Romance / Adventure

Officer Ann Johnson meets Detective Ednus Blombard, and through this meeting the first adventure in Italy goes way up and even downward. Can these two come together to catch the criminal?

Chapter 1

My name is Ann Johnson, and I am a detective. I am very good at my job and clever, but with the opposite sex not very good. I thought I had myself figured out because I always knew what I wanted out of life. I want to be the greatest detective ever known, be with and marry the guy who is my true love, live with him, and have a family of two children.

But let’s say the last two parts got changed recently. Now I am finding that I want to have three children, so I won’t make them suffer like the crazy mother I used to live with and made me suffer. I know it says in the Bible respect thy mother and father, but as adult children, shouldn’t you get respect too? Everyone needs respect.

Now as for the guy, I always thought I wanted a guy who is tough on the outside and as soft as a teddy bear on the inside. I even thought I wanted a guy who is similar to a beast like in my favorite fairy tales: Beauty and the Beast. But after today’s conversation with my best friend, I realized, I am ignoring my heart again.

I am looking for other types of guys for other girls, like strong tough guys, guys who are flirts, hot guys who like to have sex, and those are not my type of guy. I guess it’s all because I have been raised on fairy tales, and I love watching anime as well. It’s been something that I do a lot since I was young.

My requirements in a guy are:

Patient (Because I can be irrational sometimes)

Strong (Physically and Mentally)

Trusting and Trustworthy

I know those are a lot of requirements because this is my personality:

Fun Loving

Irrational (Sometimes)

Repetitive in Words

I know I really don’t have a lot of personality traits, but that is because only my friends can describe me very well and my family too. But now the question is: who is my idea guy in reality? I always wondered. I can also be described as a female with shoulder length ebony hair, average, chocolate skin, tall, and I have lime eyes which usually stand out.

Well a few days later on a bus with people and it was half full. I was using my cell phone to talk to Andrera, my BFF, about my idea guy, but we stopped as two boys, who looked under seventeen walked down the aisle and snatched my cell phone out of my hand.

I yelled, “STOP, police!” at them, but they kept running. I got off the bus and ran down the street after them. But since I didn’t exercise, I could not catch up to them. I felt as it as they laughed in my face, and I burned up inside and started crying. Suddenly, I heard yelling and screaming, and I ran to find it.

I turned around the next corner to see a tall guy grab both boys by the shirt, and he took the cell phone away and asked, “Why are you two running so fast, and with a cell phone in your hand?”

“Let us go, that’s ours.” Yelled the boys.

I approached them and said, “No it’s not. It’s mine. They stole it from me, and I will press charges since I am a cop.”

“What!? Yo let us go.” Said the boy in the red short sleeve T-Shirt, and blue jeans.

“Yeah, you have nothing to do with this stupid.” Said the boy in the white and blue striped shirt.

“Actually he does since he is a witness, he will need to state a testimony when the rest of the officers get here. Sir, can I have that cell phone back.”

“Sure.” The man answered as he handed me my phone.

I called the station then, “Since I just called for backup, they should be here within ten minutes.” I said.

He laughed and said, “Well boys, it looks like you are going to jail.”

But…we didn’t do it.” The boys said looking at the both of us.

“Well that is what you get for stealing and hurting people.” I said huffing and gaining my breath back.

The other offers arrived, took the boys away down to the police station where they would call their parents, and file a report.

As for the tall guy with pale skin, shoulder length blond hair, blue-green eyes, small blond beard, and muscular, I asked him, “What’s your name sir?”

“Ednus, Ednus Blombard.” He answered.

“Well Mr. Blombard, thank you so much for your help.” I said.

“You’re welcome officer, and might I give you a little advice.”

“Well sure.”

I wonder what he is talking about.

“If you don’t like this line of work, you shouldn’t be in it.”

“What, how dare you.” I was ticked off.

“Just a suggestion. You might be fighting against your heart.” He said as he left.

“Hey, don’t just go giving people advice out of the blue!” I yelled as I turned red.

“Sure, Officer Johnson.”

Great, not only am I embarrassed, he got my name from the other officers. What is this guy? And how did he know about my heart? Well I will never see him again.

But the next day at the police station after I got a new cell phone since my old one was being used in a case, I saw Ednus. I wasn’t too happy about it.

“Hello, Miss Heartbreaker.” He said when we met again.

“Hello, Mr. Commenter, wait just one minute it is Officer Johnson to you.” I said as Chief Collins a friend of my Uncle Bobby, who is a captain, showed up, “Isn’t that right chief?”

“Well Johnson, actually Detective Blombard is your superior.” Said Chief Collins.

