Luke Chapter 2

1 And it came to pass in those daysthat there went out adecree from Caesar Augustus that all the world should betaxed.

2And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor ofSyria.

3 And all went to be taxedevery one into his own city.

4 And Joseph also went up from Galileeout of the city ofNazarethinto Judaeaunto the city of Davidwhich is calledBethlehem because he was of the house and lineage of David

5 To be taxed with Mary his espoused wifebeing great withchild.

6 And so it wasthatwhile they were therethe days wereaccomplished that she should be delivered.

7 And she brought forth her firstborn sonand wrapped him inswaddling clothesand laid him in a mangerbecause there wasno room for them in the inn.

8 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in thefieldkeeping watch over their flock by night.

9 Andlothe angel of the Lord came upon themand the gloryof the Lord shone round about themand they were sore afraid.

10 And the angel said unto themFear notforbeholdI bringyou good tidings of great joywhich shall be to all people.

11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviourwhich is Christ the Lord.

12 And this shall be a sign unto youYe shall find the babewrapped in swaddling clotheslying in a manger.

13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of theheavenly host praising Godand saying

14 Glory to God in the highestand on earth peacegood willtoward men.

15 And it came to passas the angels were gone away from theminto heaventhe shepherds said one to anotherLet us now goeven unto Bethlehemand see this thing which is come to pass which the Lord hath made known unto us.

16 And they came with hasteand found Maryand Josephand thebabe lying in a manger.

17 And when they had seen itthey made known abroad the sayingwhich was told them concerning this child.

18 And all they that heard it wondered at those things which weretold them by the shepherds.

19 But Mary kept all these thingsand pondered them in herheart.

20 And the shepherds returnedglorifying and praising God forall the things that they had heard and seenas it was toldunto them.

21 And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising ofthe childhis name was called JESUSwhich was so named ofthe angel before he was conceived in the womb.

22 And when the days of her purification according to the law ofMoses were accomplishedthey brought him to Jerusalemtopresent him to the Lord

23As it is written in the law of the LORDEvery male thatopeneth the womb shall be called holy to the Lord

24 And to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said inthe law of the LordA pair of turtledovesor two youngpigeons.

25 Andbeholdthere was a man in Jerusalemwhose name wasSimeonand the same man was just and devoutwaiting for theconsolation of Israeland the Holy Ghost was upon him.

26 And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghostthat he shouldnot see deathbefore he had seen the Lord s Christ.

27 And he came by the Spirit into the templeand when theparents brought in the child Jesusto do for him after thecustom of the law

28 Then took he him up in his armsand blessed Godand said

29 Lordnow lettest thou thy servant depart in peaceaccordingto thy word

30 For mine eyes have seen thy salvation

31 Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people

32 A light to lighten the Gentilesand the glory of thy peopleIsrael.

33 And Joseph and his mother marvelled at those things which werespoken of him.

34 And Simeon blessed themand said unto Mary his mother Beholdthis child is set for the fall and rising again ofmany in Israeland for a sign which shall be spoken against

35Yeaa sword shall pierce through thy own soul also thatthe thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.

36 And there was one Annaa prophetessthe daughter of Phanuelof the tribe of Asershe was of a great ageand had livedwith an husband seven years from her virginity

37 And she was a widow of about fourscore and four yearswhichdeparted not from the templebut served God with fastings andprayers night and day.

38 And she coming in that instant gave thanks likewise unto theLordand spake of him to all them that looked for redemptionin Jerusalem.

39 And when they had performed all things according to the law ofthe Lordthey returned into Galileeto their own cityNazareth.

40 And the child grewand waxed strong in spiritfilled withwisdomand the grace of God was upon him.

41 Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast ofthe passover.

42 And when he was twelve years oldthey went up to Jerusalemafter the custom of the feast.

43 And when they had fulfilled the daysas they returnedthechild Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalemand Joseph and hismother knew not of it.

44 But theysupposing him to have been in the companywent aday s journeyand they sought him among their kinsfolk andacquaintance.

45 And when they found him notthey turned back again toJerusalemseeking him.

46 And it came to passthat after three days they found him inthe templesitting in the midst of the doctorsboth hearingthemand asking them questions.

47 And all that heard him were astonished at his understandingand answers.

48 And when they saw himthey were amazedand his mother saidunto himSonwhy hast thou thus dealt with usbeholdthyfather and I have sought thee sorrowing.

49 And he said unto themHow is it that ye sought mewist yenot that I must be about my Father s business

50 And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them.

51 And he went down with themand came to Nazarethand wassubject unto thembut his mother kept all these sayings inher heart.

52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and statureand in favour withGod and man.
