Acts Chapter 22

1 Menbrethrenand fathershear ye my defence which I makenow unto you.

2And when they heard that he spake in the Hebrew tongue tothemthey kept the more silenceand he saith

3 I am verily a man which am a Jewborn in Tarsusa city inCiliciayet brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel and taught according to the perfect manner of the law of thefathersand was zealous toward Godas ye all are this day.

4 And I persecuted this way unto the deathbinding anddelivering into prisons both men and women.

5 As also the high priest doth bear me witnessand all theestate of the eldersfrom whom also I received letters untothe brethrenand went to Damascusto bring them which werethere bound unto Jerusalemfor to be punished.

6 And it came to passthatas I made my journeyand was comenigh unto Damascus about noonsuddenly there shone fromheaven a great light round about me.

7 And I fell unto the groundand heard a voice saying unto meSaulSaulwhy persecutest thou me

8 And I answeredWho art thouLordAnd he said unto meI amJesus of Nazarethwhom thou persecutest.

9 And they that were with me saw indeed the lightand wereafraidbut they heard not the voice of him that spake to me.

10 And I saidWhat shall I doLORDAnd the Lord said unto meAriseand go into Damascusand there it shall be told theeof all things which are appointed for thee to do.

11 And when I could not see for the glory of that lightbeingled by the hand of them that were with meI came intoDamascus.

12 And one Ananiasa devout man according to the lawhaving agood report of all the Jews which dwelt there

13 Came unto meand stoodand said unto meBrother Saulreceive thy sight. And the same hour I looked up upon him.

14 And he saidThe God of our fathers hath chosen theethatthou shouldest know his willand see that Just Oneandshouldest hear the voice of his mouth.

15 For thou shalt be his witness unto all men of what thou hastseen and heard.

16 And now why tarriest thouariseand be baptizedand washaway thy sinscalling on the name of the Lord.

17 And it came to passthatwhen I was come again to Jerusalemeven while I prayed in the templeI was in a trance

18 And saw him saying unto meMake hasteand get thee quicklyout of Jerusalemfor they will not receive thy testimonyconcerning me.

19 And I saidLordthey know that I imprisoned and beat inevery synagogue them that believed on thee

20 And when the blood of thy martyr Stephen was shedI also wasstanding byand consenting unto his deathand kept theraiment of them that slew him.

21 And he said unto meDepartfor I will send thee far henceunto the Gentiles.

22 And they gave him audience unto this wordand then lifted uptheir voicesand saidAway with such a fellow from theearthfor it is not fit that he should live.

23 And as they cried outand cast off their clothesand threwdust into the air

24 The chief captain commanded him to be brought into the castleand bade that he should be examined by scourgingthat hemight know wherefore they cried so against him.

25 And as they bound him with thongsPaul said unto thecenturion that stood byIs it lawful for you to scourge a manthat is a Romanand uncondemned

26 When the centurion heard thathe went and told the chiefcaptainsayingTake heed what thou doestfor this man is aRoman.

27 Then the chief captain cameand said unto himTell meartthou a RomanHe saidYea.

28 And the chief captain answeredWith a great sum obtained Ithis freedom. And Paul saidBut I was free born.

29 Then straightway they departed from him which should haveexamined himand the chief captain also was afraidafter heknew that he was a Romanand because he had bound him.

30 On the morrowbecause he would have known the certaintywherefore he was accused of the Jewshe loosed him from hisbandsand commanded the chief priests and all their councilto appearand brought Paul downand set him before them.
