Common things

“I’m sure he’ll ask you to forgive him--”

“Really?” I looked at him hopeful. Then it dawned on me. “You’re just being nice.”

“I saw the look on his face when you stormed out.”

“So he regrets it?”

“Yeah. I guess.” He paused. “I didn’t mean to annoy your boyfriend. I am not used to this. I just...I’m sorry...”

“Hey, don’t be sorry. He should be sorry. You’re not used to this. You were only trying to be nice.”

“I don’t know why I’m speaking to you...I’m normally scared or so distant to strangers and sometimes my sisters. I don’t even know if I’m ready to go to college, it’ll be too crowded and too many people--”

“But I’ll be there. What do you want to be?”

He froze for a second. He just sat there thinking really hard. “I don’t know. I guess I would love to help people with autism or mental conditions but I’m not ready. I can’t stand new people. I just need to change my dream. I always wanted to be an engineer.”

“You’re holding something back. Tell me what you really want.”

“I have no clue. I am just forcing myself to like anything. I don’t know. I don’t even know if I want to be an engineer--”

“Do you like medicine?”

“Yes but I can’t--”

“What profession would you like?”

“I can’t be it. I’ll freak out and the screams and shouts and baby whines and--”

“Pediatrics?”

“I...I don’t know...”

“I want to be one. You can think about a lot of specialites.”

“I...I can’t be any, my autism will--”

“If you had no autism...what would you be?”

“I guess...I could be a pediatrician or...I guess pediatrics or dermatology. They’re the non-messiest to me.”

“I guess. So what courses do you want to take? You need to speak to the head master.”

“I know...I don’t think I’m ready--”

“But I’ll be with you.”

“I’m not ready. I can’t...” He got up to leave when I pulled him in. “You can’t let your autism stop you from being happy. I was in your shoes once and guess what, I still do risky things which my doctors tell me not to do, but as long as it makes me happy...I do it.”

He sat back down. “Okay. So what do you want me to do?”

“What’s one of the most uncomfortable things you’d ever do?”

“Well...I don’t like crowds.”

“Let’s go.” I said getting up. I hopped to the door and froze. “I forgot my wheel chair. Aww, I can’t believe I miss it.”

“Well, you did get used to it.”

“Correct. Now I need to find my crutches.”

“They’re not in this building.”

“You’re driving.”

“No, Skylar--”

“Call me Sky from now on.”

“I like Skylar.”

“Okay. We need to nick her keys. I’ll distract everyone and you nick the keys from her jacket which is near the front door.”

“What if I get caught?”

“Blame it on me.”

Then I hopped into the living room. I sat down and started annoying everyone. “I was crying and none of you cared. Ooof. Oh, I need to get some fresh air. Aiden want to come with me?”

“I don’t think--”

“Noah. Save it.” Then I hopped out the front door with Aiden by my side.

“That wasn’t hard. They didn’t even try and stop me. Can you believe it?”

“Yes.”

Then I glared at him. “I mean no.”

We took the lift and went to the ground floor. We quickly got out covering half our faces. There were a few people outside with cameras but they didn’t see us. We got into Alex’s car and drove peacefully all the way to my apartment. We opened my front door and I saw my crutches. “Finally!” I exhaled. “I’ve probably burnt twenty calories by now!”

“What do you want to do now?”

“I don’t know. What do you want to do?”

“I don’t know too. Actually, have you ever had pizza?”

“Yes. Lots of times. I get we are trapped in a house but we do eat like normal people.”

“Good. I’ll order some.” I said taking out my phone. After I’d finished ordering, I went to sit next to Aiden. “Autism is hard to live with.”

“Tell me about it.” He sighed. He hung his head back. “I don’t think this outside world is helping. It’s just making everything even worse.”

“Hey, it’s fine. But...autism...it’s just shouts and loud noises right?”

“Yes. And I don’t like interacting with people. That’s why we haven’t really escaped.”

“Oh....I didn’t know.”

“I am sorry I ran away from Alex yesterday--”

“Don’t worry, you were scared and besides, everyone runs away from her.” I joked. “Just joking. She’s lovely, just get to know her--”

“I..I don’t want to. Not yet.” He said looking me dead in the eye. “You and Noah, what’s the deal between you two?”

“We are a couple. Even though he’s not acting like a proper boyfriend and gets me on my nerves.”

“Oh. So how about Gemma and Mason?”

“Relationship status, unknown.” I sighed.

“Want to play a game?”

“Yes.”

