Chapter ten: the dinner.
The dining room was grand. There was a long table with mossy green place mats. There were dishes and dishes of delicious-looking food on it. There were two plates set up, along with two sets of silverware and cups.
Azul was already sitting down at the head of the table. I took a seat next to him, nodded, and began to eat.
The food was scrumptious. There were buttered rolls and Italian salad with vegetable soup and cherry ice cream for dessert. I began thinking that Azul had personal chefs.
But then I began thinking about the fact that, birds aside, Azul was alone in his house. There was nobody there, even though he had so many bedrooms. I had gone exploring earlier and saw that there were bedrooms fit for children and playrooms. Why would Azul need such a big house if there was nobody to live in it?
Then it was time for bed. Early the next morning Azul would redo any makeup that came off and then we would set off to the circus before it left Australia.
“Are you coming with us to Switzerland?” I asked Azul as I rose from the table. Before Mr. Gone fired me, I had overheard the rest of the circus crew deciding which place they’d go next. But Azul shook his head. I opened my mouth to protest but he held up a hand.
I sunk into the bed and pulled the covers up to my chin. I fell asleep almost immediately.
The next morning I put on my own clothes because if I put on Azul’s then that would be kind of stealing. After Azul redid my makeup we set off to the circus.
