Corinthians Chapter 14

Follow after charityand desire spiritual giftsbut ratherthat ye may prophesy.

For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not untomenbut unto Godfor no man understandeth himhowbeit inthe spirit he speaketh mysteries.

But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edificationandexhortationand comfort.

He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himselfbut hethat prophesieth edifieth the church.

I would that ye all spake with tongues but rather that yeprophesiedfor greater is he that prophesieth than he thatspeaketh with tonguesexcept he interpretthat the churchmay receive edifying.

Nowbrethrenif I come unto you speaking with tongueswhatshall I profit youexcept I shall speak to you either byrevelationor by knowledgeor by prophesyingor bydoctrine

And even things without life giving soundwhether pipe orharpexcept they give a distinction in the soundshow shallit be known what is piped or harped

For if the trumpet give an uncertain soundwho shall preparehimself to the battle

So likewise yeexcept ye utter by the tongue words easy to beunderstoodhow shall it be known what is spokenfor ye shallspeak into the air.

There areit may beso many kinds of voices in the world and none of them is without signification.

Therefore if I know not the meaning of the voiceI shall beunto him that speaketh a barbarianand he that speaketh shallbe a barbarian unto me.

Even so yeforasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual giftsseek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church.

Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray thathe may interpret.

For if I pray in an unknown tonguemy spirit prayethbut myunderstanding is unfruitful.

What is it thenI will pray with the spiritand I will praywith the understanding alsoI will sing with the spiritandI will sing with the understanding also.

Else when thou shalt bless with the spirithow shall he thatoccupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving ofthanksseeing he understandeth not what thou sayest

For thou verily givest thanks wellbut the other is notedified.

I thank my GodI speak with tongues more than ye all

Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with myunderstandingthat by my voice I might teach others also than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.

Brethrenbe not children in understandinghowbeit in malicebe ye childrenbut in understanding be men.

In the law it is writtenWith men of other tongues and otherlips will I speak unto this peopleand yet for all that willthey not hear mesaith the Lord.

Wherefore tongues are for a signnot to them that believebut to them that believe notbut prophesying serveth not forthem that believe notbut for them which believe.

If therefore the whole church be come together into one placeand all speak with tonguesand there come in those that areunlearnedor unbelieverswill they not say that ye are mad

But if all prophesyand there come in one that believeth not or one unlearnedhe is convinced of allhe is judged of all

And thus are the secrets of his heart made manifestand sofalling down on his face he will worship Godand report thatGod is in you of a truth.

How is it thenbrethrenwhen ye come togetherevery one ofyou hath a psalmhath a doctrinehath a tonguehath arevelationhath an interpretation. Let all things be doneunto edifying.

If any man speak in an unknown tonguelet it be by twoor atthe most by threeand that by courseand let one interpret.

But if there be no interpreterlet him keep silence in thechurchand let him speak to himselfand to God.

Let the prophets speak two or threeand let the other judge.

If any thing be revealed to another that sitteth bylet thefirst hold his peace.

For ye may all prophesy one by onethat all may learnandall may be comforted.

And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets.

For God is not the author of confusionbut of peaceas inall churches of the saints.

Let your women keep silence in the churchesfor it is notpermitted unto them to speakbut they are commanded to beunder obedience as also saith the law.

And if they will learn any thinglet them ask their husbandsat homefor it is a shame for women to speak in the church.

Whatcame the word of God out from youor came it unto youonly

If any man think himself to be a prophetor spirituallethim acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are thecommandments of the Lord.

But if any man be ignorantlet him be ignorant.

Whereforebrethrencovet to prophesyand forbid not tospeak with tongues.

Let all things be done decently and in order.
