Matthew Chapter 5

1 And seeing the multitudeshe went up into a mountainandwhen he was sethis disciples came unto him

2 And he opened his mouthand taught themsaying

3 Blessed are the poor in spiritfor theirs is the kingdom ofheaven.

4 Blessed are they that mournfor they shall be comforted.

5 Blessed are the meekfor they shall inherit the earth.

6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst afterrighteousnessfor they shall be filled.

7 Blessed are the mercifulfor they shall obtain mercy.

8 Blessed are the pure in heartfor they shall see God.

9 Blessed are the peacemakersfor they shall be called thechildren of God.

10 Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousnesssakefor theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11 Blessed are yewhen men shall revile youand persecute youand shall say all manner of evil against you falselyfor mysake.

12 Rejoiceand be exceeding gladfor great is your reward inheavenfor so persecuted they the prophets which were beforeyou.

13 Ye are the salt of the earthbut if the salt have lost hissavourwherewith shall it be saltedit is thenceforth goodfor nothingbut to be cast outand to be trodden under footof men.

14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hillcannot be hid.

15 Neither do men light a candleand put it under a bushelbuton a candlestickand it giveth light unto all that are in thehouse.

16 Let your light so shine before menthat they may see yourgood worksand glorify your Father which is in heaven.

17 Think not that I am come to destroy the lawor the prophetsI am not come to destroybut to fulfil.

18 For verily I say unto youTill heaven and earth passone jotor one tittle shall in no wise pass from the lawtill all befulfilled.

19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these leastcommandmentsand shall teach men sohe shall be called theleast in the kingdom of heavenbut whosoever shall do andteach themthe same shall be called great in the kingdom ofheaven.

20 For I say unto youThat except your righteousness shallexceed the righteousness of the scribes and Phariseesyeshall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.

21 Ye have heard that it was said of them of old timeThou shaltnot killand whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of thejudgment

22 But I say unto youThat whosoever is angry with his brotherwithout a cause shall be in danger of the judgmentandwhosoever shall say to his brotherRacashall be in dangerof the councilbut whosoever shall sayThou foolshall bein danger of hell fire.

23 Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altarand thererememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee

24 Leave there thy gift before the altarand go thy wayfirstbe reconciled to thy brotherand then come and offer thygift.

25 Agree with thine adversary quicklywhiles thou art in the waywith himlest at any time the adversary deliver thee to thejudgeand the judge deliver thee to the officerand thou becast into prison.

26 Verily I say unto theeThou shalt by no means come outthencetill thou hast paid the uttermost farthing.

27 Ye have heard that it was said by them of old timeThou shaltnot commit adultery

28 But I say unto youThat whosoever looketh on a woman to lustafter her hath committed adultery with her already in hisheart.

29 And if thy right eye offend theepluck it outand cast itfrom theefor it is profitable for thee that one of thymembers should perishand not that thy whole body should becast into hell.

30 And if thy right hand offend theecut it offand cast itfrom theefor it is profitable for thee that one of thymembers should perishand not that thy whole body should becast into hell.

31 It hath been saidWhosoever shall put away his wifelet himgive her a writing of divorcement

32 But I say unto youThat whosoever shall put away his wife saving for the cause of fornicationcauseth her to commitadulteryand whosoever shall marry her that is divorcedcommitteth adultery.

33 Againye have heard that it hath been said by them of oldtimeThou shalt not forswear thyselfbut shalt perform untothe Lord thine oaths

34 But I say unto youSwear not at allneither by heavenforit is God s throne

35 Nor by the earthfor it is his footstoolneither byJerusalemfor it is the city of the great King.

36 Neither shalt thou swear by thy headbecause thou canst notmake one hair white or black.

37 But let your communication beYeayeaNaynayforwhatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.

38 Ye have heard that it hath been saidAn eye for an eyeand atooth for a tooth

39 But I say unto youThat ye resist not evilbut whosoevershall smite thee on thy right cheekturn to him the otheralso.

40 And if any man will sue thee at the lawand take away thycoatlet him have thy cloak also.

41 And whosoever shall compel thee to go a milego with himtwain.

42 Give to him that asketh theeand from him that would borrowof thee turn not thou away.

43 Ye have heard that it hath been saidThou shalt love thyneighbourand hate thine enemy.

44 But I say unto youLove your enemiesbless them that curseyoudo good to them that hate youand pray for them whichdespitefully use youand persecute you

45 That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heavenfor he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the goodandsendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.

46 For if ye love them which love youwhat reward have yedonot even the publicans the same

47 And if ye salute your brethren onlywhat do ye more thanothersdo not even the publicans so

48 Be ye therefore perfecteven as your Father which is inheaven is perfect.