“Wait detective?” I said. I couldn’t believe that this guy got the rank that I have been striving for five years to get. The actual truth is I’m just an officer for the police force. But I want to be a detective, and I have been working at it for years.

“And also he is your new partner.” Added Chief Collins.

You got to be kidding. This guy, “Are you sure chief that there might not be some misunderstanding?”

Nope it’s right here in writing.” He said as he gave me a stack of papers in a folder.

I read through it. This can’t be right. This basically says, I will be stuck with this guy for the next three years, and all because of my negligence on cases, “But I thought everything turned out fine on those cases sir.”

“Well apparently not. Not according to the higher ups.”

I mumbled, “This isn’t right.” Then I said aloud, but in a regular tone, “I don’t need a partner. I won’t ever need one.”

“I don’t believe that to be true.” Said Ednus.

“And why is that?” I asked.

He whispered in my ear, “Because you really don’t want to be here, do you?”

I blushed then said aloud, “Chief, can I have a word alone with my colleague?”

“Sure, you might as well since you will be working together.”

Then I pulled Ednus off to the side in a corner.

“What do you think you are doing?” I asked him.

“What does it look like, I’m meeting my new partner and doing my job.”

“Lies, you knew about this yesterday when you met me.”

“No, I thought Ann Johnson was someone else at first, until I heard your name.”

“Well then you could have at least told me, once you knew it was me.”

“Would you have believed me?”

I thought about it for a moment, “Well I guess not.”

“Exactly, plus you were going through something at the time.”

Then the chief came over, “Are you done introducing yourselves?”

“Yes.” We both said.

“Well if you both are ready; we have work to do.”

“Right.” I said.

“Sure boss.” Said Ednus.

We both went into Chief Collins’ office and sat down as he explained what our mission was, “Well Detective Blombard and Officer Johnson your first mission with this station is to travel to Italy.”

“What?” I exclaimed, “That is so cool.” A beautiful city on top of water.

“I didn’t finish Johnson, plus you are not going there to sightsee.”

Ednus just kept quiet while the chief continued, “Your mission is to help the local police find a smuggler that is bringing opium into the country. The rumor is that he is an American that is associating with the Italians to make a pay off by dealing the opium. I want you to find the culprits, the opium, and bring them in.”

“Uh, sir,” I said as I rose my hand, “What is opium?”

“Opium is a drug that not only makes you feel good, it also has side effects of hallucinations, erratic behavior, and death if overdosed.” Said Ednus as Chief Collins shook his head.

“Thanks for the information.” I said.

“Well you both leave tomorrow morning.”

“Thanks chief.” We said as we took the tickets he gave us and left his office.

I started to leave the station then Ednus asked, “Hey Ann, can you meet me here at the station at 8:00am?”

“That’s Johnson, and I’ll just meet you at the gate of the plane in the airport.”

“Sure.” He said as I walked away.

We met at the airport gate. We both had carry-on bags, and rollaway suitcases.

“Hey, had a good night?” he asked me.

“I couldn’t sleep because I was so excited.”

“That’s good. This is your first trip out of the country, right?”

“How did you know that?”

“I did my research.”

“Well research this,” I said as I sauntered away, we got on the plane in coach, and there was plenty of room for sleeping, as we got to our seats, “I’ll sit on the inside, and you can have the window seat.”

“What’s wrong with the window?”

“Nothing, it’s just a window.” I said as we sat down.

After thirteen hours on the plane, we landed in Italy. I hurried off the plane at once. When I was on the ground in the airport I said, “Thank God, we’re here.”

“What’s your problem?” asked Ednus.

“Nothing, let’s get to the hotel.”

As we started walking to the taxicabs he said, “It’s not a hotel.”

“I made reservations at an inn.”

“An inn? Are you kidding?”

We got in the taxi at the outside, and started traveling through the gorgeous sites of Italy. We arrived in Italy at night, the rivers, streets, and building were majestic. It truly is the city above water, Venice. The lights made it dazzle, and the air was moist and cool for the summer.

After thirty minutes, we arrived at this quaint inn that was also by the water. It was small and non-noticeable like a small cottage, and it was cute.

I smiled at the thought of this beautiful place as Ednus got out of the car.

“Well what are you waiting for, our luggage is by the door.” Said Ednus leaving the side of the taxi.

“I was looking around.” I said trailing behind him.

“Tourists.” He said as the taxi took off.

“And I suppose you have been here before.”

“Yes, all over the world.”

“Oh, a traveler.” I said as we went inside, “That must be very inconvenient to travel all over the place.”

“No, it is actually very refreshing and fun, plus I rather do that than be a homebody and never go anywhere.”

