The Vampire's Gem

The night is filled with their shadows

Creatures of unspeakable horror
They feed on their victims blood
They are cruel and they are fierce
With eyes as cold as the night
Vampires rule with an iron fist

I run fast with it clenched in my fist
A gem as dark as the shadows
I could barely see it in the night
All I could think were thoughts of horror
The branches hitting my face were fierce
Scratching my skin and drawing blood

Now covered by my own blood
I slow down and open my fist
Vampires, growing closer, are fierce
My body was hidden in the shadows
But it did nothing to hide my horror
All I could do was hide in the night

I continued to hide in the night
I knew they could smell my blood
Watching them run past me filled me with horror
To keep from screaming, I bit my fist
I knew I had to keep to the shadows
My thoughts turned fierce

To keep from falling, my feet were fierce
I ran so fast through that night
Remembering to keep to the shadows
All I could hear was the pounding of my blood
I felt it still clenched in my fist
I could no longer feel the horror

With a plan in my head, I felt no horror
My successful smile turned fierce
I shifted the black gem to my other fist
I continued to run through the night
With my speed, they might smell my blood
Even if I was hiding in the shadows

My fierce thoughts were filled with shadows
Without horror, there was no fear in my blood
With the gem in my fist, I continued home though the night

Tiffany Thomson: This story is not something I would normally pick up and read but I'm so glad I did, I wasn't able to put it down and my husband was yelling at me at 3am to put it down and go to bed (just waited for him to doze back off before picking it back up) I really hope Natalie brings out another book eit...

Jenn Deering: This is a go-to story for when you're needing a little happiness in your life. It's well-crafted, and characters are true to their show-selves. The pace is right, there are minimal grammatical errors, and the plot is fresh.

dd1226: I love reading about other countries and I think this story about Cambodia after Polpot creates awareness of the tragedy that happened there and the actions of the U.N. to hold elections. The heroine of the story is easy to relate to, a modern, middleaged woman looking for an adventure, wanting t...

Nadine Willard: I loved this story so much! I generally can't stand super girly romance stories, but this one was so relatable! I could not stop reading this, I read it straight through!! I wish this was a series, not just a single story 😊

CookieMonster911: The story overall was an adventure that is appealing to any age. The way the characters develop adds a more human characteristic to the novel. The writing style itself is amazing because you can learn every character's thoughts and emotions. The awkward love triangle and jerk moments adds to the ...

Sandra Estrada: I loved every minute of it and I thank my lucky stars that brought me to the story, it's been a whirlwind of emotions, plot twist after plot twist but I never got tired of them. Maria Appkova: I enjoyed the plot and the idea. and the need to change her awesome idea to save others people in city. and romance in the story involved. just romantic btw her and henri. Good work.

Jean Tryon: As a beta, I found this story outstanding!! Plot, grammar, phraseology, etc Rachel gives us it all. She takes the story into the future from where due South ends. She is an exacting and thoughtful author.

Usagi Kita: This story is emotional from beginning to end. You get to watch the characters struggle and grow, maturing in different ways so that they come to be the people they are meant to be. Elizabeth Robbins: 4.5 starsAs far as apocalypse stories go, this one took a new direction. I'm glad someone finally addressed the need for a vampire apocalypse! This is sort of a multi-genre festival of delights. With hints of forced societies, vamps, hunters, romance, apocalypse, government conspiracy, and thrill...
