Chapter 25: A Death in the Family
Rebbeca and Danny walked inside her house and hung their coats up. “Don’t worry, my parents aren’t home.”
“Where are they?” Danny asked, as they walked into the kitchen.
“It’s their eight year anniversary, so my dad’s taking her out to dinner. Want to watch a movie?”
“The DVDs are over there.” She pointed across the room. Danny walked across the room and started looking at their DVDs. Rebbeca walked into the living room with a bag of chips, as two cop cars drove by with their lights on. “Wonder what happened?”
“Don’t even think about it.”
She walked over to the window. “I’m a superhero, I’m supposed to think about it.”
Danny walked up to her. “Not when you’re with me.” He sat down. “If I turn on the news, will you sit down?”
He turned on the TV as she sat down next to him. He changed the channel to the news.
“For those of you just joining us, twenty minutes ago, shots were fired in downtown Kernsville. The police arrived at the restaurant, and have been inside for ten minutes. The paramedics followed them in five minutes ago, and so far, no one has come out,” the news anchor said.
“Do you know who’s doing this?” Rebbeca asked.
“No, I wasn’t told about this. It might not even be related.”
“We need to go.”
“The city has cops for a reason. Besides, it sounds like the guy’s already gone.”
They watched as Sam walked out of the restaurant and over to the fire fighters on standby. They talked for a minute, and then, Sam walked to his car. The reporters swarmed him.
“Officer Lancaster, what happened?”
“Was anyone hurt?”
“Do you know who did this?”
Sam turned to them and gave them a short answer. “Yes, two people were killed in the shooting. We have a list of suspects, but no one has been confirmed.” Sam got in his car and shut the door.
With that comment and the look on his face, Rebbeca could tell he needed her help. “I need to go.” She got up.
“I’ll make some calls and see if I can find out who did this,” Danny said.
“Activate: Dark Vengeance.” She transformed as she walked out the door. She ran to her motorcycle and sped out of the driveway as fast as she could, headed for town.
She pulled up in front of the restaurant, parked next to a police car, and then ran up the steps leading to the door. “What happened?”
Sam pushed her back. “You don’t need to go in there. We have it under control.” He pushed her off to the side, stopping her from going in.
“I’ve dealt with a lot more shootings than you have.”
“This one’s different.”
She looked around and saw every other police car but the Sheriff’s. “What are you saying?”
“They’re gone, Rebbeca,” he whispered.
“Both?” she asked. He replied with a nod. Dark Vengeance turned around and walked back down the stairs. Then she ran to her bike and drove away before the reporters could catch her.
Danny hung up, as he got another call. “Yeah.”
“She’s on her way to you.”
“Who is this?”
“Sam,” he replied. “Rebbeca is madder than ever, and she’s coming to you.”
“Why, what did you say to her?”
“Danny, this isn’t a joke! Her parents were just murdered!” he yelled.
Danny nearly dropped the phone. “Where is she now?”
“I don’t know. She sped off the second I told her, but she drove toward her house. Where are you?”
“I’m at her place.” Just then, he saw head lights. “She’s here. Sam, what do I say?”
“I don’t know, just… stop her from doing anything stupid,” Sam replied, and then hung up.
Dark Vengeance pulled into the driveway and parked next to the house, transforming back into Rebbeca. She saw Danny standing outside the door. The closer she got to him the more tears he could see in her eyes.
“I’m so sorry, if I’d known-”
“Daniel, don’t. It wasn’t your fault.”
“I know, but-”
“Stop.” She put her hand over his mouth. “I don’t need a hero, okay?” She removed her hand from his mouth as she cried. “I need you.” Danny wrapped his arms around her and pulled her into him. He held her while she cried into his shoulder.
After a few minutes, she pulled back and looked at him. “Will you stay with me?”
“Yeah.” He led her inside and up to her bed. He waited until she fell asleep, and then walked down stairs, where he fell asleep on the couch.
