Broken Reality

Seeing her like this made my heartache, I feel so bad for her. When I looked at her aura all I wanted to do was find a way to help her. Her usually bright colorful aura with a beautiful golden outside rim was now almost completely black with almost no color left whatsoever. The black color means that’s she’s falling into a state of despair. I’ll be honest though, I didn’t think she’d be able to make it as far as she did without collapsing. Not many humans can handle this type of thing without going completely mad or breaking down completely.

As I carried her towards the top of the mountain where I left Alex and Gavin. I started to wonder if Jessica would be interested in helping me collect all twenty-four of the keys...maybe, just maybe she will understand why I’m doing this if I explained it all to her. Maybe she will even want to help me so she can then see her real family.

Alex was holding Gavin over his shoulder when I got to the top of the mountain. “What took you so long man, this guy is not as light as he looks.”

“Oh, please man.” I said as I took a few steps towards him.“You and I both know that his weight is like a feather to you, remember our strength competition when I beat you carrying eight cars on top of each other and you could only do six? The entire thing fell forwards and we completely covered Dominic Laviere underneath them all, it was hilarious!”

“Yeah...but even so it was still getting really bring. What were you two even doing for so long anyway?”

Alex looked at me with a smirk on his face like he already knew, but boy was he ever wrong. I love the guy, but Alex has always tried getting me into a relationship, but he just doesn’t understand how pointless it is. I mean it’s not like I can’t be in a relationship with anyone, but all of the female vampires are assholes, and everyone else will die eventually, or I’ll end up dating an old woman eventually, awkward. Alex and I started walking down the hidden trail towards the backup emergence car we keep for just in case situations, like now.

“Man, you think too much into things, I was just waiting to see if she would talk to her ‘mother’ or not. I swear tho this girl has got some serious guts, she’s taking all of this like a champ.”

Alex was quiet for quite a long time, which is weird ...normally he would have a reply. I wonder what he’s thinking, well there’s only one way to find out.

“Alex seriously dude, why are you so quiet all of a sudden?”

He didn’t answer me at all he just kept walking, it looked like something was bothering him. As we got closer to the car I got tired of waiting for him. “Bro seriously...why are you so quiet what on earth are you thinking about that has you acting like this...”

Again no answer. I grabbed his arm and snapped my fingers in front of his face, “hello earth to Alex what the hell has gotten into you”

Finally, he snaps out of it and finally looks at me, “what is it?”

“What is it? I’ve been talking to you for like five to ten minutes asking you the same damn question over and over again, and all your doing is ignoring me! Why are you so distracted? What could you possibly be thinking about.”

Alex, paused for a moment thinking about what he was going to say. “It’s just that, there’s something that’s been bugging me about that girl ever since I met her...honestly it’s the reason why I stopped to pick her up, to begin with.”

“What is it?”

We were approaching the car, “normally with humans, I’m able to read their minds, as well as take purposefully sway their opinion if needed. Humans are very easy to control...but with Jessica...I wasn’t able to read her mind.”

Alex and I put Gavin and Jessica in the back seat, then I went into the passenger seat. I think I know why he can’t read her mind at all.

“She’s one of the keys, Alex. You have figured that out by now right?”

Alex laughed as he started the car, and pulled out of the driveway, “of course I figured that out! She healed every single wound on her brother, but keys are only supposed to have one ability. That means she shouldn’t be able to block me from reading her mind...and that’s not the only thing.”

I felt a chill run over my spine...from the way, he said that I knew that he did something he wasn’t supposed to do. I kept my voice calm yet threatening as I spoke “Alex...what did you do?”

I noticed that Alex’s grip on the steering wheel tightened, what could he have possibly done? Before he had a chance to answer, I ended up hearing an explosion in the distance on the other side of the mountain. I looked into the review mirror as we drove away and noticed smoke in the distance.

“Looks like they’re about to get in, too bad they won’t find anyone. Anyway, you were saying?”

Alex sighed. “Before you say anything, let me speak until the very end ok?”

“Okay? Now talk”

“When I noticed that I couldn’t read her mind, I decided to see if I could persuade her into doing something random. I started small and tried to see if I could persuade her into thinking you’re attractive and wanting to be with you. Before you say anything!!! It didn’t work. I kept using more and more power when all three of us were together in the hideout and it didn’t work. What I’m trying to say is that...”

Alex stopped for a second, but I think that I already know what he’s talking about. “You don’t think she’s really a human do you?”
