Chapter 16: Jungle Biome - walled city

“Good job getting a prisoner from the desert biome. We have been in discussion with her for a few hours now and the information she has been...persuaded to share is disturbing. It seems that the blizzard and desert biome are conspiring together against us. The blizzard people intend to take over our biome because they want a warmer climate to live in. I had hoped to keep this between us and the desert biome and settle differences quietly. There has never been a conflict that has involved all of the biomes before.” He paused and adjusted his glasses. “However this news leaves me no choice. You all will go to the cave.blizzard and aquatic biome and convince them to stand with us in the coming conflict. If we have enough strength hopefully the desert biome will back off and we won’t have any casualties from this senseless dispute. Out of all of these biomes our main target is the aquatic biome since they share a border with all biomes. If the aquatic king refuses to back us you will kill him.” He made eye contact with each of them before he continued. “This is a secret mission and you will tell no one outside of this room the information I have shared with you. As far as the rest of the biome knows we are just gearing up for a potential conflict. You will start with the cave biome, then move on to the blizzard and end with the aquatic. If things go badly with the aquatic I don’t want the other biomes to hear about it before you get a chance to sway them to our side. Oh and Terra? The prisoner shared some interesting news. Your brother is the leader of the desert biome. I would hate for him to get killed in a senseless war because he couldn’t be convinced to stand down wouldn’t you ?” He smirked at her. “You will leave in two days. That should be more than enough time for you all to rest. You are dismissed.” He turned to his stack of paperwork and started shuffling papers dismissing them absently. Terra,Daniel and Dexter turned and left the room silently.

The world was spinning. Terra couldn’t believe what she’d just been told. Her brother was the leader of the desert biome? So he’d been the one giving the order to attack their home ? She sat down heavily on the couch in her apartment.

“I don’t even know what’s what anymore. Everytime I try to be positive something else always happens. I just learned he was alive and now he’s an evil mastermind on top of that? This is ridiculous. I’m half convinced to go over there and slap some sense into him. What happened to him to make him hate our home? The place where we had such a happy childhood?” She dropped her head into her hands and tried to calm down. She felt a pressure on the couch beside her.

“I don’t know what he went through that has made him this way. But I do know that you would do anything for your brother and that the president knows that as well. Honestly the conflict with the desert biome has been going on a while now. I’m not surprised he finally decided to try to recruit allies. I am shocked that he would assaiante a leader of another biome to do it. But I guess it will be us doing that part.” Dexter mused beside her. Terra let out a snort of laughter at his casual tone.

“I don’t think I can do this. I’ve never taken a human life before and I never planned to.”

“Well if it makes you feel any better they don’t look human, they have gills, and webbing between their fingers and toes. I’ve heard the webbing on their fingers is retractable so they look a bit more human sometimes. They also have small sharp teeth that can inject poison into their opponents so it’s a great thing we are both immune.” He responded cheerfully.

Terra looked at him out of the corner of her eyes with a bewildered expression. He noticed. “I’m just trying to make it a little easier. I think the president is right about one thing though. If we do this and the power of the aquatic biome goes to the president then your brother will have no choice but to stand down. So in a roundabout way you’ll be saving his life by doing this.” Terra closed her eyes tightly for a moment and focused on her breathing trying to slow it down before she answered.

“You’re right. If I have to do this in order to help save my brother than I will. Hopefully the cave and blizzard biomes agree to join with us. Maybe we won’t have to go to the aquatic biome at all.”

Dexters smile dropped slightly. “I think we both know he wants us to go there whether or not the other two say yes or not.”

Terra sighed and leaned back into the couch. “That’s what I was afraid of.” She muttered to herself as she tried to mentally prepare herself for the coming ordeal. At least dexter was talking to her again. When’d left the president’s office Daniel had left to take care of something. Terra and dexter walked to her apartment. She was so overwhelmed at the bomb that the president dropped on her that she didn’t even notice he’d stayed with her until she opened the door to her apartment.

She turned to look at him. She found him looking at her with a concerenced expresion. “I feel like this is just the beginning of assignments like this.”

“It could be. Or this could be the first and last one. Either way from the battle that we saw on the border we know that its past the time for talking and negoteting. You care about Tyler and I care about you, so that means I care what and who you do as well. So basically this is just as important to me as it is to you. I know that the past few weeks things have been different between us but ignoring all of that I am still your best friend.” He paused and grabbed her hand and held it to his chest. “And you are mine. Never forget that.”

Terra gaze landed on her hand pressed to his chest. She couldn’t feel his heartbeat but she imagined that she could. She realized that she would do anything to protect that heart, that she loved him with the same feriousity that she loved her brother. Her gaze rose to meet his and she smiled. “Thank you.” She responded quietly. Dexter smiled at her. “It’s time you got some sleep, I know you’re exhausted.” Terra rolled her eyes slowly relaxing as she felt them settling into their old roles again.

Jordan was exhausted. They’d arrived that morning and after they met with the president and the blizzard hunters were assigned rooms everyone was told to sleep the trip off. He’d woken up because he felt that something was off. He couldn’t explain but the hairs on the back of his neck were standing up. He slowly slipped out of bed and hurriedly put on clothes and donned his sword. He crept to the door of his room and slowly opened it. He stopped and listened for a moment.everything was silent so he walked into the dark living room.

“What are you doing?” female voice cut through the darkness making him jump and draw his sword in defense.

“Holy crap, mia why would you scare me like that?” Jordan exclaimed as he hastily put his sword away.

“I’m just sitting on the couch. You’re the one whos sneaking around in the middle of night for some reason.” Mias voice was heavy with annoyance.

Jordan glared at her.“When did you even get back?”

“This morning. I’ve been sleeping all day. Can’t get back to sleep so i’m just sitting here thinking about the past week.”

“I would love to sit and talk with you and you know I would usually but right now you need to get your sword and come with me. Something seriously bad is about to go down.”

“How do you know?

“I just have a feeling. Please trust me.”

Mia stood up immediately and went into her room to grab her gear. She was back within minutes strapped up and ready to go . “If you truly feel that something bad is going on then let’s go check it out.”

Jordan paused for a moment and hugged her. “Thank you.” He whispered into her hair as they embraced. “Bleh, come on let’s go. We can paint our toe nails and talk about how much we love each other later. We’ve been best friends for years. It’s not going to change tonight.”

Jordan laughed as he turned and headed for the door of the apartment.

As they crossed the threshold and went outside a large boom blew them back into their apartment.

“What the fuck was that?” Mia exclaimed as she hit the wall. Jordan stumbled and barely managed not to be slammed into the wall himself. “Are you okay?” He yelled as he turned and headed back to where she’d fallen. He pulled her up by the hand. “Im fine. Looks like you were right. Lets go.” She grabbed her sword from where it fell when she was thrown and ran towards the door. Jordan laughed as he followed her through the door into a melee between an enormous beast and the cities hunters.
