Chapter 44: Whitney's Demise

As they entered the room, Shadow Sweeper looked over his shoulder and saw them. He turned the machine gun toward them. The Crystal Girl stepped in front of Dark Vengeance, to protect her. Shadow Sweeper unloaded twenty bullets into The Crystal Girl and John Hall. After his gun ran out of bullets, he looked up and saw that The Crystal Girl was still standing.

She then, held up her Crystal Gun up and shot him. Hall was on the floor, his shirt full of bullet holes.

“John, are you okay?” The Crystal Girl asked, as he sat up.

“Yeah…I’m fine.” He stood and she was able to his that his flesh hadn’t been broken.

Dark Vengeance stepped out from behind The Crystal Girl and ran to Dark Arrow. “Crystal, get over here.” She rolled Dark Arrow onto his back. Dark Arrow had slits all over his body from bullets grazing him. The Crystal Girl ran over to them and got down to their level.

“Heal him.”

“You need to get back. Remember what the White Crystal does to you.”

Dark Vengeance quickly stepped back. The Crystal Girl put her hand on him. Her hand turned white. Slowly, all of the cuts on his body healed.

Dark Arrow let out a sigh of relief. “Thanks.”

“Anything for a…perfect stranger.”

“Sarcasm is not needed right now.”

She looked up saw Hall putting handcuffs on Shadow Sweeper. Hall walked over and stood next to Dark Vengeance.

“How are you still alive?” Dark Arrow asked Hall.

“I’m a clone of Sarah Whitney Lancaster,” he said it as if he had rehearsed it. “I can’t be killed, only deactivated by electricity.”

“So, if lightning hit one of those puddles, it’d come back to life?” The Crystal Girl asked.

“Great.” Dark Arrow turned to Dark Vengeance. “Where’s Dark Rose?”

“She’s bleeding out in the hall way,” she replied. “But Caster and Retsacnal are still unaccounted for.”

Dark Arrow stood up. “One at a time.” He walked toward the door Whitney went through. They walked into the next room and found Whitney sitting in a chair in the middle of the room.

“You’re more determined than I thought,” Whitney said. “So, what now?” Her voice sounded more evil than she looked.

Dark Vengeance stepped forward. “You’ve invested years of your life into ruining ours, made it your life’s mission to kill me and your kids.” Her eyes didn’t leave Whitney’s. “So, it’s hard to believe you would make it this easy to stop you.”

Whitney smiled. “I have to give you credit. Every other hero I’ve encountered has surrendered once they saw what I could do.” She stood and walked up to Dark Vengeance. “But you stayed…and fought. Even after I had Shadow Sweeper kill your parents. After I let Coal Dust kill Todd Jarrett. After I had Caster take control of Sam, so he could try and kill you. After I made Card Shark fall in love with you, only so he could betray you…after all of that, you’re still fighting.”

“You almost sound like you admire me.”

Whitney smiled. “Next time, do yourself a favor-” She shoved a knife into Dark Vengeance’s abdomen. “-and stay dead!”

The Crystal Girl and Hall tackled Whitney, as she stabbed her again.

Dark Arrow caught Dark Vengeance as she fell. “Take care of Whitney.” He laid Dark Vengeance across his lap. The Crystal Girl took a green ball off her belt and rolled it across the floor.

“Open,” she said, and watched as it transformed into a crystal tree. They slammed Whitney against it. Hall held Whitney as The Crystal Girl made the tree cover Whitney’s wrists, holding her in place.

“Is she okay?”

“Not really.”

They walked over to them.

“Can’t you heal her?”

“That will do more harm than good,” The Crystal Girl replied.

“Why?”

“It’s a long story.”

“So, what do we do?”

Hall turned around and walked over to Whitney. He put a knife up to her neck. “Where’s the Black Crystal?”

“John, what are you doing?” The Crystal Girl asked.

“Answer me!” he said, pushing the knife in deeper, making a drop of blood roll down her neck.

“In the basement,” Whitney said. “But you’ll never find it in time to save her life.” Hall pulled the knife away and then punched her, knocking her out.

“What was that about?” Dark Arrow asked.

“Black Crystal is the only thing that can heal her,” Hall replied.

“How do you know that?”

“It’s a long story.”

Steel walked in the room. “What happened?”

“It’s a long story,” Dark Arrow replied, and looked at Hall. “See if you can find it. If you can’t, let me know and I’ll get her to the hospital.” Hall nodded and then left with The Crystal Girl close behind him.

They ran down the hall as fast as they could, yet it didn’t seem fast enough. Hall went through a door labeled, basement. They ran down two flights of stairs and went through another door. They entered a room that looked like a jail.

“What is this place?” The Crystal Girl asked.

“The dungeon.”

“How do you know?”

“Whitney locked me up in here for a few years. Now come on, let’s go.”

“No. I need to find Foreshadow’s sister. You go without me.”

“Fine, but I’ll be right back.” Hall ran down a hallway full of doors. Slowly, she walked down the hall, looking in each cell. She kept walking until she came across a cell with someone in it. “Tiffany?”

The person raised her head and looked up. “Who’s there?”

It took her a second to remember that Tiffany can’t see her. “The Crystal Girl.”

“How do I know it’s you?”

