Chapter 30

Mrs. Scrushy took off her ring and put it back in her jewelry box. Still sobbing over the loss of Luke and her unicorn, she ripped up her marriage license.

“How may I help you?” The voice on the other end of the line said.

“Finally,” Mrs. Scrushy said, “My husband died and I was calling to change my name back to my maiden name.

“And what is your original name?”

“Nelson. Elizabeth Nelson.”

When Carter returned to the station, he was immediately struck by a stench. The remains of Settfour were being cleaned up and it was a crime scene. He decided to go to the library to research instead. He went to the computer terminal and Googled© Fred Nelson. He immediately found exactly what he was looking for, because the internet is never wrong. He married a Joan Finkelstein in December 1977. They were married for 34 years, the 34th of which they had their first and only child, Calvin. This ruined the marriage, as kids are wont to do, and they were immediately divorced. Since she hated children she let Fred take it. She then traveled to the Caribbean for 4 years, recently returning to live in Newark. He also found that Fred had a sister, Elizabeth Scrushy, the same woman whose husband just died. This was an aha moment for Carter, who jumped out of his seat and shouted, “Eureka!”

He drove to the Scrushy house and he walked up to the door and rang the doorbell. “Is there an Elizabeth Scrushy here?” he asked as she opened the door.

“No,” she replied.

“Oh, OK sorry to bother you. Goodbye.” He turned around to leave when it hit him. This was an aha moment for Carter who exclaimed, “Eureka!” He turned around, and rang the doorbell and asked for an Elizabeth Nelson.

“Why yes, that’s me!” Elizabeth said excitedly. “Come on in, ask me anything!”

“OK! Did you kill your brother Fred?!”

The mood suddenly turned somber. “Freddie’s dead? Oh my BROTHER! IS DEAD! WHY DIDN’T YOU TELL ME?”

“Oh jeez, I thought you knew. So sorry.”

“You asked if I killed him. Uggh…the nerve! Listen. I know who did it. Let me tell you all about it on the way to the station.”

“Oh Goody!” Carter exclaimed, wondering how such an insane woman could be so smokingly hot.
