Chapter 10: Drake's Birthday (part two)

Rebbeca drove to the hardware store to get a few things to fix up the church. On her way out the door, Danny pulled into the parking lot. As she put her bags in her car, Danny walked up to her. “Hey.”

“Hey,” she replied, looking at him. “What are you up to?”

“Just came to get some oil. You?”

“I needed some supplies. I’m fixing up a building for a friend.”

“Cool. Need some help?”

“Sure.” She grabbed a piece of paper and a pen. “Go to this address when you want to help.” She handed him the piece of paper.

“Okay, see you later,” Danny replied, before turning and walking into the store. Rebbeca got in her car and then drove back to the church. She walked inside and sat her bags on the floor.

She opened a few paint cans to get ready to start painting the first floor. She opened a pack of masking tape, and started masking the walls. Then, she propped the door open, to help with air flow.

Half way through the painting, Danny walked through the door. “Hey.”

“Hey. Grab a paint brush and let’s get to work,” she said. “There’s still lots to do.”

A few hours later, they were finished. They cleaned everything up and put the supplies in Rebbeca’s car. Then, they sat on the steps of the church.

“Well, I better go before my dad comes looking for me.”

“Still live with your folks?” Danny asked with a smile.

“Yeah, you?”

“No, I haven’t for a while.”

“Cool. Uh…tonight we’re having a party for a friend of mine, and if you want, you’re more than welcome to join us.”

“I don’t know. I’m not really the party type.”

“Neither am I.”

“Who’s the friend?”

“Drake Mathews,” she replied.

“Who else is going to be there?”

“It’ll be me, Drake, the Lancasters, and Shawn MaGreen.”

“I guess I’ll make an appearance,” he said. “Where at?”

“The Lancaster house.” She stood up. “So, I’ll see you there?”

“Yeah, what time?”

“Any time after seven.”

“Okay, see you then,” Danny said, standing. They walked to their cars and then drove away.

A few hours later, the party had started. Everyone was up stairs, when the doorbell rang.

“I’ll get it,” Rebbeca said. She got up and walked down stairs. She opened the door and saw Danny. “Come on in.” He walked inside and automatically, she can tell he does not want to be here.

“You sure it’s fine that I’m here?” Danny asked, as he took off his coat.

“Don’t worry, it’s fine.”

“Okay,” he said, in a tone that told her he didn’t believe her.

“Before you meet everyone, I need to tell you…don’t believe everything they say.” Danny smiled.

“I mean it. There is no telling what’s going to come out of their mouths.”

“Okay,” he smiled at her concern, “got it.” Rebbeca led him up the stairs to where everyone else was. Abigail and Sam had just finished a game of pool. Drake and Shawn paused their video game when Rebbeca came back upstairs.

“Guys, this is Danny Habanero,” she announced. Everyone came over. One by one, they all introduced themselves to Danny.

“Hey, want to play a game?” Sam asked Danny, as he pointed to the pool table.

“Sure,” Danny replied.

“Before you guys get started, can I have a word with you, Sam?” Rebbeca asked. Sam looked at Danny, then back at Rebbeca.

“Sure,” he replied. Rebbeca and Sam walked around to the other side of the stairs. “So, what’s up? And why is Danny here?”

“Keep your voice down,” she said. “It’s a long story, but I need to ask you to do me a favor.”

“Depends on what the favor is.”

“To not tell my father about Danny.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because he’s dangerous, Rebbeca. There’s no telling what he’ll do.”

“He’s already gone to jail for everything he’s done.”

“That we know of.”

“Look, I wouldn’t ask if it wasn’t important.”

“I’m only trying to look out for you.”

“I know…but, please?”

“Promise to call if anything goes wrong?”

“You’ll be the first to know.”

“Okay, fine.”

“Thank you, so much,” she said. “Now go have fun.” She pushed Sam back into the room. He and Danny walked over to the pool table. Abigail sat down with Shawn and took over for Drake, who was walking toward Rebbeca. “Everything okay?”

“Yeah, everything’s fine,” she replied.

“Have you told your dad yet? That you’re going to be late?”

“Oh, no. No, I forgot,” she said and turned toward the stairs. “Can you watch them for me?”

“Yeah, go on,” he chuckled. Rebbeca went down stairs and walked into the TV room. As she was dialing the number, she noticed the TV was on. As she listened to the phone ring, she watched the muted television. They’re still talking about the attack on the police station, she thought.

A drawing of what people say Oystra and Card Shark looked like appeared on the screen. They say Card Shark is about six feet, white, black hair, green eyes, and likes the color blue. When Rebbeca saw the picture of Card Shark, she thought of Danny; he matches everything they just said.

No one answered the phone, so she left a message. She turned off the TV, and walked back upstairs with the others. Rebbeca leaned against the top of the stairs and watched Danny. He and Sam are still playing pool, while Abigail, Drake, and Shawn watch TV. Drake saw the look on Rebbeca’s face. He got up and walked over to her. “What is it, now?”

“I think I know who helped Dark Rose.”

“Cool. Who?”

She looked at Drake, and then looked at Danny. He followed her eyes, and realized what she was trying to tell him.

“Oh.”

“Yeah.”

“I’m sorry.” He knows she likes Danny, but because he’s a villain, they can never be together.

“It’s okay. I’m not the one who’s going to be putting his butt back in jail,” she said. “Dark Vengeance is.”