“A homebody is actually great, you have security and adjustment. Plus, there is no unknown variable, Mr. Move-A-Lot.”

“Okay, Miss Homebody and security, now you are sounding stuck up.”

“Stuck up?! I’ll show you stuck up…”

We both started arguing as we got to the front desk. Then the receptionist asked, “Hello, how may I help you?” which interrupted our argument.

“Yes,” said Ednus, “We have reservations under the name Blombard.”

“Yes, a double room with an attached door.” Said the receptionist.

“Forget the attachment room. I will have an individual room far away from him.” I said.

“Alright, how long will you be staying?”

“For a while.” I said.

“For a month or maybe less.” Said Ednus.

“Alright, that will cost three thousand in American dollars.”

“What?” I said embarrassed.

Ednus saw my face, “She will stay with me in the attached room.”

“Very good, I shall have your luggage sent up, and I will show you to your rooms.”

As we followed her up the stairs I whispered to him, “I wonder how the police department can afford this place, let alone the tickets for the plane too.”

“Oh, the department only paid for the plane tickets, I offered to pay for the inn myself.”

“What?!” I whispered back, “How can you afford this place?”

“I told you, I travel.”

“And quite frequently too.” I said sarcastically.

“Keep that up, and you’ll be out of a room.”

“Kick me out, and my uncle will hear about it.”

“The captain of the police department. You didn’t research that did you?”

“How will you call him? Can you speak Italian?”

“No, I only speak English, but that is where a cell phone comes in, and I have his number on speed dial.”

“Too shea.”

Lucky me, I won that argument as we got to our rooms. My room was on the right, his was on the left. She asked as our luggage came up, “Will there be anything else?”

“No, thank you so much.” Said Ednus.

“Then have a good night.” She said as she left.

As we were going into our rooms he said, “Knock if you need anything.”

“I won’t.” Then I slammed the door after I went in.

It was a gorgeous room, bed against the wall covered in cotton, lace sheets, and blankets. A bathroom that was tiled in eggshell-white, and the room had two dressers- one a vanity and the other a regular dresser with a television. Then there was a lamp at the side of the vanity.

I flopped on my bed, not knowing where this case would lead. I hoped we could catch the opium smugglers. But I found myself thinking of Ednus, from the moment I met him, he has been getting under my skin.

The next day after barely sleeping there was a BANG, BANG, BANG, BANG! Then it happened another time, and I got up. The sound was coming from the attached door. I cracked it open grumbling, “Yes.”

“Are you ready? We have to leave in five minutes to meet the police chief of this section of Italy, where most of the smuggling is concentrated.”

I just glared at him.

“Are you ready yet?”

“HELL NO!!!” I yelled then slammed the door in his face.

I laid back down on my bed and thought about it. I really should get ready. I got back up, opened the attached door and said, “I’ll be ready in twenty minutes just meet me downstairs.”

“Sure.” He said.

Unfortunately, after thirty minutes, I arrived downstairs where he was waiting at the door with a taxi.

“What kept you?” he asked.

“Getting washed and dressed is actually a process.”

“I know women who are faster.”

“My mother.”

“Oh, wow. You and your family travel and are fast. What else can you do?”

“Just get in.”

“Sure, whatever you say.” I said as we got in the taxi at the same time.

The taxi drove us to the local police station, where we met Chief Itian, the chief of police.

The man was slim, tall, and irritated, “Where have you two been? We expected you here thirty minutes ago. I understand the call, and I thank you for that, but why were you late originally?”

“That was because of my partner.” Ednus said glancing at me.

“I’m sorry, I overslept.” I said.

“Don’t let it happen again, now that you are here let’s begin this meeting.” Then we walked behind the chief as we went into a room were two other people were waiting. One was a blond, peach skinned, slim, short woman with blue eyes, and the other was a man- tall, muscular, pale skin, green eyes, and brown hair.

As we all got in Chief Itian said, “Officer Johnson and Detective Blombard this is Detective Konnie and Detective Barono.”

We all shook hands and greeted each other, but for some reason Detective Konnie, the female had a firm grip unlike Barono. It was like she was trying to break my hand. When we let go Chief Itian spoke, “Let’s get started.”

After we all sat down, we paid attention to the projector screen that was in the front of the room as Chief Itian explained, “This map on the board is the local area in this part of Italy. Now take a look at this.”

Then ninety-eight percent of the map was covered in red lines and arrows, “This is the amount of opium trade routes going through here.” Said the chief, “And according to the rumors, it might just expand throughout Italy.”

I was shocked. This is crazy.

“So what is our mission for right now?” asked Ednus.

