Chapter 16

Heather,

Spain is more beautiful than Kane could have ever expressed. There is healing here. I hope you are well. I’ve made a promise to myself to actually send this letter.

Your friend, Charlotte

Seras lay curled around Kane’s Beagle, Garland. The two had become inseparable.

“Miss Shepherd.”

“Heather, please.”

“Of course. Heather, I’ve told you, you needn’t ride all the way out here in this heat to deliver this.” He nodded to the envelope on the desk, bursting with banknotes.

“I enjoy the ride, besides, I love my posse but close-quarter living is no walk in the park.”

Kane laughed and Paulina appeared beside him with more wine.

“I’ve been spoiled by your excellent wine and lavish hospitality, Kane.”

“Please. He gestured to the kitchen. Take as many as you like.”

“Charlotte returns today? Doesn’t she?”

“Yes. I have a carriage waiting at the docks for her. I received word that she made quite an impression in Italy. They were apprehensive about having a woman in her position, much less an American, but they are very pleased.”

“Could the first female Caporegime have been anyone else?” Heather laughed. Kane had entrusted the truth of his family to her after that fateful day.

“I know another woman who could most certainly fit right into that position.” He grinned at Heather.

“You flatter me, but authority is not really my deal. The only position in the mafia that could interest me is yours.”

“Cheers to that.” Kane laughed.

“Now that Charlotte is home are you finally going to make an honest woman of her?”

Kane’s Cheshire grin lit up his face, “Why don’t you ask her if she will make an honest man of me?”

Heather turned around, Charlotte stood at the bottom of the stairs with her bags.

“I’m so glad to be home.” She sighed. Kane waved a hand and the staff carried her bags inside and he pulled her into his arms.

“How was Italy, My Darling?”

“It was magnificent but I don’t want to talk about business right now. Let’s have a drink.”

“You’ll have to catch up, Sweetheart.” Heather waved an empty glass.

Charlotte hugged Heather, “What are you doing asking about Kane and me? I haven’t seen you with the same woman twice. Unless something has changed while I’ve been away.”

Heather blushed and Charlotte gasped, “There is someone! Who is she?”

“All in good time, Char.” Heather winked and walked inside.

Kane took Charlotte’s arm, “How are you feeling Darling?”

“World’s better. Time away was just what I needed. I learned so much.”

“I’m so glad. Were my aunt and nephew good hosts?”

“They were delightful.”

“Good, let’s get you inside.”

“Kane?”

“Yes?”

“I missed you.”

“I missed you, Amore.”
