Chapter 1 (The Break Out)
I woke up to the sound of screaming and fighting. War. In the town I lived in, nobody was free, and we all lived in a constant fear of War. Our own government was putting us in danger. Deadly danger.
“Honey, wake up we need to go!”
“What’s happening?”
“Just run, and don’t look back.”
I got out of bed and me and my mom ran out the back door of our home. People were fighting everywhere. It was unbelievable but not surprising. We ran until we found somewhere to hide. My mom hid me inside an old shed in the middle of the woods.
“Stay here. I’ll come back and find you.”
“Wait where are you going?”
“Their looking for you.”
“Who? Mom, what’s happening?”
“Just stay here.”
My mom went running back into the town as I watched her. “Mom!” I screamed out. She disappeared into the smoke and fire. The sight of my mom running back into the war brought tears to my eyes. I couldn’t see her anymore. As I sat down on the dirty floor of the shed crying I saw a shadow run past the window on the shed. “Mom?” I asked. It ran past again. I stood up to look out the window. I looked for a long time and didn’t see anything. As I went to sit back down my body got hot and tingly. I didn’t know what was happening. I fell to the floor, and just like that I blacked out.
When I woke up my vision was blurry. I couldn’t even tell what was going on around me. But then I realized, I was being carried by someone through the war. But it wasn’t my mom.
As I was being carried I could see the bloody scene of people who had been killed. Buildings were being burnt down. After seeing all that, I couldn’t think about anything except my mom. Was she even still alive, I thought.
I was put onto the back of a truck, but nobody else. Just me. As I tried taking a better look around my body still felt weak. I could barely move, and I was tied up. I blacked out again.
