Chapter 12: the coma

The pain made my vision go black. I felt myself falling towards the ground. I felt body collide with the concrete floor, but I felt no pain from the impact. My head struck the ground and bounced off and fell back onto the cold, concrete floors.

Alpha Eli

I was in the middle of telling the pack about Rae, when something happened to Zenya. Through our mate link, I could tell something was wrong. I stopped in the middle of my sentence, the pack looked at me curiously. Some looked at me with a worried look. I dashed through the crates. and boxes, looking for Zenya.

The tall stacks of crates and boxes cast shadows across the floor and walls, making it dark with only a small sliver of sunlight pouring into the darkness. In my mind, my life was the shadows, and Zenya the small sliver of sunlight in the shadows.

I ran through the warehouse. I had completely forgotten about my pack as I ran, looking for Zenya. Suddenly, my mate bond with Zenya dimmed, till it was just a small string of a bond.

I continued to get more and more worried about Zenya as I ran. Finally I found her. She was laying on the ground, her eyes closed and her body motionless except for her breathing.

I ran to her and knelt down beside her. I checked her pulse, it was normal for a werewolf. I picked her up and carried her to the pack infirmary. When I got there, I set her on a bed and knelt beside the bed. I worriedly checked everything I knew how to. She seemed to be perfectly stable, but she wouldn't wake.

I sat down, defeated. I stood up again and grabbed a chair. I dragged it over to the bed and sat down. I rested my elbows on my knees and locked my fingers together. I stared at her, worried about her. The mate bond continued to dim until it was only a slight sliver.

I was so worried, that I didn't hear anyone approaching. Then I felt a hand on my shoulder. I looked up.

I walked into a room. I saw Alpha Eli sitting on a chair beside a bed. On the bed lay a girl. She was beautiful. She had long, black hair that fell over her shoulders, her hair was knotted. She had a tanned skin tone and was slender. Alpha Eli sat beside her bed and was looking at yet with a worried expression on his face.

Feeling sorry for him, I walked up behind him and put a hand on his shoulder. He looked up at me, he suddenly seemed drained of life. His normal tanned color, was now a pale color. His eyes were red-rimed, though his face had no tear streaks. I could tell he was holding back tears.

He looked at me for a moment before turning back to the girl. I didn't want to intrude, but I wondered who this girl was. She made one of the most powerful alphas worried.

"Who-who is that?" I said, motioning to the girl on the bed.

"Her name is Zenya, she's my mate." He replied, his voice hoarse.

"What's wrong with her?" I asked him, feeling even for sorry for him now.

"I don't know, that's the problem." He said, putting his head in his hands.

"May I check her?" I asked.

"Why not." He said, his voice muffled by his hands.

I walked to the other side of the bed. I did. A few things that I had learned from our healing wolf back at my old pack. After I was done I felt horribly sorry for Alpha Eli.

"I hate to tell you this, but she's in a coma." I told him. He shook his head in his hands.

"I just found her, now she's gone." I said, more to himself than me.

"Is she a werewolf." I asked. He shook his head yes. "Has she been bitten by anything?"

He shook his head, then his head shot up and he looked at me. "Yes, actually. Earlier today, she was bitten by.... by a vampire." His voice faded towards the end as realization dawned on him.

"She is probably going to become a vampire-werewolf mix." I told him. "If she survives." I added quietly.

"What do you mean if she survives?" He shouted, his eyes boring into me.

"This a painful process. The different DNAs work against each other in her body, fighting each other." I told him dreadfully. "If they don't find a way to cope, she'll die."

"No, she can't die. She can't." He said miserably. He put his head in his hands again. I decided to let him be alone as he took in all the information.

Alpha Eli

Rae walked out of the room. I saw the door close between my fingers. The moment I heard the latch click, I let the tears come. Zenya couldn't die, she meant too much to me. I couldn't let her die.

EliMoon was also sad. I felt him crying too. I looked through my fingers at Zenya. She was still beautiful. Her chest rose and fell in a steady rhythm. I lifted my head out of my hands and locked my fingers together. I rested my chin on my interlocked hands.

The only sign she was still alive, was her breathing. I stayed awake all night. She never showed a sign of waking. Eventually sleep overtook me. I fell asleep with my head on her bed.

I could sense Alpha Eli nearby, but everything was black. I couldn't move any part of my body, but I was still breathing. I tried to open my eye to look at Alpha Eli, but my body didn't respond. All remained still and dark.

It was if I was lost in the woods, and the only way out was to fight against the very shadows of the trees. For me, that fight was for Shaneel, Alpha Eli, SadieDash, and even the werewolf pack that I didn't know much. I fought for Luna, who was just barely hanging onto life.

The shadows towered over me, turning the worl dark. I stumbled blindly, trying to find any light. No matter how long I walked, or how long a searched, I was still surrounded in darkness.

I saw nothing but darkness and shadows as I stumbled around. What's happening to me? I wondered to myself. I expected SadieDash to answer me, but I could hardly feel her conscious. Though she was in my head. Then I collapsed in despair and was almost up emediatly again. As I had sat down, I had seen a tiny sliver of light.
