a straight answer so they just shrug their shoulders.
“Pensi che sia morta mentre veniva qui? (Do you think she died on her way here?)” I uttered these words loudly with hope and glee enhancing them, almost everyone in the classroom started laughing loudly, even Vin! Only Hazel simply smiled, amused, and shook her head softly.
“Spero che! Sfortunatamente quella strega ha ancora molti anni per torturarci. (I wish! Unfortunately, that witch still has many years left to torture us.)” Isaack commented, breaking the laughter of everyone and making whispers of agreement come loose from all over the classroom.
“Speriamo solo che arrivi di buon umore oggi. (Let’s just hope she comes in a good mood today.)” Someone declared loudly and, right after that girl spoke the clicking of heels outside of class could be heard making their way on the hall.
“La strega sta arrivando! (The witch is coming!)” The same girl from before exclaimed and the whole class went silent and straightened their backs tensing up. I stole a glance at Vin and saw that he too had tensed up but he didn’t straighten his back, he turned his body around and sat properly on his chair but he curled his figure a bit forward and grabbed a notebook.
As if feeling my confusion from my brother’s behavior, Hazel taps my shoulder softly and pushes her notebook towards me.
‘He does that to get through class unnoticed. Mrs. Donini cannot complain about him if she doesn’t see him and if she sees him, he’s writing down notes. This way she can’t scream at him and he can take notes and pass them to Diesel.’
Ok, that’s actually a smart move... But how do they pull this off when it comes to absent marks? Surely if they miss or go unnoticed in class the whole year they will fail this class and consecutively the year?
‘When Mrs. Donini checks if everyone is in class he simply raises his hand when she calls his name and she marks his presence. Diesel is a different case, your father had to make a deal with her otherwise he would fail the year with all the absent marks he receives in this class. He only comes to class when we have quizzes and tests which is once a week after the evaluations are done he simply leaves and Mrs. Donini doesn’t complain.’
“How the hell did you know what I was thinking about? Are you some kind of witch or something?” I whisper very lowly to Hazel and she smiles before answering me.
“You Sinners all think alike. It’s easy to know what you’re thinking after being raised by your family.” She whispers back.
Ok, I can’t disagree with that, I thought and was about to tell this same exact words to Hazel when the classroom door was suddenly open and the hag herself came barreling hurriedly in, messing around with something inside her bag.
“Mi dispiace per i miei figli in ritardo, ma non trasciniamoci. Il riassunto di oggi è- (I’m sorry for my lateness kids but let’s not drag this on. Today’s summary is-)” All of a sudden, Mrs. Donini robotically lifted her head from looking inside her bag, and somehow she locked eyes with me.
“DEMONE! HO DETTO LORO CHE NON VOGLIO INSEGNARE A UN ALTRO DEMONE! RIFIUTO, RIFIUTO, RIFIUTO!ESCI DALLA MIA CLASSE, DEMONE! SEI UNA MALEDIZIONE NELLA MIA VITA! NON SONO SUFFICIENTI TUTTI GLI ALTRI DEMONI CHE HO SOPPORTATO IN PASSATO? PERCHÉ DIO? PERCHÉ MI HAI ABBANDONATO? NON SONO UNA PERSONA CATTIVA! (DEMON! I TOLD THEM I DIDN’T WANT TO TEACH ANOTHER DEMON! I REFUSE, I REFUSE, I REFUSE! GET OUT OF MY CLASSROOM, YOU DEMON! YOU’RE A CURSE IN MY LIFE! WASN’T IT ENOUGH ALL THE OTHER DEMONS I HAVE PUT UP WITH IN THE PAST? WHY GOD? WHY HAVE YOU ABANDONED ME? I AM NOT A BAD PERSON!)” She screamed and cried, surprising everyone around us, especially Vin who was probably the only one she normally cursed so fluently.
“PERCHÉ?! (Why!?)” The woman cried, desperately grasping at her hair.
I got up, already feed up with this circus show, and let my frustration be known. As if it wasn’t already bad enough to have to put up with this old hag, Blaze woke up and decided to play soccer with my stomach, if she keeps this up I’ll end up spilling my lunch all over the floor.
“Guardi qui, signora, non so cosa diavolo ha contro di me, ma è meglio che metta a posto il suo atteggiamento perché non mi vergogno di prendere una vecchia signora per il suo orecchio e trascinarla nell’ufficio del preside per condotta non professionale! (Look here, lady, I don’t know what the hell you have against me but you better fix that attittude of yours because I have no shame of grabbing an old lady by her ear and dragging her to the principals office for unprofessional conduct!)”
“HAAAA!” Mrs. Donini yelled in response, screaming bloody murder and cursing me like there was no tomorrow, I took my phone out of my bag and messaged Aldus to come to my classroom and to bring Vitale with him.
This situation is starting to get out of control.
In the middle of all her yelling, the old bat suddenly grabbed her chest, she kept a hand pressed against her heart and started swaying a bit. Only now did I take notice of her short breath and her pale face, a sign I have seen too many times during some of my assassination jobs.
“God damn it! The woman is having a fucking heart attack.” I exclaimed and hurried to get up and go help the hag as best as I could.
Nobody around me moved, only Vin had the same thought as me and advanced towards the old woman. But our good intentions were not accepted by the dying witch.
“ALLUNGATEVI DA ME DEMONI! STAI LONTANO! NON MI PRENDERETE LA VITA! NON RUBAI LA MIA ANIMA E LA TRASCINAI CON TE ALL’INFERNO! (GET AWAY FROM ME YOU DEMONS! STAY AWAY! YOU WILL NOT TAKE MY LIFE! YOU WILL NOT STEAL MY SOUL AND DRAG IT WITH YOU TO HELL!)” The woman is definetely crazy.
“Oh, per l’amor di Dio! Qualcuno chiami il 118 e chiami un’ambulanza! (Oh, for god’s sake! Someone call 118 and get an ambulance on the way!)” Some people broke out of their shock but most staied frozen.
“Oh, per l’amor di Dio!(Oh, for god’s sake!)” No one did anything while I tried to keep the fucking woman calm. A hand landing on my shoulder caught my attention, I turn around and Vin was the one behind me.
“Non preoccuparti, chiamo il 118. (Don’t worry, I’ll call 118.)” I nodded at Vin and let loose a breath I didn’t even know I was holding in.
“Davina, I’ll stay with Mrs. Donini, go see if the principal is on his way.” Hazel muttered and I gratefully left the crazy old woman alone. I walked towards the classroom’s door but another teacher in the doorway blocked my path.
“Che cosa sta succedendo qui?! (What is going on here?!)”
“Fuori dai piedi o ti vomiterò addosso! (Out of my way or I’ll vomit all over you!)” I yelled at the woman when Blaze gave me a particularly hard kick to my stomach. The teacher quickly moved away from me and I ran to the other side of the hallway towards a trash can.
“Davina! What’s going on?” Aldus and Vitale questioned me from ten meters away from classroom 13 B.
“Old hag, heart attack.” I blurted out before throwing up in the trash can.
Ugg... What the hell is it today? Is it the day of making Sage vomit all day and die of starvation?
Just then the paramedics arrived and took a passed-out Mrs. Donini out of the classroom, while I watched from the side with Aldus beside me on the phone with probably my aunt.
“DAVINA! Are you ok?” Isaack and Hazel hurried over to me and asked. Hazel bent down and put a hand on my forehead checking my temperature.
“Yeah, I’m good, besides it seems as if we won’t have to worry about Mrs. Donini for a while.” My smug smile made Isaack laugh while Hazel and surprisingly Vin smiled at me.
