Acts Chapter 12

1 Now about that time Herod the king stretched forth his handsto vex certain of the church.

2 And he killed James the brother of John with the sword.

3 And because he saw it pleased the Jewshe proceeded furtherto take Peter also.Then were the days of unleavened bread.

4 And when he had apprehended himhe put him in prisonanddelivered him to four quaternions of soldiers to keep him intending after Easter to bring him forth to the people.

5 Peter therefore was kept in prisonbut prayer was madewithout ceasing of the church unto God for him.

6 And when Herod would have brought him forththe same nightPeter was sleeping between two soldiersbound with twochainsand the keepers before the door kept the prison.

7 Andbeholdthe angel of the Lord came upon himand a lightshined in the prisonand he smote Peter on the sideandraised him upsayingArise up quickly. And his chains felloff from his hands.

8 And the angel said unto himGird thyselfand bind on thysandals. And so he did. And he saith unto himCast thygarment about theeand follow me.

9 And he went outand followed himand wist not that it wastrue which was done by the angelbut thought he saw a vision.

10 When they were past the first and the second wardthey cameunto the iron gate that leadeth unto the citywhich opened tothem of his own accordand they went outand passed onthrough one streetand forthwith the angel departed from him.

11 And when Peter was come to himselfhe saidNow I know of asuretythat the LORD hath sent his angeland hath deliveredme out of the hand of Herodand from all the expectation ofthe people of the Jews.

12 And when he had considered the thinghe came to the house ofMary the mother of Johnwhose surname was Markwhere manywere gathered together praying.

13 And as Peter knocked at the door of the gatea damsel came tohearkennamed Rhoda.

14 And when she knew Peter s voiceshe opened not the gate forgladnessbut ran inand told how Peter stood before thegate.

15 And they said unto herThou art mad. But she constantlyaffirmed that it was even so. Then said theyIt is his angel.

16 But Peter continued knockingand when they had opened thedoorand saw himthey were astonished.

17 But hebeckoning unto them with the hand to hold their peace declared unto them how the Lord had brought him out of theprison. And he saidGo shew these things unto Jamesand tothe brethren. And he departedand went into another place.

18 Now as soon as it was daythere was no small stir among thesoldierswhat was become of Peter.

19 And when Herod had sought for himand found him notheexamined the keepersand commanded that they should be put todeath. And he went down from Judaea to Caesareaand thereabode.

20 And Herod was highly displeased with them of Tyre and Sidonbut they came with one accord to himandhaving made Blastusthe king s chamberlain their frienddesired peacebecausetheir country was nourished by the king s country.

21 And upon a set day Herodarrayed in royal apparelsat uponhis throneand made an oration unto them.

22 And the people gave a shoutsayingIt is the voice of a godand not of a man.

23 And immediately the angel of the Lord smote himbecause hegave not God the gloryand he was eaten of wormsand gave upthe ghost.

24 But the word of God grew and multiplied.

25 And Barnabas and Saul returned from Jerusalemwhen they hadfulfilled their ministryand took with them Johnwhosesurname was Mark.