Then the screen showed a peach skinned man with blazing fiery hair that was shoulder length and who had green eyes, “Find this man, he is the leader who is directing this drug trafficking.”

“Is this the American?” asked Detective Barono.

“Yes, but he is also Italian, and he has Italians working for him. So proceed with caution.” Said Chief Itian.

“Yes, sir.” We all said as we stood up.

And as we left he said, “Remember to report in any progress.”

“Right.” We all said.

I asked Ednus, “So where do you want to start.” As he looked at the copy of the marked map we were given at the meeting.

“Well we should start in the heart of town, which is close by.”

“But the criminals would not be stupid to do their dealings near a police station?”

“That all depends on how you look at it.”

“If you were hiding a treasure, where would you hide it?”

“Underground of course.” I answered.

Detective Konnie hearing our conversation chuckled at my answered, “You sure are useless.”

“What?” I said to her.

“Why are you with us again? Oh, that’s right you are just an officer, and not a detective.”

“Why you.” I said as I walked towards her with evil intent, which was the intent to slap her.

But Ednus stopped me, “Detective Konnie, please stop taunting my partner and focus on the task at hand.”

“Sure Detective Blombard, good luck.”

Then she left with Detective Barono. “Good riddance.” I said as I quickly stuck my tongue out at her and put it back in my mouth.

Ednus glared at me, “Are you four?”

“No, but that woman really gets to me.”

“Well you too, instead of acting like you’re five act like you are twenty-five.”

“Cool, and how old are you, might I ask out of curiosity?”

“I’m thirty-one for your information.” He said smoothing his small blond beard.

“That’s good to know. I’m dealing with an intelligent older man.”

“What’s so good about that?”

“Nothing.” I said smiling as we left. If he wasn’t so annoying, he would be my type.

We left the police station and headed to the center of town, where they were having a bazaar. All kinds of things were being sold there and maybe even opium.

I asked him, “Why did we come to this bazaar?”

“As I said, when you want to hide a treasure, where would you hide it? The answer is in plain sight.”

“Oh.” I said as I saw Konnie and Barono here too, “And that would explain why the other detectives are here.”

“Don’t worry about them. Let’s just focus on ourselves.”

“Cool, where do we start?”

“Let’s ask around, and don’t reveal that we are the police either.”

We split up individually blended in with the locals, and we started asking questions.

I asked an old woman, sellers that were at their stands, and even a couple, which is what brought the old wounds of my love life back. I thought I was over being jealous of people in love. But I guess not because after I questioned them about seeing anything strange and seeing opium I mumbled, “I hate you both.” It was after they walked away.

“Who do you hate?” asked Ednus as he came up behind me whispering.

I turned to slap him, “None of your business.”

But he caught my hand, “You have so many issues, first not following your heart, and now jealous of couples. Is there anything that you are happy with?”

I pulled my hand away from him, “It’s nothing you need to know, so why would you care?”

As I walked away from him, I turned back towards him with a heated face, “Since you have your great job, leave my life alone and be happy with yours.”

Then I walked away from him, and I didn’t see him for that day since I was looking all around the city for the opium smugglers, which was not easy. I couldn’t speak Italian, which made it difficult, and as for Ednus, I couldn’t be near him, not now anyway.

By nightfall, I headed back to the inn and into my room, and Ednus heard me slam the door.

He pounded the attached door, “Ann, can I come in?”

He tried to open the door, but I locked it from my side. I laid down on my bed and started to get some rest. But as I was resting and had my eyes closed, something felt strange, but I ignored it.

In my dream, I saw my ex-boyfriends, actually I stand corrected, potential love interests. They abandoned me just like in reality. I should get it straight, they rejected me when I asked them out because either they had a girlfriend, or they were not ready for a relationship. So I backed off. But in my dream after they left me, I saw a guy in the shadows who gave me a great smile.

“Who are you?” I asked as I smiled back.

“Ann, I love you.” He said.

I started crying because I wanted this dream to continue.

“Why are you crying?”

“Because I love you too, and I don’t want you to leave.”

“I won’t ever leave.”

“Yes you will because any guy I have an interest in leaves me, but at least this time can you kiss me?”

“So I can remember your touch. At least give me that.”

“Of course.”

He took me in his arms, held me close, and our lips connected. We kissed each other deeply but gently. I didn’t want to let him go so I held him, but that’s when I felt something. Something heavy was on top of me, and I woke up.

I saw Ednus on top of me, holding me with his eyes closed, and his tongue was in my mouth giving me a French kiss. Even though I wanted to push him away, I still held him close giving in.

Then he slowly moved his arms up my body and touched my breasts.