“How about, we say all the movies we like and see how many we have in common?”

“Well, we can start off by Hitman’s bodyguard.” He said

“Watched.”

“Lucy.”

“Watched.”

“Angel has fallen?”

“Watched.”

“The Meg?”

“Most appropriate movie by Jason Statham.”

“Captain America Civil war?”

“March.”

“Spy.”

“Melissa McCarthy.”

“Pitch perfect?”

“All of them but my favourite is number 3. Just because of Ruby Rose.”

“Life of the party?”

“Again. Melissa McCarthy. Make it harder.”

“How to build a girl?”

“Watched it on Prime Video two months ago.”

“Kick ass?”

“Both.”

“Kissing booth?”

“Both of them and the book. Please make it harder.”

“Legally blonde?”

“Puppy and pink obsessed girl. Hate it.”

“The watch?”

I squealed. “I fucking love that movie!”

“Spiderman?”

“Come on. Who hasn’t watched all of them?”

“All the Marvel movies?!”

“I have apart from Catwoman because apparently Alex said it was too inappropriate.”

“The Maze runner?”

I froze. “I’ve forgotten that movie’s name. I had only watched half the movie until Mason changed it!”

“Okay, how about...Like a boss?”

“No...but I have watched The Boss.”

“Oh. Okay, another one, Harry Potter?”

“I only watched one movie and I’ve got a book but I only read a page and got bored.”

“Rio?”

“I had to watch it because of my little sister.”

“Bad neighbours?”

“Yes. Of course.”

“Fighting with my family?”

“I wanted to watch it but I ended up watching fifth wave.”

“I watched both films.”

“No tell--”

“Motel?”

Then the I heard a knock on the door.

“Pizza man.” I opened the door. I thanked the guy and went to sit back down with Aiden. “We have too many movies in common.”

“Who are your top five favourite actors, in random order.” Aiden asked taking a pizza slice.

“Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Ruby Rose, Jennifer Aniston, Melissa McCarthy and Grace Mortez, because of fifth wave, bad neighbours and Carrie. And lastly, Jason Statham.”

“That’s more than five. You’ve practically said them all. Oh and Jim Carrey--”

“Yes! Jim Carrey!”

“Have you watched...Sisters?”

“Yes. How about 27 dresses?”

“Yes.” He paused. “We love movies and have good taste.”

“I’ve never met anyone that likes many of the movies apart from Mason.”

“My sisters like my movies.” He smiled. “And you too.”

“That’s good.” I sighed. “I’m so bored.”

“What’s up?”

“I don’t want this. I just want to not be in TV. I just want to be back to normal.”

“I too. But what’s done is done. It’s my fault--”

“No it’s not. It’s your parents.”

“I guess.”

We sat in silence for a while. “This is really weird. Should we go back? Alex might be wondering where we are--”

“She’d have called.” I reached into my pockets but froze. “I lost my phone--”

“No, you charged it.”

“How did you--”

“Memory.” He pointed at his brain. “Like my sister would say, Aiden clever clogs.”

“Well you’re definitely clever.”

“Yeah. This is the first time anyone in the outside has called me clever. You’re the only one who called me smart and now clever.” He blushed.

“You’re really smart.” I paused. “Really easy to get along with.”

“Not always like that to everyone--”

“But to me. I always manage to get people to like me.” I smiled.

“You’ve got a really bad temper. And you’ve got crazy ideas that always work.” He said.

“Are you going to go college next week?”

He hesitated for a bit. “I don’t know. If I’m in your classes then, yes but if not, I can’t. I can’t trust anyone apart from you and my sisters.”

“And why’s that?”

“Because...I don’t know...” He said looking into my eyes.

“Do you always stare at people’s eyes?”

“I can read people’s eyes.”

“Oh, that’s cool.”

“Does your boyfriend know--”

“He’s not my boyfriend--”

“But you--”

“Yeah. I can’t handle him. But...I can’t tell Alex. You can’t too. If she finds out I dumped him twice....I don’t think she’ll like me again. And Noah...will be mad...I shouldn’t have said anything. Never mind--”

“You can’t just do that. What if you keep in this relationship forever?”

“I’ll wait until he cheats on me--”

“What if he doesn’t? What if he falls in love with you even more?”

I threw my pizza slice straight at the door but it swung open and I saw Noah. He jumped. “I know I annoyed you but--”

“That was supposed to hit the door but you came in at the wrong time.”

“Oh.” He said walking in. “Alex will kill you.”
