Chapter 1

I would say I'm actually the coolest person in the world, like no doubt, top notch. I'm pretty much just saying this because I'm standing on my very own pirate ship! Kind of...It's not technically mine. Yet. I have a perfectly good reason of stealing it though. I had a dream, when I was about ten, I wanted to be the most amazing person in the world like, the best. I know that sounds stupid, but I was always made fun of and was looked down on. See, kids thought I was weird because I wanted to time travel, but only Rarelings were allowed to and they thought I was crazy for wanting to be part of "that race".  Except I wouldn't look at them as a race, there were barely even a hundred of them. They were pretty rare, hence the name, but I guess I wanted to time travel so bad because I was one. Rarelings aren't creatures, they're human. Do you remember those comic books called X-Men from like eighty years ago? How they're all mutants? Rarelings are basically that, they're born with a "defect", they are born with powers. However, not everyone is born with a different power, everyone has the same one. Only they weren't born just able to fly a time machine and regenerate when they die. This isn't Doctor Who...yes, that show's still on. Rarelings were born with the ability to see things, like they can feel the air around them and can taste it and appreciate it more. They can also sense something is coming and everything becomes oddly eerie. By coming I mean like a storm, a death, a late period.

Rarelings also can (if allowed) access your mind to see your past, present, and future. I haven't ever had the desire to do that, but that also means once Rarelings discover their powers, they have an accident. They break their arm, leg, trip and fall, cut themselves, etc. When this happens they pass out for about three seconds and suddenly know the history about the whole universe. It's pleasant at the age of five... Anyway to sum it up Rarelings can chose to time travel and train to do it. They are discriminated against and it's best to keep it a secret unless you really trust someone.

Now back to me, because the present is more important than the not so distant past. Oh! Also people call being a Rareling a "disease" because it came from another planet and it's kind of like the plaque, but more hidden and less deadly. So here I am on a pirate ship thinking about all this when I should be flying away, except I can't steal it now because it's four and I promised my friend wwe would go shopping before I had to be home for dinner. Okay, I may only be sixteen, but it's my dream to do this as soon as I graduate in four days. I just can't tell my mom, brother, or best friend. Or the police...Technically I'm not stealing anything valuable, I'm stealing a ship from pirates, so technically I'm becoming a pirate, right? I contemplate this as I jump from the rafters back onto the ground that sweeps across the ocean. Sadly, land doesn't exist anymore. Years ago water took over again, luckily we had flying cars, ships, and planes...duh. It was easy to start building the new land on the ocean years before the whole world became water. A scientist noticed it early and they began building, luckily this was a couple hundred years before I was born, so my whole life has been on water.

I guess that's the whole reason of me wanting to time travel though, I want to be able to see what the world looked like before all this. "Ren!" I turn at the sound of my name as I was walking through the market in the middle of New York to the ninth power. Yes that's actually the name of the city, that's what all the cities are called like, New Jersey to the ninth power, New Ohio to the ninth power, New Denver to the ninth power. Like I mean every single city, state, county, continent has New and to the ninth power. I mean the world is basically exactly the same as it was before, except no grass and we live in boxes stacked on top of each other, it kind of looks like apartment buildings, but less symmetrical. "Hey, Lily." My best friend comes running towards me and I wince as she barrels into me to hug me as tight as she possibly can and I refrain from punching her. "What are you up to? Please don't tell me you just came back from the shipyard again?" I shrugged as she had a deadpan expression her face.

"Not exactly..." I sheepishly grin at her and she immediately slapped my arm and I walked farther away from her and up to the next stand where they were selling sunglasses and other jewelry. "You were looking at...pirate ships?" Lily whispered the last part, afraid that someone might hear her, even though nothing would happen. Lily is always a little paranoid, I never really understood why. Lily knows about my crazy little dream, just not that I plan to make it happen and she doesn't know that I'm a Rareling. Only my brother knows because he was there when I passed out for those three seconds I was talking about. "Ren..." She trailed my name out until I looked at her with absurd looking glasses on, you know those big ones that are supposed to look clowny and too big for your head.  "What?" I shrugged at her turning back around putting the glasses back down and then smiled at the lady, who smiled back. I could tell she was smiling through pain though and my powers twitched, wanting to know more.

I started walking away from Lily as her and the women began to chat annoyingly about earrings or whatever. New York (Not even going to say to the ninth power thing) now pretty much looked exactly like the other New York, including lakes, statues, and the aroma. Like, no joke, we have the Statue of Liberty still. The only difference was that everything was a lot more orange and colorful. It looked run down, like oily and made to look old and built quickly. I know it is all just a way to show that our world could become what it used to before our 90th president made us realize Global Warming and we finally fixed ourselves. Plus the cities of New York were a lot cleaner, but there were still rats. I mean, homeless people, solved! They have a big building for people that don't have to pay, but it offers food and a bed and to help you find a job. They have one in every city and I actually love how it finally happened. "Hey! Don't walk away from me when I'm judging how you spend your free time!"

I chuckle as Lily runs up to walk with me again, "Lily, will you just stop and let me live my life." Lily scowls and interlocks her arm with mine as we turn the street and walk into one of our favorite boutiques, well hers anyway. "No, best friends don't not tell you what they think you should do! Plus how would you even time travel if not all pirates are Rarelings." Again she whispered the last three words she said and rolled my eyes as I picked up a hat. "Who said you had to be a Rareling to time travel?" So, even though Rarelings were looked down on, you could only time travel if you were one, it's illegal otherwise. Hence why they're called pirates, they learn how to time travel illegally and then steal boats and do it themselves. You don't need a time machine to time travel, you can do it with any vehicle. It's all with using your mind and reaching a certain part of your brain, of course Rarelings are the best at it because they can access more of their brain than others.

Lily gasped seconds later after not paying attention to me and then suddenly realizing what I said. She turned to me and stared in shock at my words, "That's illegal! Are you saying you want to be one of them...like a pirate?" For second my heart jumped as I thought she was going to say Rareling and then I got more scared because I thought she realized from my face that I thought that. Of course though I played it off with a smirk and a wink. "Lauren Logan Wolff! Are you-" Lily was cut off suddenly by a loud crash in the back and we both turned towards the back entrance right when someone screamed and a gun went off.
