SoH: Sky of Heirs (Chapter 1 - Heavenly Song) [Pilot]

This is the tale of a group of friends born with affinity to a familial line of power known as the “Aura”. Aura is a manifestation of the innate extension in a person’s soul. The Aura can be manipulated and harnessed via the host’s will. The proceeding story mainly follows Reign C. Chaser and his struggle to fulfill a thirst for possession.

It was a night that had hail flow for hours on end. Deep in the slumbering city of Sydney came the birth of a boy destined by the alignment of the constellations. After nearly sixteen hours in labour, the first son of Chaser for the 21st century was born. “He’ll be like an emperor, this will be the beginning of his Reign”.

~17 years later~

“Settle down, settle down. Okay class, today we have here a new transfer student from... uhh, where are you from again?“. “Melbourne”. “Ahh yes, this is Crystal from Melbourne and starting from today she’ll be part of this class. You can sit over there in the middle next to Reign.” As Crystal walked down to her seat she eyed the boy that she would be sitting beside. Jet black hair and dark brown eyes on a perfectly-fitted face, nothing that could be picked apart to be an imperfection. As she sat down the boy took a shy glance at her and then looked back forward. “Oh, by the way class, overall test results for the first term will be posted on the bulletin board in the main hallway by recess. Best of luck everyone. Now let’s begin today’s lesson on maths”.

As the lesson began it occurred to Crystal that she didn’t yet have the book for the class. After asking the teacher for one and discovering that there were no more to be given out she was told to share with Reign for the time being. “Reign, could you put the book in the middle so that I can see it too?“. “Uhh... yeah okay”. Crystal moved her seat and inched closer to Reign so that she could see the book more clearly. “Sorry, my eyes aren’t that great. My vision’s been deteriorating since a few years ago.” “Oh uhm, okay”. Reign’s shy and awkward replies made Crystal think it was as if he had been starved of female attention for the majority of his life. After answering only a few questions the bell rang to signal the start of recess. “Thanks for sharing your book with me”. “Don’t mention it. It made me happy that you sat next to me”. “Happy? Why?“. “Just because”.

Reign packed up his book and other belongings quickly to head out along with the other people in the class to the main hallway. Everyone was crowding around the board trying to find their name like a group of ants finding their first meal in days. “Wow, Reign is first as usual I guess. Yep it’s just Reign again. Aww man, Reign again really?“. Reign quietly walked away to go to his usual spot to meet up with his friends. In the midst of the ruckus, a quiet but clear tune began to play around the school. A tune so distinct and mesmerizing that it couldn’t be learnt from another. Suddenly, a sharp cry followed by an explosion could be heard nearby.

The shrieking cries and explosion came from the direction of the quadrangle. Crystal, who was reading a book in a classroom during the happenings of this ordeal, slowly peered through a nearby window. There, she saw Reign confidently walking towards three mysterious figures that wore masks with designs that were almost unworldly. They had such large builds that most wouldn’t believe they were human.

“And who might you be..? Whatever, it matters not who you are. We are looking for a boy that goes by the name Chaser. Do you know him?“. “Yeah, I know him”. “Where is he?“. “Man, you aren’t you guys here a little early? I wasn’t expecting this to happen so soon. Well, anyway, you’re looking at him. It’s me. I’m Reign, first son of Chaser and you three won’t be seeing me again. Actually, you won’t be seeing anything after this honestly.” “Get him”.

The two figures beside the central figure began to lunge towards Reign. Instead of backing off Reign crept forward and a shadowy aura slowly surrounded him with a primary colour of purple. His uniform changed into an outfit that looked almost seemingly made only for the purpose of battle while a sword-like object formed in his hand. It was odd. Unlike normal blades where the steel would be of a silver shade; Reign’s blade was black with a crossed pulsating line of purple going through it. As the figures came at him, Reign simply passed through them with two slashes completely severing from the top and bottom halves of the body. The central figure, bursting with anger, drew out its axes from its back and charged towards Reign. In a scene reminiscent of David versus Goliath, Reign struck down the figure with two horizontal slashes on each side and a vertical slash in the middle to cleanly finish his foe.

“Maybe I went overboard with those horizontal slashes. Oh well, whatever. Better call my rents to clean up this mess quickly”.

Erin Crowley: The concept here is really strong, but the execution is definitely lacking. Tenses, grammar, etc are all off, with at least one or more errors per 'Page' on my phone. kwilliams: I am an avid reader, and I do mean AVID and few indie authors capture my attention the way you have. I absolutely fell in love with these characters and their story. Ayesha Shaikh: I love the twists. 😆I like how the writer describes everyone's point of view and the character development. I'm gonna read all the books by this author (current and upcoming).
