Acts Chapter 16

1 Then came he to Derbe and Lystraandbeholda certaindisciple was therenamed Timotheusthe son of a certainwomanwhich was a Jewessand believedbut his father was aGreek

2 Which was well reported of by the brethren that were at Lystraand Iconium.

3 Him would Paul have to go forth with himand took andcircumcised him because of the Jews which were in thosequartersfor they knew all that his father was a Greek.

4 And as they went through the citiesthey delivered them thedecrees for to keepthat were ordained of the apostles andelders which were at Jerusalem.

5 And so were the churches established in the faithandincreased in number daily.

6 Now when they had gone throughout Phrygia and the region ofGalatiaand were forbidden of the Holy Ghost to preach theword in Asia

7 After they were come to Mysiathey assayed to go intoBithyniabut the Spirit suffered them not.

8 And they passing by Mysia came down to Troas.

9 And a vision appeared to Paul in the nightThere stood a manof Macedoniaand prayed himsayingCome over intoMacedoniaand help us.

10 And after he had seen the visionimmediately we endeavouredto go into Macedoniaassuredly gathering that the Lord hadcalled us for to preach the gospel unto them.

11 Therefore loosing from Troaswe came with a straight courseto Samothraciaand the next day to Neapolis

12 And from thence to Philippiwhich is the chief city of thatpart of Macedoniaand a colonyand we were in that cityabiding certain days.

13 And on the sabbath we went out of the city by a river sidewhere prayer was wont to be madeand we sat downand spakeunto the women which resorted thither.

14 And a certain woman named Lydiaa seller of purpleof thecity of Thyatirawhich worshipped Godheard uswhose heartthe Lord openedthat she attended unto the things which werespoken of Paul.

15 And when she was baptizedand her householdshe besought ussayingIf ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lordcomeinto my houseand abide there. And she constrained us.

16 And it came to passas we went to prayera certain damselpossessed with a spirit of divination met uswhich broughther masters much gain by soothsaying

17 The same followed Paul and usand criedsayingThese menare the servants of the most high Godwhich shew unto us theway of salvation.

18 And this did she many days. But Paulbeing grievedturnedand said to the spiritI command thee in the name of JesusChrist to come out of her. And he came out the same hour.

19 And when her masters saw that the hope of their gains wasgonethey caught Paul and Silasand drew them into themarketplace unto the rulers

20 And brought them to the magistratessayingThese menbeingJewsdo exceedingly trouble our city

21 And teach customswhich are not lawful for us to receiveneither to observebeing Romans.

22 And the multitude rose up together against themand themagistrates rent off their clothesand commanded to beatthem.

23 And when they had laid many stripes upon themthey cast theminto prisoncharging the jailor to keep them safely

24 Whohaving received such a chargethrust them into the innerprisonand made their feet fast in the stocks.

25 And at midnight Paul and Silas prayedand sang praises untoGodand the prisoners heard them.

26 And suddenly there was a great earthquakeso that thefoundations of the prison were shakenand immediately all thedoors were openedand every one s bands were loosed.

27 And the keeper of the prison awaking out of his sleepandseeing the prison doors openhe drew out his swordand wouldhave killed himselfsupposing that the prisoners had beenfled.

28 But Paul cried with a loud voicesayingDo thyself no harmfor we are all here.

29 Then he called for a lightand sprang inand came tremblingand fell down before Paul and Silas

30 And brought them outand saidSirswhat must I do to besaved

31 And they saidBelieve on the Lord Jesus Christand thoushalt be savedand thy house.

32 And they spake unto him the word of the Lordand to all thatwere in his house.

33 And he took them the same hour of the nightand washed theirstripesand was baptizedhe and all hisstraightway.

34 And when he had brought them into his househe set meatbefore themand rejoicedbelieving in God with all hishouse.

35 And when it was daythe magistrates sent the serjeants sayingLet those men go.

36 And the keeper of the prison told this saying to PaulThemagistrates have sent to let you gonow therefore departandgo in peace.

37 But Paul said unto themThey have beaten us openlyuncondemnedbeing Romansand have cast us into prisonandnow do they thrust us out privilynay verilybut let themcome themselves and fetch us out.

38 And the serjeants told these words unto the magistratesandthey fearedwhen they heard that they were Romans.

39 And they came and besought themand brought them outanddesired them to depart out of the city.

40 And they went out of the prisonand entered into the house ofLydiaand when they had seen the brethrenthey comfortedthemand departed.
