The disease
The outbreak washed over humanity before we knew what was coming.
We didn’t know what had happened, where did it started or how it began, but once we noticed it was already too late. And we were dealt with a force we never prepared for.
Of course a cure was placed in order. Humans have went through great efforts trying to find a vaccine to stop the spreading. Endless amounts of research, and tests were invested to save ourselves from our fall but, in the end, it all proved pointless. No matter what we did, how much money we threw at doctors, how much time they put in, it wasn’t enough to save ourselves from the impending doom to come. Even when countries banded together and difference were set aside. For once humanity worked side by side, battling against a new enemy that had arisen and threatens to destroy us all.
But it had all been in vain. The disease kept getting stronger and more complex, spreading a lot faster than the chances of ever seeing a cure, until it was scraped off the table entirely, and protecting the last remnants of people left on this planet became a whole new focus..
Camps with high defense mechanisms were built, military equipment upgraded, martial law placed and so much more. The government did what they could to keep us safe. To protect us from the monsters that live outside our walls.
Infected products of the virus called Nyx Syndrome. At first the symptoms were a no biggie, which is exactly how the disease slipped underneath our radar. But they grew worse the longer it stayed within their host. Pushing them to do things even science could not explain. From sensitive exposure to sunlight to cannibalistic behaviors like drinking blood and eating raw hearts, then to greater powers no human could ever achieve. At first some assumed it was a serial murder with a few loose screws in their heads, then as the police dug deeper, assumptions turned into a dark cult surrounded around blood sacrifices, but the hole went further than it planned. Then it came out. A species greater than that of our own was instantly birthed from a strong pathogen.. Vampires, demons, servants of the night whatever names you can think of we put a name on them. It almost sound unrealistic and unscientific to label them a name that was born from fairy tales and folklore, but there was no other explanation. Their behavior is vampiric, the symptoms described nothing more than just that.. It was like fantasy brought forth into reality.
Nobody understood what had happened nor how it happened. Generations after the outbreak, what is left of humanity is protected by man made walls. With the cure, our only hope of salvation, now gone from our hands, we only have ourselves to rely on. To keep ourselves going...
But I wonder... How long will that last?