The Crystal Girl looked into her eyes. She slammed her fist down on the lock, breaking it. Then, she opened the door and walked in. She pulled a Purple Crystal ball off of her belt and formed it into a bracelet, then, knelt down next to Tiffany. “You tell me.”

She put the bracelet on Tiffany’s wrist. Tiffany’s eyes changed; one glowed blue and the other glowed green, slowly piercing through the gray cloud in front of them.

Before Tiffany said a word, she wrapped her arms around The Crystal Girl. “I never thought I’d be so happy to see you.”

“I’ll take that as a complement.” She helped her stand up.

“Where are the others?”

“I’ll explain on the way.”

They left the cell.

“But right now, Dark Vengeance needs our help.”

“She’s alive?”

“I know, it sounds weird, but I’ll explain on the way.”

They ran down the hallway and met Hall at the end.

“Did you find it?”

“No. I think Whitney moved it.”

“Then, why did she tell us it was here?”

“I don’t know, but we need to go.”

“Wait,” Tiffany said. “There’s another person down here.” She ran down the hall until she found the right one. “Here.”

Hall ran to the cell. His hand formed a fist and then, changed to crystal. He smashed the lock and opened the cell door. The Crystal Girl walked over to the cell and froze when she saw who it was.

“Abby, what is it?” Tiffany whispered.

“How long has he been here?”

“Based on what I’ve heard, three or four years,”

Hall looked up at The Crystal Girl, but instead, found Abigail. He looked at the man. “Who are you?”

“Mark Lancaster,” the man replied.

Abigail turned to Hall. “How can we be sure?”

Hall nodded and walked into the cell to help him up. “John Hall.” He shook his hand. “Nice to meet you, Sir.”

“Follow us,” Tiffany said, as she started walking. Hall and Mark walked past Abigail. Hall mouthed two words Abigail was hoping he’d say: it’s him. Abigail caught up with Tiffany and then, started thinking, trying to piece together the puzzle. They were half way up the stairs when Abigail realized the answer to all of her questions.

She stopped and grabbed Tiffany’s arm. “It’s because of me.”

“What was?”

“All of it.” She ran up the stairs.

Steel closed his phone and walked over to Dark Arrow. “They couldn’t find it. We need to get her out of here.”

“Will she make it to a hospital?”

“As long as we don’t run into any delays.”

“How do we move her without hurting her?”

“Don’t worry about that. Just carry her outside and I’ll have Shawn bring the chopper around.”

“Got it.” He picked up Dark Vengeance. Abigail entered the room and held the door for them. As the door closed, Whitney looked at Abigail.

“Why did you have dad locked up down stairs?”

“It’s the small things that always come in handy,” Whitney said.

“All of this…it’s because of me, isn’t it?”

Whitney smiled.

“You found out I knew dad cheated on you, so instead of acting like a normal mom, you tried to kill me in the mine. And when that plan back fired, you replaced dad. But when Dark Vengeance started poking around the Lancasters, you used Caster to control Sam and tried to kill her. Then, you kept trying to kill her, until you succeeded. Once you did, you still weren’t happy because I was still fighting.”

Abigail stared at her, looking for some kind of response. “Then, when you started killing cops, you sent Danny to kill Sam because you knew he wouldn’t do it. So, you’ve got Sam at your mercy and dad in your back pocket…until Dark Vengeance came back and reminded us why we called ourselves heroes in the first place.”

“And why is that?”

“Because this city needs protected from people like you. Did I leave anything out?”

“Only the reason for why I did it.”

“The reason why is because you never wanted me in the first place.”

“Mostly right. But, you’re better at this than I thought,” Whitney said. “Too bad you didn’t figure this out sooner.” Abigail’s anger took over. She ran over to Whitney and put her hands around her neck. Abigail’s hands changed to Rainbow Crystal as a bright light covered them.

A spark shot out from the light, sending Abigail flying across the room. The Crystal Tree disappeared, releasing Whitney from its grip.

Dark Arrow and Steel stepped outside as every Eel turned to water. The helicopter landed as Foreshadow ran up to them. Steel told him what happened as he helped Dark Arrow get Dark Vengeance into the helicopter. Foreshadow saw Tiffany at the door, with Mark Lancaster, as the helicopter flew away.

He ran over to Tiffany and hugged her. She told him about Mark and the fact that Abigail’s still inside.

“Wait,” he said. “You left Abigail and Whitney in the same room together, alone?” Tiffany nodded. Foreshadow ran inside and burst through the door. He saw Abigail sitting in the corner. “Abby!” He ran to her. “Are you okay?”

“Is Rebbeca?”

“She will be. After Bryan and Shawn left with her in the chopper, Sam hopped in a police car and he and David took off.”

“Do you think they’ll make it?”

“Sam promised he’d break every traffic law. But are you okay?”

“Yeah.”

Steel walked in.

“Crystals: form.” Her skin transformed and she stood up.

“You two can go,” Steel said. “I’ll take it from here.” Foreshadow and The Crystal Girl walked outside and sat down on the steps.

Tiffany came over to them and sat down. “Just so you know, John left. He’s just gone, without a trace.”

“Okay, thanks,” Abigail said.

“So, what do we-”

“Drake, just shut up and kiss me.”

He pulled her close to him and kissed her.
