Chapter 2: In the Begining
Barely a minute past seven, the clock-radio’s alarm nudged me awake to NPR’s morning news program. My hand hovered over the snooze button, poised to silence this rude interruption to a fitful sleep. Before I could push it, a disembodied voice reported that the UN peacekeeping mission in Cambodia, Southeast Asia, would be recruiting UN volunteers to run its election. The same hairs that warned me of danger stood up along my hairline. In that moment, fully awake and eyes wide open, I knew that I was going to Cambodia.
