John Chapter 18

1 When Jesus had spoken these wordshe went forth with hisdisciples over the brook Cedronwhere was a gardeninto thewhich he enteredand his disciples.

2 And Judas alsowhich betrayed himknew the placefor Jesusofttimes resorted thither with his disciples.

3 Judas thenhaving received a band of men and officers fromthe chief priests and Phariseescometh thither with lanternsand torches and weapons.

4 Jesus thereforeknowing all things that should come upon himwent forthand said unto themWhom seek ye

5 They answered himJesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto themIam he. And Judas alsowhich betrayed himstood with them.

6 As soon then as he had said unto themI am hethey wentbackwardand fell to the ground.

7 Then asked he them againWhom seek yeAnd they saidJesusof Nazareth.

8 Jesus answeredI have told you that I am heif therefore yeseek melet these go their way

9 That the saying might be fulfilledwhich he spakeOf themwhich thou gavest me have I lost none.

10 Then Simon Peter having a sword drew itand smote the highpriest s servantand cut off his right ear. The servant sname was Malchus.

11 Then said Jesus unto PeterPut up thy sword into the sheaththe cup which my Father hath given meshall I not drink it

12 Then the band and the captain and officers of the Jews tookJesusand bound him

13 And led him away to Annas firstfor he was father in law toCaiaphaswhich was the high priest that same year.

14 Now Caiaphas was hewhich gave counsel to the Jewsthat itwas expedient that one man should die for the people.

15 And Simon Peter followed Jesusand so did another disciplethat disciple was known unto the high priestand went in withJesus into the palace of the high priest.

16 But Peter stood at the door without. Then went out that otherdisciplewhich was known unto the high priestand spake untoher that kept the doorand brought in Peter.

17 Then saith the damsel that kept the door unto PeterArt notthou also one of this man s disciplesHe saithI am not.

18 And the servants and officers stood therewho had made a fireof coalsfor it was coldand they warmed themselvesandPeter stood with themand warmed himself.

19 The high priest then asked Jesus of his disciplesand of hisdoctrine.

20 Jesus answered himI spake openly to the worldI ever taughtin the synagogueand in the templewhither the Jews alwaysresortand in secret have I said nothing.

21 Why askest thou meask them which heard mewhat I have saidunto thembeholdthey know what I said.

22 And when he had thus spokenone of the officers which stoodby struck Jesus with the palm of his handsayingAnswerestthou the high priest so

23 Jesus answered himIf I have spoken evilbear witness of theevilbut if wellwhy smitest thou me

24 Now Annas had sent him bound unto Caiaphas the high priest.

25 And Simon Peter stood and warmed himself. They said thereforeunto himArt not thou also one of his disciplesHe denieditand saidI am not.

26 One of the servants of the high priestbeing his kinsmanwhose ear Peter cut offsaithDid not I see thee in thegarden with him

27 Peter then denied againand immediately the cock crew.

28 Then led they Jesus from Caiaphas unto the hall of judgment and it was earlyand they themselves went not into thejudgment halllest they should be defiledbut that theymight eat the passover.

29 Pilate then went out unto themand saidWhat accusationbring ye against this man

30 They answered and said unto himIf he were not a malefactorwe would not have delivered him up unto thee.

31 Then said Pilate unto themTake ye himand judge himaccording to your law. The Jews therefore said unto himIt isnot lawful for us to put any man to death

32 That the saying of Jesus might be fulfilledwhich he spakesignifying what death he should die.

33 Then Pilate entered into the judgment hall againand calledJesusand said unto himArt thou the King of the Jews

34 Jesus answered himSayest thou this thing of thyselfor didothers tell it thee of me

35 Pilate answeredAm I a JewThine own nation and the chiefpriests have delivered thee unto mewhat hast thou done

36 Jesus answeredMy kingdom is not of this worldif my kingdomwere of this worldthen would my servants fightthat Ishould not be delivered to the Jewsbut now is my kingdom notfrom hence.

37 Pilate therefore said unto himArt thou a king thenJesusansweredThou sayest that I am a king. To this end was Ibornand for this cause came I into the worldthat I shouldbear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truthheareth my voice.

38 Pilate saith unto himWhat is truthAnd when he had saidthishe went out again unto the Jewsand saith unto themIfind in him no fault at all.

39 But ye have a customthat I should release unto you one atthe passoverwill ye therefore that I release unto you theKing of the Jews

40 Then cried they all againsayingNot this manbut Barabbas.Now Barabbas was a robber.