“Ahhhuun.” I moaned at the touch.

He pulled away slowly and stopped as he saw me awake. Being in the moment I kissed him on the lips, “Continue.”

“Are you sure this is what you want?”

“For once, I am going to follow my heart like someone suggests.” I answered then kissed him on the lips once more and put my tongue in his mouth. We kept kissing each other and stripped each other of our clothes. He kissed my breast with his mouth, and he licked it which caused me to moan even more.

When he stopped my face was as red as a tomato. He massaged my hips and breasts with his gentle hands, “Are you sure you don’t want to stop?”

After he said that I was tempted to give in, and I shed tears, “Stop! Stop now!” I knew what I was doing, and I knew it was wrong to do that to myself as a person.

He stopped as we pulled away from each other. I kept crying because I knew he didn’t love me. I want to have sex with a guy who loves me, and after I’m married.

But suddenly, he covered my body with the sheets and held me close to his chest. I was still red because I heard his heartbeat, which was going so fast. He kissed my forehead, “You know after this you belong to me, right?”

I lifted my head up once he let go, “I am not an object, so I don’t belong to anyone.”

“That’s fine because I know I love you, and you are my love.”

“No, way.”

Then he gave me a passionate kiss on the lips, which was so hot and soft. Then he pulled away and said, “Now I know how to shut you up.”

As he stood up with his boxers on I said, “I’m……”

But he cut me off by approaching me, “Be prepared, I will make you mine. Look forward to it.” Then he left.

I threw a pillow at the attached door, I became as red as an apple, “I won’t be looking forward to anything.”

What am I going to do? Because I felt lonely, and I almost gave into my sexual desires, and I almost had sex with my police partner! This is a disaster.

The next day after some rest things seemed normal. I saw Ednus in the dining room, and as we left he didn’t make a move. So I smiled and asked him, “So where are we going today?”

“We are going to the shores of the city since that seems to be where the most activity is conducted.” He said focusing.

“Okay, then let’s go.” I said as I took his hand, and we went in the taxi.

He just smiled.

As we got to the coast it was filled with ships, for it was a harbor. There were ships of all colors, white, blue, silver, brown, red, even combinations. We got off at the beginning of the docks.

As we looked around while walking I asked, “So what are we looking for?”

“Oh, the usual. Anything that looks suspicious.”

“Oh, you mean like that?” I asked as I motioned towards a man early twenties, black hair, tall, carrying a wool sack, but what he pulled out of the sack grabbed our attention. It was a light shaded green bulb that fit in his hand, the tips were white and feathery, but by the touch it would be smooth.

Ednus and I hid behind a wall near one of the cart stands that was three feet away from the man.

“That is an opium bud.” Ednus whispered to me.

“Oh, so that’s what they look like. I just pointed that guy out because he was hiding the object while showing it to the shop owner.”

“Looks like you do have good instincts.”

“Thanks.” I said as we continued to observe the young man.

The young man started to look around as if something was wrong. He told the shopkeeper something. Then he continued to look around.

“I think he knows we’re here.” I said.

“He’s just nervous because he knows if he gets caught, he can go to jail.”

“So what do we do now, continue to observe him?”

“Yeah, we wait until he makes his move, and then we follow him.”

“Great idea, hopefully he will lead us to the opium smugglers.”

“That’s just hopeful thinking.”

“What?” I said frustrated.

“At least he might lead us to someone who has dealings with them.”

“Oh.” I felt so useless right now. Ednus and the other detectives know everything, and I am just asking questions and following their lead. What can I do to change all this?

After fifteen minutes, the guy gave the shopkeeper the bag of opium buds, and the young man took five gold coins. Then the young man left towards the inland.

“Are those pure gold coins that he has?” I asked as we slowly followed him.

“Yes, and only in certain countries a citizen is allowed to exchange gold for merchandise. Here is not one of them.”

“Then he is breaking the law.”

As we continued to tail the young man, we found that he got into a white mini beetle and drove in the direction of the countryside.

“He’s getting away.” I complained, and then I tried to call a taxi, and none of them stopped.

Ednus said, “Let me try.” Then he said something in Italian, which stopped a gold and white taxi.

“Get in.” he said as he opened the door on his side. We both got in, and I asked, “How did you do that?”

“I can speak Italian remember?”

“Oh, sure.”

Then he said something in Italian to the driver, and we took off.

“He is going to head after our suspect, and once he stops we will tail our suspect on foot again.”

“I’ll pay the driver.”

I could only answer in short sentences because I didn’t know what I was doing. But once we start tailing the suspect on foot, I’ll show everyone what I’m made of.
