Chapter 37: Italy - Birthday Surprise

The next few weeks were hectic. Mia and Dave were both so busy with work. During the day they didn’t get much time to talk since Mia mostly worked on-site of the hotel and he wasn’t always there, but they manage to send each other some texts. The past days she noticed he kept coming up with excuses to stay onsite. They went on a couple of dates. And usually stayed at her house. One night she finally had it in her to tell him about her previous engagement. They were in the balcony staring at the night sky.

“Dave. I need to tell you something.” She turned around, still locked in his embrace and looked in his beautiful coffee brown eyes. He looks at her curiosity in his eyes, but didn’t say anything. He let her talk without interruptions. “I was engaged to someone. I was together with him for 5 years and when he proposed I said yes. Even though I wasn’t sure. Because seeing my parents’ marriage broke all my hopes for a marriage of my own. Not long after I found out that he was cheating on me with my best friend. I can’t even call her that because she seems to hate me from the very start of our friendship. That’s why I was so scared to try this with you. My heart couldn’t take another blow like that. But soon I realized that I was an idiot for comparing the two situations. You’re nothing like him and I realized that I never really loved him. Because you showed me what love really is.” Mia let it all out in one breath. “I know it’s stupid to talk to you about my ex but I had to get this off my chest.”

He pulled her in a hug and placed a peck on her nose. “I’m glad you told me. You ex was an idiot for letting you go. But I’m happy he did or I would have never met you. Some people join you in your journey to help you reach your final destination. He was there to help you get to me. And I promise I will do everything in my power to keep you happy. And don't you tire that pretty mind of your's with issues that shouldn't concern us. that was the past and I am planning to spend my present and future with you. Something my mom always told me was 'learn from your past to make a better future.' I want to be with you and even if I have to spend an eternity trying to show you how much you mean to me, I'm not giving up. Because you're that important to me.” Butterflies fluttered in Mia's stomach upon hearing those words. A blush crept up her cheeks as a smile formed on her lips. She felt so lucky to have him and she felt her heart slipping away, but it didn't bother her. She knew he heart was safe in his hands, just like his was safe with her. They stood in silence looking up to the stars. “Mia...”

“hmm”

“I was thinking. Why don’t you move in with me?”

“What?”

“Look we spend the most nights together and I have to get up early to head home and change before coming to pick you up and head over to work. It would be easier if we stayed together. That way we can spend more time together. We basically live together anyway. So, what do you say?”

“I .. Uhm..” Mia looked up to him. The way he looked at her made her forget everything. With every passing second that she didn’t answer he felt she was going to say no which made his smile fall a little. “Okay” she finally answered. He pulled Mia in for a kiss and they stood there for a while. Mia smiled and hugged him. She realized how comfortable she was with the pace their relationship was moving with. That night Mia packed all her things and they went to his house. Dave had a beautiful big house. It’s something you would dream of living in. Mia unpacked and settled in.

Mia found out that Dave’s birthday was approaching so she planned something special for him. On the 14th of November she returned early from work and started preparing everything.

When Dave returned home after a tiring day he noticed the lights were dimmed.

“Tesoro?” he called out to her while following the path that was made with candles. It lead to the back of his house to the pool area. Next to the pool there was a table set up for two. There were balloons everywhere and fairy lights.

“Happy birthday, McDreamy.” Mia said as she hugged him.

“Thank you, Tesoro” he responded while leaning in for a kiss. “McDreamy. I like that.”

“Yeah. It sounds better than bunny.” Dave laughed at Mia’s remark.

“Go freshen up then we’ll have dinner.” He nodded and stole a kiss before going away. He took a quick shower and put on comfortable clothing before joining Mia. He was taken away with her surprise. This was the first time someone did something so special for him. Mia was waiting for him by the pool. The way she stood there was just angelic. The lights reflecting from the water made her light colored dress stand out. Dave walked to her and embraced her from behind.

“Non sai cosa mi fai. (You don’t know what you do to me).” Dave whispered while brushing his lips on her ears. He heard her suck in a breath. She turned around and put her arms around his neck. Dave stared in those beautiful blue orbs, even in the scarce light he could see the happiness they held. His eyes wandered to those plump lips and he leaned in wanting to taste them. Every time he kissed her it still felt like the first time they kissed. They parted their lips but were in the same position for a moment with their eyes closed.

“Let’s eat before it turns cold.” She whispered when she opened her eyes. He nodded and placed a peck on her nose, which made her smile. They walked over to the table and sat down. The table was filled with various dishes like Tangy Greek salad, a tender roast with potatoes, carrots, and onions and also rigatoni pasta with chicken. Their meal was accompanied with a bottle of red wine. After they filled their stomachs with the delicious foods Mia brought out a cake. Dave blew out the candle on the dark forest chocolate cake while keeping his eyes locked with hers and cut the cake.

"What did you wish for?" Mia asked as she was feeding him a piece of cake and he bit her finger gently.

"You know I can't tell you Tesoro. But I think you know what I wished for." Dave answered with a wink that made Mia blush.

They sat on the side of the pool with their feet in the water. They took the cake and wine and enjoyed it while talking and laughing. Dave loved the way she laughed and the way her eyes lit up when she does. It makes him love her more. Dave didn't know when he started loving her, but once he did he never wanted to let her go. After a while Dave slid into the water and stood in front of her.

“What are you doing?” Mia laughed.

“I want to swim.” He said while putting his hands on her waist and lifting her in the water. He lowered her against him and kissed her. He just loved doing that. He broke the kiss and stared in her eyes. Every time he did that he felt himself getting lost in them.

“I love you.” he said to her in his husky voice and he saw her cheeks turning pink. This was the first time he said it to her. And the way she looked at him told him that she felt it too.

“Me too.” looking in his eyes she lost herself and when he said those three words she knew she felt the same way. But for some unknown reason she couldn’t say it back. They continued fooling around in the pool and it was one of the most romantic nights they shared.

With passing time they settled in their own routine. They worked, came home and spend time together. Sometimes they didn’t even talk they just enjoy each other’s company. Before she even realized it was December and Christmas was just around the corner.

“Uhm Tesoro you know Christmas is approaching. And I usually spend it with my family. So I was wondering. Would you like to spend the Christmas holidays with my family?”

Mia was speechless. He wanted her to meet his family. All these random thoughts were going through her head. What if they don’t like her. Or what if she does something stupid to piss them off. She looked at him and realized it would be selfish of her to keep him from his family during the holidays. She agreed, but was still nervous. Mia's nervousness with each day. But he kept assuring her everything would be okay. I really hope so.
