Chapter 59

The aggressive campaign to root out and destroy Jake Scribner and the remaining rebels intensified into the fall. The NAP strike teams were joined by units from the Norwegian Special Forces. Recently, the occupying forces had located the group’s former base camp in the midst of the Bonaparte Plateau. The ramshackle cabin was exactly where Sarah Jane had told them it was. Upon blasting the cabin and adjacent buildings back to the Stone Age, crews sifted through the remains for bodies. To their chagrin, there was no evidence whatsoever of anybody even being there.

“I knew that little bitch was lying to us!” Major Toombs’ face was crimson-red as he stood in Frank Carragher’s office. “She was merely buying herself more time. Sir, we must torture her until she tells us exactly where Jake Scribner, Kevin Sorenson and Mallory Hutchinson are hiding.”

“Major, perhaps you didn’t check the remains thoroughly enough. Bodies would be charred, almost impossible to identify. Guerrilla bands have a tendency to be very mobile.”

“I spent the better part of twenty years chasing after guerrillas. I know everything there is to know about them.”

“Well Major, if you think it will do you any good, by all means, be my guest. I meant to ask you, what is your opinion of that Norwegian colonel?”

“He’s a good soldier. Believes in what he’s doing.”

At that moment, Nicole entered the office. She was dressed professionally in a knee-length skirt and blazer.

“Mr. Carragher, I have all of those reports typed up. Would you like me to mail them directly to Denver?”

“If you don’t mind I’d like to give them all a once-over first. Just set them on my desk.”

“Not a problem at all,” Nicole said before leaving the office.

Toombs continued to be displeased with his supervisor’s decision to bring Nicole Clare into their lives.

“Sir, with all due respect, I cannot understand for the life of me why you are foolishly trusting that woman with confidential information. Considering the fact that she was once engaged to Jake Scribner, she has only one intention and that’s to destroy us. Whatever you do, Sir, don’t let your guard down. You’ll regret it.”

“Major, I have enough shit on my plate at the moment and don’t need you treating me like an errant child. Ms. Clare is a changed woman. Call me old-fashioned, but I still believe in giving people a second chance.”
